Soccer-Inter Miami coach Mascherano sees Club World Cup benefits despite PSG defeat
(Reuters) -Inter Miami exited the Club World Cup with a 4-0 defeat to Paris St Germain on Sunday, but coach Javier Mascherano believes their experience at the tournament will benefit both his side and Major League Soccer.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
With eight-times Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi in their ranks, Inter Miami reached the knockout stages by securing second place in Group A.
However, their decisive defeat by PSG, Messi's former team, highlighted the gap between the MLS and top European clubs.
KEY QUOTES
Mascherano: "There's a huge lesson to be learned from here. We're going to be reviewing all of this and I think that they go hand in hand now if we are going to be able to take stock of this experience.
"I think that this is going to help us when we take this to our National League. It goes without saying that it depends on our own personal intelligence that we have at our disposal as a team to be able to leverage this experience.
"PSG is a wonderful team. They have high-calibre players and an amazing head coach, Luis Enrique, who I know personally. I feel that this is a team that will be remembered."

Soccer-Dortmund defender Couto making quick recovery after injury-coach Kovac
BERLIN -Borussia Dortmund defender Yan Couto is making a speedy recovery from a knee injury he picked up in Monday'sGerman Cup first round, coach Niko Kovac said, but it was still unclear if he would be fit in time for their Bundesliga opener on Saturday. The 23-year-old Brazil international was injured after a reckless challenge by Kelsey Owusu in second-half stoppage time of Dortmund's 1-0 win over third-tier Rot-Weiss Essen in the German Cup first round with club officials initially fearing he could be out for a long time. "Yan looked good today and he even completed parts of the training," Kovac told a press conference on Thursday. "His leg is still strapped but he looked impressively good." Dortmund, who have qualified for the Champions League after finishing fourth last season, could, however, still be without fellow defender Julian Ryerson who is nursing a knock on the calf ahead of the league opener against St Pauli on Saturday. Kovac, who took over at the start of the year and steadied Dortmund's course, pushing them up from 10th in the table to fourth spot on the league finale, said hewas eyeing a strong first half of the season this time to set the foundations for a good campaign. "We only had three weeks of preparations," Kovac said. Dortmund, along with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, took part in the Club World Cup in the United States in June and had a shorter-than-usual pre-season. "Our wish is to play a good first half of the season. No one knows where they are at the league start. But our ambitions are clear. We wanted to advance in the Cup and we also want to get points against St Pauli." (Reporting by Karolos GrohmannEditing by Christian Radnedge)

Soccer-Jackson to miss West Ham match as Chelsea await possible transfer
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Semi Final - Fluminense v Chelsea - MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S. - July 8, 2025 Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson in action with Fluminense's Ignacio REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson will sit out Friday's Premier League trip to West Ham United despite being available pending a possible transfer, head coach Enzo Maresca said on Thursday. The 24-year-old Senegal international has been linked with Aston Villa, a move that would reunite the player with Unai Emery, his former manager at Spanish side Villarreal. "He is available, but he's not going to be part of the squad," Maresca told reporters. "We have two strikers, we have two players in that position and also we know that something can happen before the transfer window closes." Maresca said he was focused on preparations for the game at the London Stadium and did not know how close a move for Jackson might be. The Premier League transfer window closes on September 1. The Italian said France forward Christopher Nkunku was in the same situation as Jackson while Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell were training apart "waiting for some solution". Media reports have linked Nkunku, 27, with a move to Bayern Munich and his previous club RB Leipzig. Both Nkunku and Jackson have fallen out of favour with Chelsea signing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap earlier in the summer window. Chelsea are looking for an internal replacement for defender Levi Colwill, who could miss most of the season due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Maresca said centre back Wesley Fofana was happy at the club amid speculation he might no longer be part of the manager's future plans after references to Chelsea were removed from the player's Instagram account. "I speak with Wes every day. He's very, very happy, first of all because he's back from injury. He's joining all the sessions," said the boss. "As I said after the Palace game, he was on the bench just to be with us. But from tomorrow, he is with us and can also get some minutes. We are happy and he is happy." Club World Cup champions Chelsea started the season with a goalless home draw against FA Cup holders Crystal Palace last Sunday. West Ham lost their opening game 3-0 at promoted Sunderland. Champions Bayern Munich in pole position for Bundesliga start despite short pre-season
BERLIN -Champions Bayern Munich kick off the new Bundesliga season against visitors RB Leipzig on Friday, knowing they are the team to beat once more even though they had a shortened pre-season following the Club World Cup in the United States. Having won the league title 12 times in the last 13 years, the Bavarians have spent more than any other club in the close season to bring in Luis Diaz from Liverpool for a reported 70 million euros ($81.60 million) -- their third highest transfer ever -- as well as Germany internationals Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof to boost the quality of their squad. However, they also had a shortened break and pre-season preparation, along with fellow Club World Cup competitors Borussia Dortmund, due to the tournament in the United States stretching well into July. Bayern still earned their first trophy of the season last week, beating German Cup winners VfB Stuttgart 2-1 in the German Supercup on Saturday, despite some players cramping. "The cramping, with a short pre-season it is normal, especially in a final," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany told a press conference on Thursday. "But we are mentally here. The hunger is here. I don't want to talk about any negative impact of the Club World Cup. We want to take another step to get better. The motivation is not less than last year." "The bar has to be higher," Kompany said. "As regards the favourites tag, yes, we are the champions so that's ok, but that won't win us the game tomorrow. For me what is important is to have a hunger of a team that has not won anything and wants to win something for the first time." Bayer Leverkusen are undergoing a full overhaul following the departure of coach Xabi Alonso, who led them to the domestic league and Cup double in 2024, and star player Florian Wirtz, along with half a dozen other key players. With playmaker Granit Xhaka also gone, new coach Erik ten Haag has his work cut out as he succeeds Alonso on the Leverkusen bench, and is unlikely to instantly mount a serious title challenge. They start their league campaign on Saturday against visiting Hoffenheim. Bayern's most likely title rivals look to be Dortmund, who travel to St Pauli on Saturday. Coach Niko Kovac, who took over midway through last season, steadied the ship and led them to a Champions League qualifying spot. He has since broughtin Jobe Bellingham and Yan Couto from the English leagues. Hamburg SV will mark their return to top flight after seven years in the second division with a season opener at Borussia Moenchengladbach, having won promotion along with Cologne last season.
