EU membership could bring security, stability and opportunity, Swinney says
John Swinney has highlighted the 'security, stability and opportunity' Scotland could have if it was in the European Union (EU).
Speaking before meeting Pedro Serrano, the EU ambassador to the UK, the Scottish First Minister stressed this could be crucial amid the current 'uncertain' political environment.
The SNP leader said the recent deal between the UK Government and the EU was 'long overdue progress' towards rebuilding relationships post-Brexit, but insisted that it was no substitute for membership of the trading bloc.
Wednesday's meeting with the EU ambassador will also involve Slovenian ambassador Sanja Stiglic and Bulgarian ambassador Tihomir Stoytchev.
In addition the First Minister will also meet the minister-president of Flanders at an event to mark 25 years of Flemish trade and investment in Scotland.
Mr Swinney made clear he regards both visits as being opportunities to build Scotland's relationship with the EU.
The First Minister stressed that 'the European Union is one of our most important economic and security partners'.
Speaking about the deal the UK Government agreed in May, he said that this 'represents long-overdue progress in rebuilding our relationship' but added that 'no agreement can deliver the economic, social and security benefits we lost with Brexit in 2020'.
Mr Swinney stated: 'That is why I firmly believe Scotland's best future lies as an independent country within the EU.
'More than ever, the current uncertain economic and geopolitical environment reinforces the importance of Scotland having the security, stability and opportunity that comes with EU membership.
'In the meantime we will continue to engage with nations and regions across Europe to maximise opportunities through trade, investment, innovation and academia.
'As we enter the next phase of negotiations, we stand ready to be closely involved as the UK Government develops its future priorities for working with the EU.'

China eyes stronger cooperation with ECB amid global trade tensions
BEIJING, June 12 (Reuters) - China is ready to strengthen cooperation with the European Central Bank (ECB), including on reforming the international monetary system, Premier Li Qiang told ECB President Christine Lagarde at a meeting in Beijing on Thursday. Lagarde is on a rare visit to Beijing this week as both China and the European Union are embroiled in trade tensions with the United States, following President Donald Trump's imposition of sweeping tariffs on most nations. China and the EU should promote open cooperation and maintain multilateral coordination, Li said, adding that Beijing was willing to enhance market connectivity and industrial synergy with the bloc. Lagarde also met China's central bank governor Pan Gongsheng on Wednesday. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation, and agreed to establish an annual meeting mechanism between the governors of the two central banks, according to a statement from the People's Bank of China. Following his return to the White House in January, Trump's decision to impose tariffs has shifted the contours of global trade and poses challenges for the global economy. Chinese exports to the 27-nation EU rose 12.0% year-on-year in May, while sales to the United States dropped by 34.5%. China's exports to Germany and France, the bloc's largest economies, grew by more than 20%, while China's imports from the EU were flat. Lagarde's visit came as China and the EU seek to ease friction in their trade ties, with Beijing delaying a verdict earlier this week on a high-profile investigation into imported pork from the EU. The two sides have also been closing in on a deal to resolve disputes over EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. Beijing has already extended its anti-dumping investigation into EU brandy and offered to speed up rare earth magnet export licences for European firms.

Nursing home documentary should be investigated by gardai
He also said the state is too reliant on private nursing home care and 'far too many' people in Ireland go into nursing homes 'far too early'. Labour TD Marie Sherlock said during Leaders' Questions that there are 'huge questions for Government' over how to care for older people in Ireland. She said there are no minimum staffing levels for nursing homes, despite there being such standards in Northern Ireland and elsewhere. 'Are you comfortable that the nursing home sector is becoming dominated by big business in Ireland?' she asked. Responding, Mr Harris said: 'The short answer is I believe the state is too reliant on the private market when it comes to nursing home provision. 'That's why we established a commission of care because I do think we need to look at the entire model of how we care for older people in this country.' He also told the Dail: 'I've been reflecting on this, and I fully accept that people work in very demanding environments, I fully accept that as well. 'But I do also believe what stems from what we've seen on our television screens in recent days are real questions of personal accountability. 'There are laws in our land today. There are laws in relation to assault, there are laws in relation to how we conduct ourselves, and I would urge that a referral is made to An Garda Siochana in relation to the footage that we saw. 'Because what I saw with my own two eyes, the haunting scenes of people being, in my view, physically assaulted in their home, is something that – the Government has responsibilities here to do things, absolutely, but so too do people who carry out those actions. 'I do think there's a need for a Garda investigation into what we saw in relation to the individual actions of people in relation to that.' He also said Hiqa has questions to answer as there were 'serious shortcomings'. He added: 'There are many good private nursing homes, big and small, right across the country and I don't have an ideological view in relation that. 'I just want older people to have choice in relation to their care. I want their families to be supported in making those decisions. 'I want to know, whether it's a public nursing home or a private nursing home, that everyone is safe, that everyone is being treated with dignity. 'I do think we should also be more ambitious about care in the community. I do believe that. I believe far too many people in Ireland go into a nursing home far too early. I can think of good examples of where we have housing alternatives in place and home care opportunities, but they're far too rare. 'But I also think there are genuine, serious issues of personal accountability. 'There is no law, there is no ideology, or there is no model of care that can excuse away – either in its existence or its absence – the conduct of people who decided to physically manhandle elderly people with dementia, and I want them held accountable and I want the gardai to look at the matter.'

New bus service from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Heathrow announced
