Jockey who ‘practically jumped off' hot favourite slapped with 18 month ban

Lemos De Souza hit the deck shorly after the stalls opened
A jockey who 'practically jumped off' a hot favourite right at the start of a race has been slapped with an 18 month suspension. Brazilian rider Lemos 'Lai Lai' De Souza, 33, is one of the leading riders in Malaysia with 32 wins in 2025, and has ridden 300 winners in the region.
He was aboard Pacific Power in the ninth race at Selangor Turf Club on July 6 for the region's champion trainer Jason Ong. The two-year-old had finished placed in his three previous starts. He went off favourite for the 7f race but punters learned their fate as soon as the starting gates opened when De Souza immediately fell off and hit the ground. Drawn in barrier one, on the inside, he appeared to throw himself to his left as he came off.
Race commentator Devon Pretorius said: 'Lai Lai De Souza has come off. Not too sure what happened there, but he's come straight off the horse straight from the start, so Pacific Power is riderless and Lai Lai De Souza is down at the start.'
De Souza managed to get back on his feet and walk to an ambulance and once the race was completed Pretorius went back to have another look at the incident.

'A quick look at the replay here,' he said. 'Pacific Power jumps. I'm not too sure if the saddle slipped and then he pretty much knew his fate about 10 metres out of the starting and just practically jumped off the horse as he knew he wasn't going to get his foot back in the irons on his right side.'
Footage of the incident has had thousands of views on social media with many observers coming to their own conclusions.
The stewards report noted: 'Jockey was dislodged from his horse shortly after the start. A review into this incident will be held at a date to be fixed.'
Lemos De Souza: received 18 month ban
However De Souza, who gave up his remaining rides, left the country to get medical attention in Singapore.
He returned to action at the track on Sunday where he had ten mounts, including for the owner and trainer of Pacific Power, scoring on Pacific Warrior.
The jockey appeared a stewards panel and members of the Selangor Turf Club's committee on Monday where he was found guilty of 'failing to ride his horse to the satisfaction of the stewards', according to The Straight.
De Souza pleaded not guilty but the panel handed an 18 month suspension until January 21 2027, fined him £8,800 and also made an order that he would not be eligible for a licence until 12 months after he has completed the sentence.

Antony rejects third transfer offer to leave Manchester United

Antony has rejected a third offer to leave Manchester United as he holds out for a move to Real Betis. The Brazilian forward enjoyed a much-needed revival at Betis after being loaned out by United in January. Manchester United spent £82m to sign Antony from Ajax in 2022 but are trying to sell him just three years later. The 25-year-old regarded as one of the biggest transfer flops in Premier League history, scored five league goals across his first two seasons at Old Trafford. Given his recent struggles, United fans were surprised to see Antony thrive at Real Betis, where he scored nine goals and helped Manuel Pellegrini's side reach the Conference League final. Pellegrini has instructed Betis to bring Antony back to the club on a permanent transfer but the deal is not straightforward given the numbers involved. Manchester United want around £30m for Antony and the Brazil international is on a huge salary worth more than £4m-a-year. Despite the difficulty in signing Antony, Real Betis are expected to approach United with a new offer in the coming days. Spanish outlet Sport say Antony is desperate to return to Sevilla and is 'unwilling' to join any club other than Betis. As a result Antony is 'refusing to listen' to a lucrative transfer approach from the Saudi Pro League and has instead indicated he will take a pay-cut to return to Real Betis. Antony, Real Betis Jadon Sancho, Juventus Alejandro Garnacho, Chelsea Tyrell Malacia, Saudi Arabia Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr have expressed interest in signing Antony but the winger has his heart set on Betis. According to reports, Antony has already rejected approaches from Brazilian clubs Botafogo and Sao Paulo as he wants to remain in Europe. Given his desire to sign for Betis, Antony is prepared to wait until the last couple of weeks of the transfer window when he hopes the La Liga side will reach an agreement with Manchester United. More Trending Antony is one of a number of players Ruben Amorim is hoping to offload before the summer transfer deadline. The Red Devils, who have signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, have also put Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho up for sale. The sales of several unwanted players would not only trim Amorim's squadbut increase the club's transfer kitty as they consider a bid for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Manchester United, who start the new season on August 17 against Arsenal, are also interested in signing a new goalkeeper to compete with Andre Onana. Bruno Guimaraes puts hands around Cristian Romero's THROAT as pair clash during friendly

Tottenham took on Premier League rivals Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in Seoul on Sunday and there were a few dramatic incidents between the two teams including between Cristian Romero and Bruno Guimaraes Bruno Guimaraes and Cristian Romero clashed in Seoul with the Newcastle man putting his hands around the Tottenham star's throat. The two Premier League rivals clashed in Seoul on Sunday as part of their pre-season preparations. ‌ And it was a dramatic affair between the two sides, with the game finishing in a 1-1 draw - the goals coming via Brennan Johnson and Harvey Barnes. And there was even more drama before half-time between Brazilian midfielder Guimaraes and Argentine defender Romero. ‌ The Newcastle man had managed to evade a wild challenge from the defender just outside of the penalty area. The Brazilian was then shoved to the floor by Romero when trying to make space. ‌ Guimaraes reacted angrily to that push as he jumped up and put his hands around Romero's neck. The Brazilian was probably fortunate to escape further punishment but given the pre-season nature of the game, that might explain why. The flashpoint between the pair was not the only incident during the game. The match potentially represents Son Heung-min 's final game for the North London side. He was withdrawn just after the hour mark to great acclaim from supporters within the stadium. Meanwhile, midfielder James Maddison appeared to pick up what was a serious injury and had to be stretchered off of the pitch in the closing stages. Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Thomas Frank said: 'I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the respect from the Newcastle players. 'First we had the walkaround and then the team-mates gathered around and he was emotional. In the changing room it was more of the same. ‌ "I just said a few things but not much because it's about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful." Spurs now have just under two weeks left to go until their first Premier League match of the season against newly-promoted Burnley. Before that, they take on Bayern Munich in their final pre-season game. Spurs also take on French giants Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Elsewhere, Newcastle take on Aston Villa in their Premier League opener.

Jamie Vardy's feelings clear on Wrexham transfer as Premier League move eyed up

Jamie Vardy's feelings clear on Wrexham transfer as Premier League move eyed up Conor Coady has completed a move to Wrexham from Leicester City, with the defender's former Foxes team-mate Jamie Vardy among those to pay tribute to the 32-year-old Jamie Vardy with Conor Coady during their Leicester City days (Image: Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images) Jamie Vardy has lauded Conor Coady following the defender's transfer from Leicester City to Wrexham. The Foxes pocketed a tidy £2million from the deal as the Welsh club gears up for the Championship, having secured promotion last season. ‌ Coady had a challenging stint at the King Power Stadium, with an injury sidelining him at the start of the 2023/24 promotion season. Jannik Vestergaard filled his shoes and never relinquished his spot. ‌ Despite featuring intermittently in the Premier League, the 32-year-old couldn't stave off a dismal season that culminated in relegation. ‌ However, it appears that Coady left a favourable impression on Vardy, who bid farewell to Leicester at the close of the 2024/25 season when his contract expired. "All the best brother. What a player and person," Vardy remarked on Coady's farewell message to Leicester supporters. In an Instagram post, Coady expressed his gratitude: "A massive thank you to everyone connected to Leicester City for giving me the opportunity to wear your shirt and share the dressing room with some fantastic people," reports the Mirror. "Even though last season was tough for us all, I wish nothing but the best for the whole football club this season and beyond." Article continues below Vardy's name has been bandied about in connection with Wrexham this summer, although it seems unlikely that the 38-year-old will be heading to the Racecourse Ground. The future of the former England international remains uncertain as Wrexham press ahead with their transfer dealings. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have sanctioned Phil Parkinson to recruit six fresh faces for the squad. Wrexham are also targeting Premier League talent and are reportedly keen on securing Pedro Lima on loan from Wolves. The Molineux outfit pipped Chelsea to land the 19-year-old Brazilian's signature. ‌ The transfer materialised after Lima seemed to indicate he would join Chelsea from Sport Recife, yet the teenager eventually penned a five-year contract with Wolves. Wrexham could now provide the youngster with crucial game-time as they seek to cement their position in the Championship. Ex-Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie reckons Wrexham won't require long before mounting a Premier League promotion push. Article continues below Speaking to BoyleSports, Dowie said: "I think it's a matter of time before Wrexham are challenging. I think they really will be up there challenging. You look at the club and look at even some of the teams that are in the Championship, I think it's harder ever to get out of this league. "Having said that, Wrexham have the fan base, they have the backing, it takes a very clever management, but they've got a very clever manager. There's no doubt they will be challenging and there is every chance they can challenge this year, but Phil Parkinson would be very happy, I think with 10th and above."
