Driver in deadly Mattoon nursing home crash admits to smoking a ‘few hours' before
On May 2, 54-year-old Curtis Meadows hit the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, pinning two victims against a wall. Police said that for unknown reasons, the vehicle had driven around 335 yards in a mostly straight line before turning onto S Logan St. and hitting the building.
Then, the vehicle traveled about 20 feet into the building, causing 'massive' damage to the structure and inside of the building.

When police responded to the crash, they found 82-year-old Sharon Harpster pinned between the wall and the bed. Initially, she was conscious and alert, police said, but was pronounced dead soon after being pulled from the debris.
The second victim was pinned underneath debris. After she was freed, she was transported to Carle Hospital in 'critical condition.'
Police talked to Meadows at the scene. After the crash, he was 'alert and aware of the accident,' police said, and had a minor injury to his thumb.
Curtis claimed he fell unconscious after the car turned onto S Logan St., according to police documents. When he awoke, he said he could hear people screaming and realized he was in an accident. Curtis also admitted to smoking cannabis a few hours before the crash.
Police offered Curtis a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST's), and he agreed to submit. According to the sworn statement, Curtis had 'red, glassy, watery, bloodshot eyes, puffy eyelids and a dry mouth.' Police added that he showed multiple signs of impairment during DUI testing, which led to his arrest for suspicion of DUI for cannabis and potentially other substances.
Mattoon City Council approves new dispensary
Curtis also agreed to submit blood and urine chemical testing at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Once there, he was admitted to the ER after staff learned that he had become 'momentarily' unconscious.
Police said Curtis would be transferred to the Coles County Sheriff's Office to be detained.
The Coles County State's Attorney Office confirmed that Meadows was denied pretrial release by a judge Tuesday afternoon.

Pitt Meadows Secondary teacher charged with child luring, child pornography offences
A high school teacher in Pitt Meadows, B.C. has been charged with multiple child exploitation-related offences, according to the B.C. Prosecution Service. Court records show 30-year-old Lovesh Ramsaha has been charged with four counts, including internet luring of a child under 18, making sexually explicit material available to a child, making child pornography and distributing it. Ramsaha had been teaching at Pitt Meadows Secondary. The prosecution service said the alleged offences occurred between August 2024 and February 2025 at or near Pitt Meadows. In a statement to CBC News, Ridge Meadows RCMP said they launched an investigation in February after receiving a complaint regarding alleged sexual offences involving a local teacher. Because the suspect was in a position of authority, police said investigators acted quickly and worked with the school district to take appropriate steps. Pitt Meadows Secondary principal Colin Sharpe informed families in a letter Friday that Ramsaha had been removed from his teaching duties "as soon as the district became aware of the allegations." CBC News has obtained a copy of that letter. "Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students is always our highest priority," the letter said. The B.C. teacher registry shows an "undertaking not to practice" was placed on Ramsaha's file in March. Few other details have been released due to privacy reasons and pending criminal charges. CBC News has attempted to contact Ramsaha but has not heard back. Ramsaha is currently not in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 21 in Port Coquitlam, B.C.

UPDATE on 8/13 at 11:03 a.m. FORD COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — State Police clarified that the investigation in Sibley Tuesday night was in response to a report of a person walking through fields in the area. Wednesday morning, State Police confirmed with WCIA that officers responded to the area of IL-165 near the McLean/Ford County line just after 7 p.m. after they received the report. They then searched the area for several hours, but no one was located. There is no further information available at this time. FORD COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Members of the public are being asked to avoid IL-165 in the Sibley area as law enforcement conduct an 'investigation.' The Illinois State Police said they, along with multiple local agencies are responding in Sibley, near the McLean and Ford County line.
