Google partners with Youngkin and offers AI training courses to Virginia job seekers
The partnership, which he has described as an AI career launchpad, will provide Google-sponsored AI training courses for up to 10,000 Virginians at any given time, officials said at Google's office in the northern part of the state.
The training opportunities will be listed on a job website that Youngkin launched earlier this year, in response to significant layoffs among federal workers by the Trump administration, including many workers from Virginia.
'All fields, all career movements somewhere along the way, are going to incorporate this next generation of technology,' Youngkin said at the news conference.
The initiative comes with unemployment rising in Virginia, which has roughly 20,400 continued unemployment claims, state Secretary of Labor George' Bryan' Slater said after the news conference. Roughly 2,800 people initially filed unemployment claims during the first week of July, which is about 6.1 percent higher than the previous week.
The AI webpage will feature the free courses as well as some low-cost learning opportunities, ranging 'from beginner friendly courses on AI fundamentals and practical workplace applications of artificial intelligence to bootcamps and degree programs offered by Virginia's leading-edge community colleges and universities,' according to the governor's office.
Nicole Overley, commissioner of Virginia Works, said businesses have told her office that AI proficiency has become increasingly necessary in their industries. She said the training would help Virginians become competitive in the job markets where these very businesses are hiring.
Overly confirmed that the training courses won't cost taxpayers anything and are being donated by Google. Bronagh Friel, head of partnerships at Google, said she was proud of the collaboration with the state.
'Google is committed to championing economic growth and opportunity in Virginia,' she said.

MAGA darling Alina Habba makes major admission about her future in Trump's inner circle
Alina Habba gathered her staff on Thursday in a bittersweet meeting she hopes won't be her last as the acting U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey. A panel of district court judges will hold a meeting with Habba on Monday and vote on whether she can remain in her role. In the lead up to that fateful vote, Habba held an all-hands meeting to thank staff for their work, a person familiar with the meeting told the Daily Mail. They admitted that Habba acknowledged she might no longer hold the acting attorney position for the District of New Jersey beyond next week. She wanted to speak with staff before she potentially gets the boot from her temporary gig while she's snaking her way through the Senate confirmation process to be Trump's permanent head. The majority of judges who'll vote on whether to keep Habba around after her 120-day temporary gig runs out are all Democrats. But a source close to Habba told the Daily Mail that she has been meeting with the judges for weeks to develop relationships and discuss a path forward should she get the permanent confirmation to the role. Still, the former counselor to the president isn't sure how they will vote next week. The person close to Habba said she 'would never back down' from the job Trump chose for her. Habba told her staff, 'Hopefully this isn't goodbye,' according to the person familiar with the meeting. They said that Habba was making sure she was able to thank them for their work if she doesn't get a chance to do so later. The judicial meeting on Monday will present the possibility of a choice between two potential candidates – First Assistant U.S. Attorney Desiree Grace and former U.S. District Court Judge Noel Lawrence Hillman. Both are registered Republicans. The judges, however, could instead choose to appoint Habba to the role in which she currently serves as acting attorney. If the judges take no action, Grace would become the next acting U.S. attorney. Additionally, the Senate could intervene and confirm President Donald Trump's permanent nominee for the position, which is Habba. The president nominated Habba for a full term as U.S. Attorney on July 1. But New Jersey's two Democratic Senators, Cory Booker and Andy Kim, stalled the process when they said they wouldn't sign off on her.

Astronomer launches ‘formal investigation' after married CEO Andy Byron and HR boss caught on Coldplay ‘kiss cam'
Software company Astronomer has launched a formal investigation after its married CEO and head of HR were caught being intimate at a Coldplay concert, engulfing the internet in rumors of an alleged affair between the boss and his underling. 'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability,' the company said in a statement on LinkedIn. 'The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly. Social media went into meltdown after footage showing Andy Byron and his company's Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot, awkwardly jumping out of each other's arms as they flashed up on a 'kiss cam' during the band's show in Boston Wednesday night. Byron, who had his arms wrapped around Cabot's waist from behind, quickly let her go as his HR chief covered her face with her hands, and he crouched down, trying to hide from the camera. 'Oh, they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quipped as the pair ran away from where they were standing. In its statement the company sought to clarify several details about the incident and the aftermath, including that Byron had responded. 'Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect,' the statement read. Byron has been CEO of Astronomer, a New York City-based data orchestration platform that 'empowers data teams to bring mission-critical analytics, Ai, and software to life,' since 2023, according to the company's LinkedIn page. Meanwhile, Cabot joined the team nine months ago, according to her LinkedIn.

Crypto sector breaches $4 trillion in market value during pivotal week
July 18 (Reuters) - The crypto sector's market value hit $4 trillion on Friday, according to CoinGecko, marking a milestone that reflects its shift from a nascent asset class to a central part of the global investment landscape. A wave of renewed optimism, regulatory clarity in key markets and rising institutional flows have catapulted the crypto sector to a new valuation peak. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday to create a regulatory framework for U.S.-dollar-pegged cryptocurrency tokens, known as stablecoins, sending the bill to President Donald Trump, who is expected to sign it into law. "The arrival of the Trump legislation signaled an about-turn in attitudes towards the crypto industry, but legislators are still exercising some caution," said Derren Nathan, head of equity research, Hargreaves Lansdown. House lawmakers also passed two other crypto bills, sending them next to the Senate for consideration. One lays out a regulatory framework for crypto, while the other seeks to ban the U.S. from issuing a central bank digital currency. The $4 trillion milestone underscores how far the crypto industry has come from its speculative, fringe origins. With growing interest from asset managers, new exchange-traded products and broader adoption among retail and corporate users, digital assets are increasingly shaping conversations in global finance. Stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, usually a 1:1 dollar peg, are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens. Their use has grown rapidly in recent years, and proponents say they could be used to send payments instantly. "The Genius Act will go down in history as a law that served as a foundational step in mainstreaming of crypto as an asset class," said Chris Perkins, president, CoinFund. Corporate treasury allocations to bitcoin are also gaining pace, with a growing number of public companies adding the token to their balance sheets as a long-term store of value. The sector was last trading at a combined market value of $3.92 trillion, as bitcoin — the world's largest cryptocurrency — fell 1.8%. Bitcoin crossed the $120,000 mark earlier this week, setting a record. Brokerage Bernstein forecast it could climb to $200,000 by end-2025. Ether, the second-biggest crypto token, was last up 4.5%. It has more than doubled over the past three months. The crypto rally also powered gains in linked equities, with Coinbase (COIN.O), opens new tab and Robinhood (HOOD.O), opens new tab climbing to all-time highs on Friday. Shares of the crypto exchange were last up 1%, while the retail trading platform, which also supports crypto trades, gained 3%. Ether-focused stocks also saw broad gains.
