Bailey Smith sparks controversy with 'nose beers' remark - as Geelong coach defends the superstar

Daily Mail24-05-2025

Geelong star Bailey Smith has once again found himself at the centre of an AFL storm, this time raising eyebrows with a controversial Instagram post about the use of drugs.
Smith relished the spotlight in his first encounter with the Bulldogs, starring in the Cats' 20.7 (127) to 16.17 (113) win at GMHBA Stadium on Thursday night.
The 24-year-old was the centre of attention after lighting the fuse for the grudge match with several verbal barbs during the build-up.
Smith stood up under pressure, tallying 33 disposals and six clearances as the Bulldogs mostly opted against trying to ruffle his feathers.
After the game, Smith posted photos from the occasion to Instagram, but it was the comments section that has caught people's attention.
One follower asked the Geelong midfielder if he'd had 'nose beers after the game mate?'.
Nose beers is another name for the illicit drug cocaine.
The comment was soon deleted, but not before many people had shared it online.
Smith posted afterwards that he was 'taking the p*ss' telling sponsors 'I love you'.
Cats coach Chris Scott has since defended Smith over the post.
'My take on it, not just in the footy world but in society, you can't have it both ways,' Scott told ABC radio.
'If you are going to embrace this idea that the new world is sharing everything online and bantering and having a bit of fun, but as soon as it goes over the line we all have conniptions.
'We all like comics that are on edge, but as soon as they say something that is confronting to someone's sensibility, we want to cancel them.
'I just think that's a loss of perspective, and with Bailey, remember he is 23.
'You've got to be careful that these things don't drift, and drift, and drift until it becomes something uncontrollable, but I think it's an example of keeping everything in perspective.
'It's a balance between, certainly not condoning behaviour, you prefer didn't happen, but also keeping it in perspective as much as possible.'
Smith went on to say that he is OK with Smith to walk that 'edge'.
'I would much rather guys that are a little bit edgy but are really driven and competitive, as opposed to the straighty 180s who struggle a little bit more when the heat is really on,' he said.

NRL player Matt Allwood who became a TV star suffers horror spinal injury in tackle gone wrong

Former Canberra Raiders and New Zealand Warriors star Matt Allwood is awaiting surgery after suffering a serious spinal injury during a match last Saturday. The 32-year-old - who also starred in the most recent season of Alone Australia on SBS - was badly hurt when he stopped a rival player from scoring a try while playing his first match for the Dora Creek Swampies. The club, which is located on the NSW central coast, has launched an appeal to help the father of three, who is currently unable to work. 'Matt Allwood - a proud father, husband and incredible football player took the field as a Swampie for the first time on Saturday against Waratah,' the club wrote. 'As Matt made an incredible try saving tackle, he unfortunately injured himself, sustaining a very serious spinal injury. 'Matt has an uncertain road to recovery, and is unable to work as he is still awaiting to find out the full extent of his injuries and awaiting surgery, this certainly will put a strain on the young family.' The former Raiders and Warriors player (pictured with his family) was badly hurt while he made a try-saving tackle The Raiders - where Allwood played in 2014 before switching to the Warriors - also directed their fans to the fundraiser on social media. Allwood appeared on Alone Australia earlier this year, with the show challenging Aussies to survive for as long as possible after being dropped off in separate wilderness areas where they are devoid of human contact. He lasted 16 days in the bush in the rugged West Coast Range of Tasmania as he competed against nine others. 'To be honest, I was rattled,' he said after returning to civilisation. 'It was too much being out there on my own away from my family with no contact.' After the show aired, his wife Ainsely posted a heartfelt message to him on Facebook. ''SO BLOODY PROUD OF YOU MATTY!!' she wrote. 'Anyone sitting at home on their couch watching, thinking they could do better, go on. APPLY!! 'Like to see you not eat for 10 days. 'Longest 1st tap out in the history of Alone Australia and 2nd longest tap out in history of the whole Alone Series!' Allwood's upbringing on a NSW cattle farm was great preparation for the show, and his Instagram account is full of videos and photos of him practising his bushcraft. 'Growing up, I didn't watch Bob the Builder - I was out hunting grandpa's rabbits,' he told the Warriors.

Married At First Sight star Martha Kalifatidis sparks speculation she is pregnant with confusing Instagram post

Martha Kalifatidis sent fans into a frenzy on Wednesday after a confusing social media post had them questioning if she was expecting another baby. The former Married At First Sight star, 37, gave her Instagram followers a sneak peek of a fashion event she attended last week. The dinner, which was hosted by Aussie brand VRG GRL, welcomed the likes of celebrity hair guru Gabrielle Roccuzzo, stylist Jess Pecoraro and content creator Emily Yates. Martha, who already shares son Lucius with fiancé Michael Brunelli, stunned in a bright red button-up top, which she stylishly paired with baggy jeans, blue strappy heels and chunky Anna Rossi bangles on her arms. In the photo dump, the reality star shared pictures of the dimly lit restaurant, bowls of ravioli pasta and her glamorous friends - as well as a photo of a pregnant belly dressed in the same red cardigan. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Fans of the MAFS star flooded the comments section to point out the picture, speculating whether the photo was of Martha and if she was in fact pregnant. 'Who else ran straight to the comments to see if they saw what they think they saw....' one person wrote of the suggestive snap. 'Congrats if you're preggas…' one fan sweetly wrote, while another penned: 'The baby is coming.' Another sent Martha well-wishes, writing: 'Queen you're so brave and wish you all the besssssst with this pregnancy.' 'Did I just see a 'bump',' another asked. It didn't take long for one fan to figure out that the belly didn't belong to Martha, but rather her friend and influencer Oriwa LeFevre, who wore the same top on the night out. 'It's @oriwa everyone, you nearly got us Martha,' the fan wrote. This isn't the first time pregnancy rumours have swirled around the social media personality. In January, Martha addressed rumours she is expecting her second child in an Instagram post, giving her fans a glimpse at her idyllic vacation in Thailand with fiancé Michael Brunelli and the couple's young son, Lucius. In the caption, she told her fans she'd been offline as she was on holiday, after going two weeks without posting to Instagram. 'Hi everyone. I'm not pregnant (thanks for asking though),' she wrote in her caption alongside the series of images. 'I was just having some time off in Thailand. It was swell, missed you all,' she continued. In the photos, Martha showed off her figure in a black swimsuit as she enjoyed a soak with her toddler. She also kicked back on a boat, as well as working her angles in the shallows of the turquoise ocean.

Jarome Luai called up by NSW Blues to replace injured Mitch Moses for State of Origin Game 2

Jarome Luai will replace Mitch Moses as NSW's five-eighth for the second State of Origin match after a calf strain dashed Moses's hopes of playing. Moses pulled up sore while running the ball during a training session at NSW's Blue Mountains camp on Thursday, injuring the same calf that troubled him earlier this year. The Blues have sent Moses for scans on the injury that delivers a blow to their hopes of sealing a series victory by winning Origin II in Perth on Wednesday. 'It's terrible, isn't it? Mitch played really well in game one,' said Blues coach Laurie Daley. 'We're unsure of how bad it is but he won't be any good for Wednesday with the short turnaround.' Daley called Luai on Thursday to ask whether he would be available after Moses beat him for selection in NSW's game-one win. Luai, who had just finished on the training paddock at Wests Tigers, answered Daley's distress call to reunite with former NSW halfback Nathan Cleary in the halves. It's the second time in as many years that injury has forced the Blues to turn to a player they initially snubbed, with James Tedesco coming in for Dylan Edwards to play fullback in last year's series opener. 'Luai handled it [the initial rejection] with such class and he said if I needed him, he'd be ready to go,' Daley said. 'So when I rang him, he said, 'Sweet, I'm ready to go'. That filled me with confidence.' Luai played five-eighth in all three games of NSW's 2024 series win and has featured alongside NSW halfback Cleary at Origin level six times already. The pair also won four consecutive NRL premierships together at Penrith before Luai joined the Tigers this season. 'Back playing together, there'd be an energy and a synergy there,' Daley said. '[Luai] played there last year, has got a good combination with Nathan and he's that left-side player. He'll do a fine job.' The NRL has already granted the Blues an exemption to bring Luai into the team from outside the 20-man squad that Daley had named on Tuesday. Luai's call-up means Canterbury five-eighth Matt Burton, considered the other contender to replace Moses, will remain 18th man. Daley defended the call to once again overlook Burton, who will watch from the sidelines as NSW's replacement player for a fifth time in seven Origin games. Burton's ability to cover the outside backs and halves has made him a favoured choice for the emergency role. Sign up to Australia Sport Get a daily roundup of the latest sports news, features and comment from our Australian sports desk after newsletter promotion '[Burton] would be disappointed, you'd want him to be disappointed, but he gives us a bit more versatility in that 18th-man role,' Daley said. 'He can play a few more positions. I just think Jarome and Nathan's combination, they've had so much success.' Luai will arrive at the Blues' team hotel in Leura on Thursday afternoon, expected to bring his trademark high energy to a squad reeling from the injury. 'He'll walk in and everyone will feed off his energy,' Daley said. 'I don't think anything fazes Jarome. He's always up for a challenge and the bigger the challenge, the better he goes. He's a guy that thrives in this environment. It's not an issue for him so it shouldn't be an issue for anyone else.'
