An off-duty female Saps member was shot and killed in Mangethe, near Mandeni, this morning.
The shooting happened as part of a suspected murder-suicide attempt, given a man was found shot and critically injured nearby.
The man was airlifted by an Air Mercy Services helicopter to a specialist hospital after being stabilised by attending paramedics.
Police will investigate the shooting.

Image: X Fezile Ngubane, the KwaZulu Natal man who was arrested and later released for the gruesome murder of Olorato Mongale insists he has never laid his hand on a woman. IOL previously reported that Ngubane was handed over to authorities by his father at the KwaMashu police station after learning that his son was sought in connection with the murder case. According to police, a multidisciplinary investigation team, headed by Major General Mbuso Khumalo, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in Gauteng, conducted thorough interviews and preliminary investigations that ultimately absolved Ngubane. He has been deemed a victim, having been unwittingly drawn into a sinister scheme, and has since been released from police custody. Ngubane, who is a father to a teenage girl and ekes a living by washing cars, was wrongly implicated in the horrific murder of Mongale, after a suspect in the murder, Philangenkosi Makhanya, allegedly used Ngubane's identity to register multiple SIM cards. Makhanya allegedly used the SIM cards registered in Ngubane's name communicate with various women. Speaking to journalists, a shaken Ngubane said despite struggling with drug addiction, he is not a violent person. "I would like South Africans to know that I have never been involved in crime, i have never been a person who is a fan of crime, I do not entertain crime. It is just that the addiction, the life that I have put myself in, is the one that is really hurting me. For these three days, as I was in the holding cells, I was shaking for my life, I saw that maybe this is my last opportunity in life to turn back, to do good," he said. Video Player is loading. Ngubane said from the time he was arrested, and went on to spend days in police holding cells, his neighbours have been vouching for him, because they know he is not a violent person. Ngubane said he would be happy to receive help to quit his reliance on intoxicating substances. "I would kindly be glad if help was offered," he told reporters. On Sunday, IOL reported that Deputy Police Minister Dr Polly Boshielo has called for society to help the authorities combat gender-based violence at Mongale's funeral in Bloemfontein. Boshielo extended her condolences to Mongale's family, particularly her mother, Poppy Mongale. "We may not have been able to prevent the death of your child, but one of her perpetrators is now in permanent custody and will never rise again to terrorise other women," she said. Olorato Mongale was recently found dead after going on a date. Image: X The police's National Anti-Kidnapping Task Team and Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit were activated immediately after the case was reported last Sunday. "Ladies and gentlemen, it was important that we get to these criminals first before they do, what they did to Olorato, to another woman. "To Poppy and the family, may you find solace in knowing that because of Olorato's spirit, Philangenkosi Makhanya will no longer terrorise women in South Africa." Boshielo emphasised that at least 20 cases are being linked to the suspects, with incidents reported in Bloemfontein, Nelspruit, Midrand, Pretoria, Potchefstroom, Lebowakgomo, and Johannesburg. Victims were lured under the guise of romantic interest, only to be robbed and, in some cases, kidnapped. She also reiterated that Ngubane, previously thought to be a suspect, has been cleared following evidence that he was a victim of identity theft. IOL News

Silent protest at Parktown High School for Girls targets GBV+F crisis
In the continuous fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBV+F), on May 26, Parktown High School for Girls organised a silent protest at the school. Learner and organiser of the initiative Ayanda Mehlomakhulu said she decided to be part of the initiative because she wanted to take a stand against the heinous crime. 'I decided to involve the school in taking a stand and having a moment of silence because GBV+F is a crime that is constantly on the rise, and nothing seems to be done about it.' 'Being a young woman in 2025 is about using your voice to speak up about issues that are important to our generation. 'This includes the revival of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on GBV+F, tasked with co-ordinating government interventions, resolving systemic bottlenecks, and ensuring measurable progress. Investigation reveals corruption allegations against local politician linked to N3 highway upgrade in Msunduzi Municipality Image: Facebook An exclusive investigation by IOL has uncovered disturbing allegations of corruption and financial misconduct involving a local politician and his wife, linked to the multi-billion rand N3 highway upgrade - a critical infrastructure project connecting Durban and Pietermaritzburg. The investigation suggests that a Chinese joint venture company, Base Major Joint Venture CSC, may be complicit in illicit dealings that jeopardise the integrity of the project. The Msunduzi segment of the N3 upgrade forms part of a broader initiative to enhance approximately 79.3 kilometres of freeway - a key route facilitating trade and mobility in South Africa. Valued at nearly R29 billion, the project aims to ease chronic congestion, improve safety, and enhance economic integration from Durban to inland regions. It is aligned with the government's Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs), designed to spur economic growth and create jobs. However, behind the scenes, controversy appears to be mounting. Multiple sources have implicated local politician Sibusiso Mkhize, a councillor in the Msunduzi Local Municipality, and his wife, Nkule MaKhuzwayo Mkhize, in a scheme to siphon off funds via illicit payments. According to insiders, Mkhize - appointed by Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla to serve on the Project Liaison Committee (PLC) - allegedly solicited and received bribes from contractors working on the project. Next Stay Close ✕ Financial Flows and Evidence of Misconduct IOL's investigation uncovered financial records indicating that Mkhize received substantial payments, some of which were allegedly channelled into his wife's Absa bank account. Three electronic receipts, reviewed by IOL, reflect transactions of R169,000, R100,000 and R30,000 - all referencing 'G7 Base Major,' presumed to be linked to the joint venture company. Sources allege these payments have continued since the project's inception, with a regular monthly payout of R25,000 purportedly directed to Mkhize's wife. The revelations raise serious concerns around conflicts of interest, abuse of office, and potential kickbacks on a public-funded project. When approached for comment, Councillor Mkhize declined to respond, citing legal advice. His wife, Nkule MaKhuzwayo Mkhize, demanded the identities of IOL's sources, questioned the publication's legitimacy, and invoked privacy rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). She refused to provide further comment despite multiple requests. Absa spokesperson Carli Cooke confirmed that the account belonged to MaKhuzwayo Mkhize, lending credence to the allegations. IOL also contacted municipal authorities. Eunice Majola, speaker of the uMsunduzi Municipality, said the matter would be referred to the Rules and Ethics Committee for investigation. Mayor Thebolla acknowledged the gravity of the allegations, clarifying that Mkhize had been a municipal representative on the PLC but was replaced two months ago. 'These allegations do not reflect well on the municipality,' he said. 'Let's first agree this is a Sanral project. The municipality has no access to operational details. We merely nominate a council member to represent us. I recently nominated someone else to replace Councillor Mkhize.' Sanral, the national roads agency overseeing the project, confirmed it was investigating the matter. 'Sanral takes these claims very seriously. We are reviewing the situation and will communicate our findings once the investigation is complete,' said spokesperson Lwando Mahlasela. The N3 upgrade involves 15 work packages at a projected cost of R29 billion. It aims to create around 33,500 jobs, prioritising local labour, and channel R8.8 billion to black-owned enterprises to foster inclusive growth.
