Vulnerable native animals killed as invasive predator breaks into Aussie zoo

Yahoo17 hours ago
In a rare security breach, a wild animal has broken into an Australian zoo and unleashed on the resident animals inside. Despite being surrounded by high brick walls, some topped with barbed wire, an invasive red fox somehow breached security.
Details of the heartbreaking incident were released this week by Melbourne Zoo, which confirmed to Yahoo News that several animals were killed, including long-nosed potoroos, a species federally listed as vulnerable to extinction. Wild free-roaming native animals, including brushtail possums, also fell victim to the fox.
Zoos Victoria said via email that it was unknown exactly how long the fox was roaming its grounds, but added it was 'several weeks ago'. It is also yet to be established how the animal breached the zoo's fences.
'Additional monitoring and security measures have been implemented, as have regular, ongoing risk assessments by a pest specialist. This is proving effective with no further evidence of incursions by foxes,' a spokesperson for the zoo wrote.
Foxes are incredibly intelligent, and trapping them is difficult, even for experienced pest controllers. How Zoos Victoria successfully caught the animal remains a mystery, as it would only reveal the animal was 'humanely dealt with' by contractors. Luckily, its efforts appear to have worked, and there has been no further evidence of foxes on its grounds.
While breaches of security are uncommon, they do occasionally occur. A decade ago, a fox entered the zoo's grounds and massacred 14 little penguins, forcing staff to move the survivors to a secure location until the predator was stopped.
Moments when animals have broken out of Aussie zoos
In popular culture, it's more common to imagine animals breaking out of zoos, and when this occurs it is usually major news.
The last major breach in Australia was in 2022 when five lions wandered from their enclosure at Taronga Zoo. That same year, a red panda escaped from Symbio Wildlife Park and was sadly killed by a vehicle on a main road.
Two years earlier, a small group of baboons escaped from a Sydney hospital, making international news. And in 2024, a false alarm about an escaped baboon led to Melbourne Zoo being temporarily forced into lockdown.
In another sad incident, a free-roaming possum living at Perth Zoo was thrown across an enclosure by a captive orangutan. The possum did not survive.

Incident highlights danger foxes pose to Australia
There are signs around the zoo's perimeter warning visitors not to leave gates open, to prevent foxes from entering. Foxes are known to live around Melbourne, including Royal Park, which surrounds the zoo.
The recent breach of Melbourne Zoo's security by the fox, highlights the threat the invasive predators pose to Australia's wildlife.
Following the introduction of European foxes in the 1800s, they have contributed to the rapid decline of native species. Much of Australia was once teaming with small marsupials, many of which are only seen in abundance in Tasmania, where the fox has not yet become established.
It's believed foxes played a role in the decline of greater bilbies. This species used to roam across 80 per cent of Australia, and now they are only found in isolated pockets of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and are listed as vulnerable to extinction.

France probes death of man on live video stream after violence and humiliations

French authorities are investigating the death of a man during a live video stream on the Kick live streaming platform, where he had regularly been shown enduring violence and humiliations. Prosecutors ordered an autopsy and opened an investigation into the death of the 46-year-old man in the village of Contes, north of Nice, on Monday. Clara Chappaz, junior minister for AI and digital technology, said Raphael Graven, known online as Jean Pormanove, had regularly featured in videos on Kick, where he was physically assaulted or humiliated by co-streamers as viewers watched live. 'The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he suffered are absolutely horrific,' she said on X. Kick Francais said on X it would cooperate with authorities and was undertaking a review of its French content. 'Our priority is to protect creators and ensure a safer environment on Kick,' it said, adding that 'all co-streamers who participated in this live broadcast have been banned pending the ongoing investigation'. Kick is an Australia-registered live streaming platform that shares revenue with its content creators. Chappaz said a judicial investigation is underway, that she had referred the matter to digital and audiovisual communication regulator Arcom and that she had filed a report to Pharos, France's internet portal for reporting illicit internet content. She said she asked Kick for explanations, adding: 'the responsibility of online platforms for dissemination of illegal content is not optional: it is the law'. Yassin Sadouni, a lawyer for one of two co-streamers seen abusing Pormanove, said on BFM television that Pormanove had cardiovascular problems and that the violence in the videos was not real but acted. 'All those scenes are just staged, they follow a script,' he said. French media have shown excerpts of hours-long videos during which Pormanove is seen suffering blows, insults, strangulation, dousing with paint and oil and being shot at with a paintball gun. It was not clear from the video excerpts if Pormanove voluntarily subjected himself to the violence or was forced to endure it, nor whether the action was real or staged.

Police sting nets 40kg meth, $1m cash and firearms

Nearly 40kg of drugs, $1 million in cash and multiple guns have been seized during a crackdown on organised criminals, resulting in the arrest of nine people. Western Australia Police have aimed at dismantling the drug operations of organised crime in the state over the past two months. Police conducted a four-day sting across Perth in July into illicit activities in the metropolitan area, uncovering a 34-year-old man as an alleged senior member of a criminal network supplying drugs. The probe began when the man allegedly told two other men, aged 27 and 30, to sell and supply methylamphetamine at a shopping centre car park in North Beach. Police uncovered 500g of the drug in a brown paper bag at the car park. Over the following days, police searched multiple homes and cars to find 17kg of meth and a Ferrari containing a flick knife, capsicum spray and unlawfully owned prescription drugs. Officers also found more than $530,000 in cash with around $300,000 hidden in a secret storage apartment alongside firearms including a shotgun, pistol and a round of ammunition. Police have charged six men and one woman in relation to the seizures and alleged crimes. "This major seizure has enabled us to identify members of a criminal network who were equipped and prepared to receive and distribute a significant number of illicit drugs within the community, and I'm pleased that a large amount of drugs are now off our streets," Commissioner Col Blanch said. In a separate case, police observed a 20-year-old man departing a Perth city hotel holding a duffel bag before travelling about 60km on June 24 to Stake Hill, where police pounced. Officers allegedly found 10kg of meth inside the bag and arrested the was charged with possessing a trafficable quantity with the intent to sell or supply it to another. Detectives also observed a 22-year-old man carrying a backpack leaving a different hotel in Perth's CBD on the same night. When they stopped him to search the bag, nine kilograms of meth, 1.5kg of cocaine, a gun and more than $330,000 in cash were allegedly found. He was charged with three counts of possessing a trafficable quantity with the intent to sell or supply it to another and receiving, possessing, concealing, disposing of or dealing with any money that is the proceeds of an offence. The men are due back before the Perth Magistrates Court over the next week. Mr Blanch said all of the arrests should serve as a warning to anyone considering selling or supplying drugs. "We will find you and we will bring you to justice," he said. Police Minister Reece Whitby also issued the warning to potential criminals to expect to be caught. "Organised Crime has no place in our state and the WA Police Force won't stop hunting down alleged members of criminal networks to ensure illicit drugs and firearms aren't in the hands of dangerous criminals," he said.
