Miles Russell averts a free-fall, birdies the last to win second-round U.S. Amateur match
But it only means that he faces another seasoned college player in the round of 16.
Russell, the 16-year-old from Jacksonville Beach, birdied the 18th hole of the Olympic Club Lake Course to beat Auburn sophomore Billy Davis 1-up in the second round of U.S. Amateur match play.
Russell was three-up with four holes to play, but Davis, Russell's Junior Ryder Cup teammate in 2023 and a member of the All-SEC Freshman team in 2024, battled back to win Nos. 15 and 16 with birdies, then the par-5 17th hole with a par.
But Russell rose to the adversity by draining a 15-footer for birdie and moved on.

Russell teed off in the round of 16 at 6 p.m. on Aug. 14 against Mahanth Chirravuri of Chandler, Ariz., a senior at Pepperdine who won the West Coast Conference tournament individual title last year and posted the fourth-highest stroke average in team history.
U.S. Amateur live scoring
Chirravuri tied for ninth in the NCAA Championship and was a member of the All-NCAA team.
Chirravuri topped Oklahoma senior Jase Summy 3 and 2 in his second-round match. Summy was second team All-SEC and second team Ping All-American.

"I had to give Jannik something, it's his birthday," he said. "I had brought some from France. I'm a collector - it was the perfect gift." Atmane then put up a poised fight in the opening set before Sinner pulled away in the second for victory. "He was just better than me," Atmane said. "He took all the responsibility in the second set and he was able to play his game. "If it's the world number one then its over already. WASHINGTON (AP) — Cade Cavalli earned his first major league victory, James Wood hit a two-run double, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Saturday. Cavalli struck out five and scattered seven hits over seven innings for Washington. The last-place Nationals have won three of four. Trea Turner had three hits for NL East-leading Philadelphia, which was shut out for the eighth time this season and lost for the fourth time in five games. Cavalli (1-0) was Washington's first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft and debuted in August 2022. He made only one start with the Nationals because of a shoulder injury, and didn't make it back to the majors until Aug. 6, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. In his third start with Washington this season, Cavalli allowed only one runner to reach third. The 27-year-old right-hander retired the final eight batters he faced and needed only 90 pitches for the longest outing of his career.
