July 4 South Africa (Fairview) form analysis

New Paper03-07-2025
Race 1 (2,000m)
A tough opening race.
(2) GLOBAL SCENE is battling to get out of the maiden ranks but was not disgraced last time and could do even better this time around.
(3) BATTLE OF BRITAIN makes her local debut and could improve trying the Polytrack.
(9) CELTIQUE is improving and has a winning chance.
(7) CHEAP THRILLS has improved of late and is another to consider.
Race 2 (1,300m)
(7) ALEX MILLER makes his local debut after a change of trainers. He tries the Polytrack for the first time but does look the one to be with.
(1) AMERICAN MATADOR disappointed last time but was in good form before that and should go very close to winning.
(2) GLOBAL DRUMBEAT is in good form and can contest the finish again.
(3) AMERICAN PITBULL has a place chance on best form.
Race 3 (1,300m)
(2) BEACH QUEEN has run in a better field than this. She returns to a surface on which she has run well and does look the one to beat.
(3) AMANATTO makes her local debut after a change of trainers. She can improve trying the Polytrack.
(5) DANCING IN WINTER and (4) RUBY CLAIRE are both in good form but are struggling to get a first win.
Race 4 (1,200m)
(9) CASINO ACE has only been modest in the Western Cape of late but that form may be good enough in this line-up. He does try the Polytrack for the first time after a change of trainer.
(2) SWISS WALT will be suited by the return to Polytrack and is not out of it.
(6) MUNCHKIN does not win out of turn, but is not without claims in this. Ran a nice second to Beachamwood Boy at his last start.
(5) THUNDER MASTER and (4) JAMBO SANA have both been only modest of late but are capable of winning at this level.
(7) NOTORIX and (8) RAVILIOUS are both carded to have run earlier in the week but could be in the mix of things.
Race 5 (1,200m)
An interesting race.
Trainer Alan Greeff has a strong hand.
(9) BEACHAMWOOD BOY has improved under his care and could be ready to score.
Trainer Gavin Smith has four runners carded, and the best of them could be the improving (6) INDEBE MAYIBUYE.
Beachamwood Boy's stable companion (1) DUBAI HILLS has improved of late and would not be a surprise winner.
Another Greeff runner, (5) MASKED VIGILANTE, has a good record on this track and trip and could also score.
As for Smith's other three runners, (7) DONNY TEE, (10) CHARLIE MALONE and (8) SILVONIAN are all capable of running well on this surface and could earn some money.
Race 6 (1,200m)
An interesting handicap.
Two-year-old filly (1) SILVA CITY has run some good races against her own age. She normally finds a good finish, running past beaten horses, and could be good enough to see off these rivals.
(3) JADE'S CABERNEIGH returns from a break but has won five times on this surface and is capable of winning again if fit.
(7) CAPE CAPRI and (8) BENEATH THE MOON both make their local debuts but are not out of it on the pick of their form.
Race 7 (1,800m)
Greeff can take out this race as well.
(6) FIRST WISH did not get the cleanest of runs last time. She has improved this year and should make a bold bid at scoring over this track and trip.
(3) HONORABLE MEMBER is in very good form and should contest the finish again.
There was not much between First Wish and (2) LOTUS ISLAND when they met on this surface.
(1) GIDEON'S DAUGHTER is not without ability and cannot be underestimated in this lot.
(5) VIHAAN'S QUEEN, (8) CALL TO GLORY and (9) STATE SECRET are three who are capable of getting involved with the finish.
Race 8 (1,400m)
(11) NEMOROSA is improving and could get the run of the race from a good draw. She will have to fight off challenges for both Greeff-trained runners Sharapova and Arabian Red.
(5) ARABIAN RED is clearly a lot better than her last run would suggest and has a very good record on this surface.
(3) SHARAPOVA is full of confidence after some nice wins and will not go down easily.
(2) TREASURE HUNT also likes the Polytrack and could earn some money.

South Africa have planning for next World Cup as top priority

JOHANNESBURG - Top ranked South Africa will be seeking to keep up their winning ways in the Rugby Championship, but the six matches against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina over the next three months will also likely be used for experimentation. Coach Rassie Erasmus has made no secret of his desire to freshen up his ageing squad and keep the Springboks on course for a third successive World Cup title, when the next tournament is hosted in 2027. He has suggested that he might prioritise handing vital international experience to a new crop of emerging players ahead of the outcome of the Rugby Championship tests, although given his relentless competitive streak, this is only likely to be in extreme circumstances. There is guaranteed to be more of the out-of-the-box thinking over the next few months that has turned Erasmus into a figure who deeply divides opinion. Some see his tactical manipulations as innovation, others as borderline cheating, but Erasmus' Machiavellian moves are changing some aspects of rugby. None more so than his loading of the replacement bench with forwards to bring on more muscle at vital junctures of the game. The uneven split between substitute forwards and backs has been quickly adopted by other test teams. More recently, South Africa used the tactic of lifting a jumper, usually reserved for line outs, in open play to force a maul and use their power to push their way over the opponent's goalline and score a try. It garnered both applause and derision but is not stopping Erasmus. 'I think one must be constantly thinking of new plans because if you keep doing the same old stuff, you'll never get any advantage,' Erasmus said ahead of this weekend's kick-off of the southern hemisphere tournament. But priority for the Boks is ensuring a potent squad for the World Cup in two years. The majority of the World Cup winners from 2023 are over 30, and Erasmus is conscious that many might be past their peak in 2027. 'It's not easy to predict who is going to be available, and that's why we've been working with an expanded squad of 45 players,' he explained. Recent tests against Italy and Georgia saw several new caps. 'We won't be throwing the old guys away, but we need to give as many chances as we can to up-and-coming talent,' he added. REUTERS

Taylor Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce namedrops 'scorching hot' Singapore

It has been more than a year since American football star Travis Kelce was in Singapore to attend his girlfriend Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour concerts at the National Stadium in March 2024, but the nation's heat and humidity is still on his mind. In a cover story interview with GQ for the US magazine's September issue, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end praised the American pop superstar for having the endurance and stamina of an athlete. "She may not think of herself as an athlete, but I've seen what she goes through. I've seen the amount of work that she puts on her body, and it's mind-blowing," he said. He shared the tough conditions Swift, 35, had to endure during her global The Eras Tour, comprising 149 sell-out concerts that ran from March 17, 2023, to Dec 8, 2024. Kelce, 35, zeroed in on her six shows in Singapore. Not only did she brave the heat generated by electronic equipment beneath the massive stage floor, but she also had to put up with the punishing weather. "The Eras Tour floor is literally a football field-sized computer. You take that into Singapore, where it is scorching hot, and all of a sudden you're feeling the fumes from the computer and you're feeling the fumes from the sun, and you're doing a show for three hours with a lot of energy, bringing it every single song," he said. "That is arguably more exhausting than how much I put in on a Sunday, and she's doing it three, four, five days in a row." This is not the first time Kelce has commented on Singapore's heat. In the March 13, 2024, episode of Kelce and his brother Jason's New Heights podcast, Kelce gave a glowing review of his visit between March 7 and 9, calling the city-state high-tech and futuristic, exceedingly well-planned-out and more interesting to him than Sydney, Australia, where he also travelled to for The Eras Tour. He also made nods to the diverse cuisine and the 38 deg C temperatures. In the same interview, Kelce gushed about the couple's relationship and how he is the "happiest guy in the world" since they started dating in 2023. He said they could relate to each other, revealing how they have a lot in common, such as entertaining sold-out stadiums. "I hadn't experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions. That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows." He also stressed that their romance is not a publicity stunt. "Whenever I'm with her, it feels like we're just regular people. We're just two people who are in love," Kelce said, adding that their relationship happened very organically. Meanwhile, the celebrity couple look set to break records together in the days to come. A teaser clip from Swift's upcoming highly anticipated guest-starring episode of New Heights, featuring the Grammy-winning singer's surprise reveal of her new 12th studio album The Life Of A Showgirl, was posted on Aug 12. It became her most-viewed Instagram reel ever, garnering more than 130 million views in less than 24 hours. It has since received over 168 million views and 5.1 million "likes". The full podcast episode will be released on Aug 13, marking Swift's debut podcast interview and their inaugural joint interview appearance.

All Blacks compared to Argentina's World Cup winning football team

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox CORDOBA, Argentina - Argentina loose forward Marcos Kremer reckons Saturday's opponents New Zealand are rugby's equivalent of his country's World Cup-winning soccer team. Kremer is due to return to the line-up after a injury layoff when they open this year's Rugby Championship in Cordoba at the weekend against the All Blacks, a team he has long admired. "What I admire about the All Blacks is their culture, their passion for rugby. So, as Argentines, even if you're in better form than them, you'll always respect them because they're the All Blacks. It's like what any football team must go through with Argentina," he told reporters in the build-up to the test at the Estadio Mario Kempes. "It's going to be a great match. We're at home, with our people, in Córdoba, a place where rugby is a thing. "I think right now it's going to come down to the final minutes with a small difference between the teams, depending on how things go and how each team's mindset and mentality work during the week. That's going to be the key." Kremer missed Argentina's June tests against England and Uruguay, having struggled with his knee over the last year. "Playing in this jersey after not having played for two or three months, I don't think there's going to be much change," he said. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. However, injury has ruled out Emilino Boffelli, Thomas Gallo and Benjamin Grondona. "We have to go all out, put those nerves aside, and focus on playing rugby, which we know how to do. We have what it takes, we have the players," Kremer added. "We know that if the forwards are performing well, we have players at the back that will allow us to fly a little bit more, so we'll see on Saturday. "In the meantime, we have to stay calm. There's work to do, so we have to fine-tune the details and be ready for the weekend," he said. REUTERS
