Woman tried to smuggle crack cocaine worth £800k into UK in Parmesan wheel
Jamie Choi, a US national, was stopped by Border Force officers at Heathrow airport on May 25 after arriving on a flight from Brazil.
Officers asked the 23-year-old from California about a Parmesan cheese wheel she was travelling with which weighed 8kg.
Choi claimed a friend had suggested she buy the cheese from Lima, Peru, for them to try, but when officers examined the wheel they found it contained crack cocaine.
Forensic analysis later revealed the drug to be 94 per cent pure, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.
The investigation was referred to the NCA, whose officers found that Choi had travelled from Los Angeles to Lima on May 20.
The next day, she travelled to Asuncion, Paraguay, and on May 24, she flew to Heathrow airport, after connecting through Sao Paulo, Brazil.
A notebook was found in Choi's handbag, which contained a single handwritten memo dated May 21, the day she left Lima. It read: 'I dropped out of UCSB [University of California Santa Barbara] on Monday.
'Currently I am in Paraguay in South America solo travelling for the first time. It's been amazing so far.'
Choi, who was charged with importing Class A drugs, pleaded guilty to the offence at Isleworth Crown Court on August 6. She was jailed for five years and three months on Tuesday.
NCA senior investigating officer Barry Vinall said: 'We've seen people trying to smuggle cocaine into the UK hidden inside all manner of innocuous looking items.
'But Border Force and the National Crime Agency are well-practised in finding drugs, whatever the disguise.
'Smuggling drugs into the UK is simply not a risk work taking – it has consequences, as seen in this case.'

Shock moment ‘jewellery thief' is taken down & put in a ‘lion killer' chokehold by black belt tourists in hols hotspot
THIS is the astonishing moment a "jewellery thief" is wrestled to the ground and held in a "lion killer" chokehold by tourists. Brazilian brothers Gabriel and Gustavo Galindo sprung into action after hearing screams from a man claiming he had been robbed. 4 4 4 Both black belts in Jiu-Jitsu, the siblings quickly put the alleged thief into a "lion killer" chokehold - a popular martial art move that can, in some instances, be deadly. When police arrived 10 minutes later to escort the man away, applause and cheers erupted for the two brothers. Shocking footage shows the man pinned to the ground as he attempts to wriggle out of the stranglehold. According to Brazilian news, the alleged thief tried to bite Gabriel before being warned to "stay still" or leave without an arm. Gabriel said: "I put him on the ground to show him Brazilian jiu-jitsu. 'By then, there was already a crowd of people enraged with anger towards the unfortunate man. "Some angry people started to beat him up, but I didn't have the heart to let them hurt him too badly.' "We stopped the robbery, taught the thief a lesson, and kept everyone safe." Posting the video online, Gabriel quipped: 'Enjoying ourselves in Barcelona.' The clip has massed thousands of views, with hundreds congratulating the holidaygoers for their efforts. Thief tackled & put in chokehold by tourist after 'trying to steal camera' One user hailed the lads "champions" while another crowned them modern day superheroes. The pair, who were in Barcelona, Spain on a European tour with their family at the time, later said they were left with a "good story to tell". Gabriel said: "And we went back to enjoying our day in Barcelona—with a great story to tell.' Barcelona is notorious for its rampant thieves who target unsuspecting tourists. Just a couple months ago, extraordinary footage emerged of another tourist tackling a thief to the ground and holding him in a chokehold. Meanwhile, aast August, Sir Ben Ainslie was robbed at knifepoint for his £17,000 Rolex in the Spanish city. Ainslie, 47, recalled the horror as a gang mugged him while out for a meal on Saturday night in Barcelona. The terrifying attack unfolded when he was leaving a restaurant, as reported by local media La Vanguardia. And last year, unbelievable footage captured a thief swiping a Brit tourist's phone just as he proposed to his girlfriend in Barcelona. Footage showed Charlie Bullock surprising his now-fiancée Hannah McNaghten by going down on one knee - but the romantic moment is cut short as a thug is captured nabbing the device. Charlie propped up his phone on the wall as the two posed for a picture outside Barcelona 's famous Arc de Triomf, with Hannah totally unaware of what would happen next. And in 2022, Barcelona FC star Robert Lewandowski chased a thief who stole his £59,000 watch as he signed autographs. Before an evening training session, the Poland hitman stopped to greet fans outside the club's Ciutat Esportiva complex. But one crafty thief used the distraction to open Lewandowski's car door and make off with the high-end time piece. 4

BA pilot suspended after breaking anti-terror rules by leaving cockpit door open during flight so family could see him
A BRITISH Airways pilot was suspended for allegedly breaking anti-terror rules by leaving the cockpit door open during a flight. The captain wanted his family, who were among passengers from Heathrow to New York, to see him operating the controls, sources said. His actions alarmed other fliers and, after crew reported him, he was grounded. It meant return flight BA174, due in London last Friday, was cancelled — causing disruption for hundreds of passengers due to fly on the twin-engine Boeing 777-300. The Civil Aviation Authority launched an urgent investigation into the security breach. A source said: 'Crew and passengers immediately noticed the cockpit door was open and wanted to know what was happening. "It made passengers incredibly uneasy. 'The door was wide open for a significant time — enough for people to worry and comment. " BA colleagues were so alarmed that the pilot was reported in the US and bosses had to suspend him.' Since the 9/11 terrorists hijacked US passenger jets and crashed them into New York skyscrapers in September 2001, security has been stepped up so the cockpit doors are always locked. Sources at BA said the pilot's suspension was in line with policy. He is already back flying as no security threat was identified. Ban Britain's most dangerous drivers for life, say Tories
Britain's most dangerous drivers should be banned from the roads for life, the Conservatives have said. Just one per cent of people convicted of causing death by dangerous driving last year were handed a lifetime driving ban, new figures reveal. Just half a per cent of those convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving were banned for life. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: 'Under this Government, you can kill someone with your car and be back on the road in just five years. 'In England and Wales, the most dangerous drivers are being let back behind the wheel every single day because of soft sentencing guidelines. This isn't justice – it's a system that clears killers to drive again and again and again. It's time to introduce automatic lifetime bans for the worst offenders. It costs nothing, it saves lives, it is time to act.' Sentencing Council rules set the minimum ban for causing death by dangerous driving at five years. Causing serious injury by dangerous driving attracts a minimum ban of two years, even at the highest culpability and harm levels. Sir Simon Clarke, the director of the Onward think-tank, which carried out the research, said: 'It's outrageous that killers and serial offenders are being handed their licences back like nothing happened. Lifetime bans should be the norm, not the exception.' Onward's research highlighted cases including that of Cain Byrne, 20, who – despite never having held a driving licence – ran over and killed an 81-year-old cyclist moments after inhaling laughing gas from a balloon. He was sentenced earlier this year to 11 years and six months in a young offenders' institution, and banned from driving for 17 years and eight months. In another case highlighted, a motorist who ran over a cyclist after the victim spat on his Land Rover during a road rage row was jailed for 18 months and banned from getting behind the wheel for three years. Nick Cook was left with a broken pelvis, six broken ribs and a punctured liver after the road rage incident. Alan Moult, then aged 74, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving over the July 2020 confrontation. Three years ago, the Conservatives toughened sentencing rules for causing death by dangerous driving, with offenders facing life sentences from 2022 onwards. The current Sentencing Council rules, which judges must obey, say the typical sentence will fall between two and 18 years imprisonment.
