Berlin says it is prepared to increase pressure on Israel over Gaza
'The chancellor was very clear in the phone conversation with the Israeli prime minister ... that the federal government is prepared to increase the pressure if progress is not made,' a spokesperson said.
'In principle we are prepared to take further steps, which is also the purpose of this afternoon's security meeting,' he said, referring to a meeting of the German security cabinet.

Kurdish-led SDF say five members killed during attack by Daesh in Syria
CAIRO: The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said on Sunday that five of its members had been killed during an attack by Daesh militants on a checkpoint in eastern Syria's Deir el-Zor on July 31. The Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement on Monday. The SDF was the main fighting force allied to the United States in Syria during fighting that defeated Daesh in 2019 after the group declared a caliphate across swathes of Syria and Iraq. The Daesh has been trying to stage a comeback in the Middle East, the West and Asia. Deir el-Zor city was captured by Daesh in 2014, but the Syrian army retook it in 2017.

Italian judges dismiss case against Meloni over release of Libyan suspect
ROME: An Italian judicial body has dropped a case against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who had been placed under investigation following the release of a Libyan police officer wanted by the International Criminal Court, she said on Monday. Osama Elmasry Njeem was freed in January and flown home in an Italian state aircraft just days after being detained in the northern city of Turin under an ICC arrest warrant for alleged crimes against humanity, including murder, torture and rape. 'The judges dismissed the case only against me,' Meloni said in a post on social media X. She was under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting a crime and misuse of public funds. Meloni added that based on the document she received, magistrates will pursue the case against Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio and Cabinet Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano, who had been placed under investigation with her. 'I maintain that this government acts cohesively under my leadership: every decision, especially one so important, is agreed upon. It is therefore absurd to request that Piantedosi, Nordio and Mantovano stand trial, but not myself, before them,' Meloni wrote on X. The ICC has been investigating allegations of serious crimes committed in Libya since the country's 2011 civil war following a referral by the UN Security Council. Justice Minister Nordio told parliament in February that Italy had no choice but to free Elmasry due to mistakes and inaccuracies in the arrest warrant.

Israeli government votes to dismiss attorney general, escalating standoff with judiciary
JERUSALEM: The Israeli Cabinet on Monday voted unanimously to fire the attorney general, escalating a long-running standoff between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the judiciary that critics see as a threat to the country's democratic institutions. The Supreme Court froze the move while it considers the legality. Netanyahu and his supporters accuse Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara of exceeding her powers by blocking decisions by the elected government, including a move to fire the head of Israel's domestic security agency, another ostensibly apolitical office. She has said there is a conflict of interest because Netanyahu and several former aides face a series of criminal investigations. Critics accuse Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, of undermining judicial independence and seeking to concentrate power in the hands of his coalition government, the most nationalist and religious in Israel's history. Netanyahu denies the allegations and says he is the victim of a witch hunt by hostile judicial officials egged on by the media. The Movement for Quality Government in Israel, a prominent watchdog group, said it filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court following Monday's vote. It said more than 15,000 citizens have joined the petition, calling the dismissal 'illegal' and 'unprecedented.' In a statement, the group accused the government of changing dismissal procedures only after failing to legally remove Baharav-Miara under the existing rules. It also cited a conflict of interest related to Netanyahu's ongoing trial. 'This decision turns the role of the attorney general into a political appointment,' the group said. 'The legal battle will continue until this flawed decision is overturned.'
