Gunshots fired into Surrey banquet hall, police investigating
Shots were fired at Surrey's Royal King Palace banquet hall Monday. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said at around 1 a.m. on Monday a staff member discovered damage to the outside of the business. Police were called at 11 a.m., where it was determined the damage was caused by gun shots. 'There were no reports of any injuries related to the property or surrounding properties,' Houghton said. 'It is unknown if the business damaged was the intended target or when the shots were fired. This investigation in its early stages and connections to other incidents and potential motives are being explored.' Last month, some South Asian business owners called on the SPS to provide more help dealing with extortion threats. At that time, police said they had received at least 10 reports of extortion threats targeting South Asian businesses and individuals and that the problem was not limited to Surrey. On June 14, Surrey business Satish Accounting Services was shot at, four days after shots were fired at Hub Insurance. On June 7 shots were fired into the windows of Reflections Banquet Hall in Surrey. It is not known whether the July 21 shooting is related to an extortion attempt. Modesto police search for suspect after bank robbery in downtown
A search is underway for a suspect after a bank robbery and an attempted bank robbery in Modesto on Monday, police said. The bank robbery happened at Oak Valley Bank on I Street around 3 p.m. Police said a man walked in and handed the teller a note that said he had a bomb, but nothing was seen. The teller handed over money and the suspect took off. Police said the same suspect went to the BMO Bank on H Street and did the same thing, but was unable to take off with any cash. The suspect remains outstanding and police said there is no threat to the community. It's unknown how much money the suspect got off with.

Man accused of setting fire to 11 NYPD vehicles is arrested and charged with arson
NEW YORK (AP) — A man with a history of arrests at pro-Palestinian protests was charged Monday with setting fire to 11 New York City police vehicles last month. Jakhi McCray, 21, of Brooklyn pleaded not guilty to arson in U.S. District Court. A criminal complaint unsealed Monday said McCray was recorded on surveillance video scaling a fence to a private lot for reserve New York Police Department vehicles in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood shortly before 1 a.m. on June 12. A police officer arrived about a half hour later to find the vehicles on fire and the suspect fleeing through a hole in the fence, it said. The complaint said a lighter and a pair of sunglasses containing McCray's fingerprints were found at the scene, along with fire starters that had been placed under some undamaged vehicles. Police estimated the replacement cost of the vehicles at $800,000. McCray's attorney, Ron Kuby, said his client, whom he described as an activist, was ordered released on the arson charge but remained in police custody on a separate misdemeanor count in Manhattan. After vehicles were torced, Mayor Eric Adams suggested the suspect was connected to protests in Los Angeles, New York and elsewhere over the Trump administration's immigration enforcement agenda. 'Setting police vehicles ablaze is not a form of protest — it is a federal crime,' Joseph Nocella Jr., U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a news release Monday.
