Chariaan Eksteen is gearing up for the UJ Track and Field Summer Challenge.
As a teacher and athlete, Eksteen's passion for running began in high school, where she started athletics in Grade Eight as a long-distance runner and quickly progressed to competing in school competitions.
'I've experimented with various events, but it wasn't until Grade 12 that I found my fit. I tried the 100m and 200m, earning a spot on the school relay team, and also competed in the 400m, making it to the provincials.
'After matric, I joined Brakpan Athletics Club, but recently switched to Boxer Athletics.
'In the CGA competitions, I placed fifth in one of the events hosted at UJ last year. My training is focused on shaving off seconds and achieving a personal best.

'I've known my current coach, Thulani Sibeko, for a while, having trained with him at Boksburg. His encouragement and familiarity made the decision to switch clubs an easy one.
'I'm currently preparing for the UJ Track and Field Summer Challenge.
'As a Grade RR teacher with a passion for child development, I've also pursued a Bachelor's degree in Foundation Phase.
'I enjoy mentoring my students and helping them develop their athletic skills, and I'm committed to making a positive impact on their young lives,' said Eksteen.

Warriors of the West's star runner dominates in Westonaria

The Warriors of the West Athletics Club's star athlete, Azania Noah, performed like a runaway train on fire during the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Cross Country League 5 held at the Westonaria Sports Complex on July 12. Azania ran in the boys' U16 6km event. From the outset, he broke away from the other contestants, along with Sipho Ellis Mollo from Munseville Kopano Athletics Club. Azania went on a solo flight to cross the finish line first in a time of 19 minutes and nine seconds, while arch rival Tyran Brooks from Boxer Athletic Club came in second with 19 minutes and 23 seconds. Tshepang Ntlatla from Diepsloot Athletics Club took the third spot in 19 minutes and 29 seconds, while Sipho Mollo placed fourth in a time of 19 minutes and 55 seconds. 'I just ran the race according to what my coach taught me. The plan is to focus on the next league and the CGA Cross Country Championships in August,' he said, whose victory had supporters excited and his mother proud. Another teammate who did well in their respective events included Atlehang Mokhobo in the U14 4km event with a time of 15 minutes and five seconds. Owethu Maluleke won the girls' U9 2km race in a time of eight minutes and eight seconds, while Relopofaditswe Ntsane won gold in the boys' U10 race with a time of seven minutes and 31 seconds. Olerato Nyathela also finished first in the girls' U11 3km in a time of 13 minutes and 15 seconds. Other top local athletes present were Cornelia Joubert, who won the Women's Sub-Veteran 4km event in a time of 15 minutes and 35 seconds, as well as Kabelo Melamu, who came first in the senior men's 4km race. 'It was indeed pleasing to host athletics again in our facility. We, however, had challenges due to theft and vandalism of the pipes for some weeks, but we did provide a water truck to mitigate the challenge,' said Rand West City facility officer Ronnie Medupe. CGA general manager Mandla Radebe also expressed his satisfaction. 'It is inspiring to have back-to-back events which paint a good picture for athletics in our local area,' he said.

Glenrose Xaba gunning for whopping sixth national half-marathon title in a row

Glenrose Xaba finished fifth at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K on July 13 in a time of 31:50. Glenrose Xaba will chase her sixth national half-marathon title in a row for Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) as part of a star-studded field at the ASA Road Running Championships in Namakgale, Phalaborwa, on Saturday. Men's defending champion Elroy Gelant will also be among the pre-race favourites in the half-marathon that is incorporated into the F21 Half-Marathon. Xaba was the first South African home over the 21.1km distance at last year's national championships in Gqeberha, finishing fourth overall in 1:13:42. Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) athlete Cacisile Sosibo was fifth, in a time of 1:13:51. She is likely to once again be Xaba's strongest challenger. Gelant, who overcame tough conditions to win the SA men's title in Gqeberha last year, will be joined in the line-up by Athletics Central North West (ACNW) teammate Thabang Mosiako, also a former national champion. They are up against a field that also includes in-form athlete Bennet Seloyi, representing Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA). Xaba holds the national marathon and 10km records on the road, as well as the 5 000m and 10 000m records on the track. The multi-talented star is also eyeing ranking points in her bid to qualify for the track 5 000m and 10 000m at the World Championships in Tokyo in September. The ASA Road Running Championships will also be key to national marathon record holder Gelant's build-up to the world champs. He has made clear his ambition to grab a podium finish at the Tokyo showpiece, after finishing in eleventh place in the marathon at the Paris Olympics.

Lucie Ilunga, a 400m and 800m sprint specialist, has come a long way since her early days as a netball player. Now in Grade 12 at Queens High School, she shares her journey into athletics, guided by coach Elvis Khoza. Ilunga only began to take athletics seriously in Grade 8, despite having a strong netball background. ALSO READ: CGA hosts cross-country in Germiston 'Running wasn't really my thing,' she recalled. 'But I took part in a school athletics event and, to my surprise, finished 29th.' After that race, Khoza approached her with an invitation to train. 'At the time, my heart was still with netball. I had just played my last matches at the district games and had been selected for the provincial team, so I didn't think much of it at first,' she explained. But Khoza's persistence paid off. 'He convinced me to give running a try, and my journey has been fascinating ever since.' A promising athlete with global potential Now affiliated with Thembisa Athletics Club, Ilunga has made remarkable progress. In her first year, she won the 800m at the OR Tambo Socini Games and qualified to compete in Italy. 'Unfortunately, Covid-19 had other plans,' she said, referring to the cancelled trip. Balancing athletics with academics and leadership Beyond the track, Ilunga shines academically. She has served on the school's Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for four consecutive years and currently holds the position of Deputy Head Girl. 'I've received academic merits since Grade 11 and was awarded the best leader award,' she said. Despite a demanding school year, Ilunga is working hard to secure a scholarship for university. 'Next year I aim to study something I'm passionate about, like business management.' She continues her training at Germiston Stadium as she prepares for upcoming competitions.
