Terming Bengali as 'Bangladeshi national language' in Delhi Police letter insulting: Mamata Banerjee
Mamta Banerjee on Sunday lashed out at the Delhi Police for referring to the Bengali language as "Bangladeshi national language" in a purported letter, alleging that it was "insulting, anti-national and unconstitutional".
The letter, linked to an investigation of a case under the 'Foreigners' Act', was written to the officer-in-charge of
Banga Bhawan
, the official guest house of the state government in the national capital.

The Trinamool Congress supremo described the Centre as anti-Bengali and urged all to stage protests against such "anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate Bengali-speaking people of India".
"See now how Delhi Police under the direct control of the Ministry of Home, Government of India, is describing Bengali as "Bangladeshi" language!" Banerjee posted on her Facebook account, sharing a copy of the letter.
Banerjee said that Bengali is not only her mother tongue but also the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda.

She also said that Bengali was the language in which both India's national anthem, 'Jana Gana Mana' by Tagore and national song 'Vande Mataram' by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay were written.
"... the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!" Banerjee said.
"Scandalous, insulting, anti-national, unconstitutional!! This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language, which degrades and debases us all. We urge immediate, strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali-speaking people of India," she said.
Earlier in the day, the TMC posted a letter, in its X handle, claiming that the police officer in charge of the investigation has written to the Banga Bhawan in the national capital, seeking a translator for "Bangladeshi national language" following the arrest of eight people, suspected to have illegally crossed over into India from the neighbouring country.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and party's leader in the Lok Sabha Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday (August 7, 2025) slammed the Election Commission (EC), accusing it of acting beyond its jurisdiction. 'They are going overboard. The EC also needs to understand that it is an impartial and unbiased organisation, and it has to operate while remaining within the ambit of the Constitution,' Mr. Banerjee told media persons while leaving for Delhi. The Trinamool Congress leader said the EC's responsibility would begin only when the model code of conduct was in place and the poll body would take over the State's civil and criminal/police administrative machinery in its own hands so that the election was free, fair, and impartial. The remarks by Mr. Banerjee came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she would not let the EC suspend any government officials. On August 5, the EC had sent a letter to the West Bengal Chief Secretary directing suspension of four officials attached to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the State. 'Our officers have been sent notice that they have been suspended. Has election been declared? Under which laws are you sending notice and threatening to suspend and saying that that FIR should be registered. This will not happen. I won't allow punishment to the officers,' the Chief Minister said. She had accused the EC of working at the behest of the BJP. Mr. Banerjee, the Diamond Harbour MP, accused the EC of playing an 'active and shameless role' in denying legitimate voters their democratic rights. 'Now the EC has taken a shameless role to snatch the voting rights of genuine voters,' he alleged. Later in the day, Mr. Banerjee met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The Trinamool leader said his party wanted the House to function. 'We have sought a discussion on the special intensive revision (SIR). Our MPs have been giving adjournment motions for the past 4-5 days. They have demanded discussions, but the Centre is not allowing it. We have told the Speaker that if required, discuss with the Centre and then allow us to debate on the SIR,' he added.

Advt Advt President Donald Trump's administration has frozen $584 million in federal funding for the University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA said on Wednesday after the government reprimanded the university over pro-Palestinian protests. The Trump administration has threatened to cut federal funds for universities over pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel's war in government alleges universities, including UCLA, allowed antisemitism during the protests. Large demonstrations took place at UCLA last year. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the government wrongly equates their criticism of Israel's military assault in Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territories with antisemitism, and their advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for extremism."Currently, a total of approximately $584 million in extra-mural award funding is suspended and at risk," UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in an update on the university of California President James Milliken separately said the institution agreed to have talks with the federal government to restore its funding. Milliken said funding "cuts do nothing to address antisemitism."The White House had no immediate comment. Last week, UCLA agreed to pay over $6 million to settle a lawsuit by some students and a professor who alleged antisemitism. It was also sued this year over a 2024 violent mob attack on pro-Palestinian protesters at the height of the campus protest movement. The government has in recent weeks settled its probes with Columbia University, which agreed to pay over $220 million, and Brown University, which said it will pay $50 million. Both institutions accepted certain government demands. Talks to settle with Harvard University are advocates have raised concerns about academic freedom and free speech. The government has also attempted to deport foreign student protesters but faced judicial roadblocks. Stanford University's student-run newspaper sued the Trump administration on Wednesday, saying student writers censored themselves and turned down assignments related to Gaza to avoid being targeted for deportation. Rights advocates have noted a rise in antisemitism, anti-Arab bias and Islamophobia due to the war. The Trump administration has not announced equivalent probes into Islamophobia. In a major step forward in strengthening 'green partnership' between India and Mauritius and as part of our shared vision for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future, the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Anurag Srivastava officially handed over the first batch of tenelectric buses (E-buses) to the Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam on Wednesday. This event marks a significant milestone in our bilateral partnership and reaffirms the deep-rooted and people-centric partnership between the two countries. This project supports Mauritius's national objective of reducing carbon emissions and contributes to its transition toward cleaner and more efficient public transport.
