Spain reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 on Monday after the world champions' hammered Belgium 6-2 while Italy were held to a 1-1 draw with Portugal.
A brace from the magnificent Alexia Putellas and further goals from Irene Paredes, Esther Gonzalez, Mariona Caldentey and Claudia Pina gave Group B leaders Spain a second thumping win.

Montse Tome's team will win the group if they avoid defeat to Italy, who are two points behind La Roja in second after being denied qualification late on by third-placed Portugal, on Friday.
Few would bet on Spain failing to secure first place after two blistering performances in which they have netted 11 times.
"We knew they would try to sit back and hold us off at the beginning, we could have been better, sure, but you need to adapt during the game. We managed to do that and create good opportunities," Tome told reporters.
"We have to improve but we did what we planned to do."

Belgium, who twice levelled through Justine Vanhaevermaet and Hannah Eurlings, are close to going home after eventually being blown away by relentless waves of attacking football.
They acquitted themselves well until Caldentey forced home Spain's fourth in the 61st minute, defending with grit and causing problems with some punchy breakaway football.
"It was difficult because I really believed in what we were doing and I loved seeing my players give everything they had," said Belgium coach Elisabet Gunnarsdottir.
"I really think we gave them a game for at least 60 minutes, a really good game... I'm proud of them."

When Putellas finished off a beautiful spell of quick passing in the 22nd minute it looked like the beginning of a thumping win similar to the 5-0 destruction of Portugal in the opening round.

Yet seconds later Vanhaevermaet levelled with the simplest of goals, nodding home Tessa Wullaert's corner.
Paredes put Spain back in the lead six minutes before the break with a bullet header from Pina's deep corner. Again Belgium hit back, this time through Eurlings who sprung the offside trap before rifling home in the 50th minute.
Gonzalez netted her third goal of the tournament two minutes later after collecting Putellas' neat through ball. The game was up when Caldentey bundled home from a corner just after the hour.

Pina smashed in her first goal of the tournament with 10 minutes remaining, and appropriately it was Putellas' deft flick which completed the rout shortly afterwards.
On this form Spain look a class above the rest of the tournament and clear favourites to win the country's first ever women's European crown.
Italy thought they were joining Spain in the quarters when Cristiana Girelli opened the scoring in Geneva with a brilliant curling effort with 20 minutes remaining.
The Azzurre were saved 10 minutes later when Diana Silva was denied a leveller when she was ruled offside by VAR following her rebound finish from a corner.

But in the 89th minute Diana Gomes lobbed home a leveller which gave Portugal a point and kept them in the competition moments after Carole Costa headed onto the crossbar.
That goal could be huge as Portugal face Belgium while Italy take on Spain.
Italy currently have a goal difference which is six better than Portugal but with Spain up next a big swing is not that to imagine.

Bantams Community Foundation gets grant for mentoring scheme

Bradford City FC Community Foundation has secured funding to launch a new support programme. The foundation has been awarded a £100,000 grant from the SkyBet EFL Building Foundations Fund to deliver "The Way Forward," a football-based mentoring scheme for young men aged 18 to 24 in Bradford. The project is aimed at those in some of the city's most deprived areas, who are facing high unemployment, poor mental health, and limited opportunities. The programme will use sport, coaching, and life skills training to build confidence, resilience, and pathways into education or employment. Bradford City FC Community Foundation was inspired by Gareth Southgate's response to the Centre for Social Justice's "Lost Boys" report in March 2025. Ian Ormondroyd, chief executive officer of the Foundation and a former Bantams player, said: "Growing up in Bradford, I experienced first-hand the power football naturally has in changing the trajectory of young men's lives. "Our commitment to this city is to support everyone, from all backgrounds, and that includes young men who are struggling with finding their place in society. "This grant allows us to support them in their futures, and have a say in ensuring they are viewed as positive, contributing members of our society. "I'd like to thank SkyBet and the EFL for providing us with these vital funds, so we can continue to make a difference in Bradford." Pavan Sembi, the Foundation's project lead for the programme, said: "Following extensive research in our community, a large number of young men expressed feelings of being forgotten in their communities. "That made our task simple – we need to empower young men to take control of improving their circumstances, and empower them to be supportive, contributing members of their communities. "'A loss of identity for men and boys in deprived areas is something we have seen and heard consistently throughout our work. "The Way Forward is our chance to engage them in positive activities, imbue them with the skills they need to grow and develop as people and professionals, and create a lasting legacy they can carry forward into adulthood." The Building Foundations Fund, now in its second year, is a sponsor-backed fund dedicated solely to community activity. It offers 72 EFL clubs the chance to bid for grants of up to £100,000 to invest in ongoing programmes or to develop new initiatives. The other clubs awarded funding in this round were Colchester United, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Shrewsbury Town, and Walsall.

Liverpool consult Jota's wife and confirm retirement of his number 20 shirt

Liverpool will retire Diogo Jota's No. 20 shirt across all teams, including LFC Women and the Academy, following his tragic death in a car crash alongside his brother Andre Silva. The club called it a 'unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person,' with CEO Michael Edwards confirming it is the first squad number retirement in Liverpool's history. Liverpool will honour Jota ahead of Sunday's friendly against Preston with a minute's silence, digital tributes, black armbands, and a pre-match rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone. Liverpool are to retire Diogo Jota's number 20 shirt in honour of the Portugal forward who was killed with his brother Andre Silva in a car crash this month. "After consultation with his wife, Rute, and family, the club can announce the squad number will be retired in honour and memory of Diogo across all levels, including LFC Women and Academy," the club announced on Friday. "I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club's history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual," the club's chief executive Michael Edwards noted. "Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person," he added. Liverpool return to action for the first time since the July 3 tragedy at English Championship side Preston in a pre-season friendly on Sunday. A rendition of Liverpool's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" will be played prior to the 1400 GMT kick-off and Preston will lay a wreath in front of the away supporters. A minute's silence will then be observed, digital tributes displayed on the stadium big screen and on pitchside advertising boards and players from both teams will wear black armbands. Father of three Jota, who married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso 11 days before the accident, died alongside his brother after a Lamborghini they were travelling in came off the road and burst into flames in northern Spain. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and a number of first-team players, led by captain Virgil van Dijk, attended Jota's funeral last Saturday.

'Work your arse off': age-old advice for Saints

Almost four decades later the advice keeps ageing well for St Kilda coach Ross Lyon. He was a hard-nosed utility at Fitzroy in 1986 under legendary coach David Parkin, dealing with injury in his second season. As the 15th-placed Saints take a four-game losing streak into Sunday's Marvel Stadium game against Sydney, Lyon says nothing has changed about the attitude needed to lift themselves out of the bottom four. "David Parkin, when I was a young kid in 1986 ... as an AFL player, every day, you get up, you've got to work your arse off to get better," Lyon said this week. "The game is giving us feedback. Three-and-a-half quarters or poor execution doesn't get it done. "It has to be great spirit and great execution." The Saints pushed Hawthorn last weekend and also had their moments in previous losses to Fremantle and Collingwood. The only disaster in this losing streak was the round-15 shocker against the Western Bulldogs. But a lack of polish is costing them dearly. "I thought we were fantastic - contested ball, pressure, all the metrics indicated we probably should have been able to win ... bar our execution," Lyon said of the Hawthorn loss. "We just made some errors behind the ball, we coughed up some simple goals and left a lot on the table. "I'm strongly of the view we played with great spirit. We don't need to rectify anything. I'd like to perpetuate it, but as we know, you're only as good as your next moment. "There were some really good signs from us, without being perfect, obviously." The Saints have made three changes, giving 204cm ruckman Max "Moose" Heath his AFL debut, while recalling Liam Stocker and Hugh Boxshall. Meanwhile, if anyone is to bridge the gulf between the top nine and bottom nine on the ladder with seven rounds left, it will be Sydney. But the Swans have their work cut out and must win on Sunday, which looms as a danger game. They are 10th, three games plus a sizeable chunk of percentage behind eighth spot. Injuries aren't helping with Tom Papley and Joel Amartey significant casualties this week. Riley Bice and Aarong Francis will take their places. Unless Sydney make the finals, this will be their last game in Melbourne for the year.
