Andreescu defeats Rybakina in straight sets, advances to Italian Open 4th round
Canada's Bianca Andreescu is through to the fourth round of the Italian Open WTA 1000 tennis tournament after posting a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 11 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan on Sunday in Rome.
Andreescu, a 24-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., converted three break points and saved five to win the third-round match in one hour 27 minutes.
The 2019 U.S. Open champion is back on the comeback trail after recently returning from nearly six months off the WTA Tour.
Currently ranked 121st, Andreescu earned her first win against a top-20 opponent since 2023 on Friday with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory against Donna Vekic of Croatia in the second round.
Rybakina hadn't dropped a set in three previous meetings with Andreescu, including a win in the second round of the Madrid Open last month.
Andreescu will play the winner of a match between No. 8 Qinwen Zheng and No. 26 Magdalena Frech in the next round.
Elsewhere on Sunday, No. 24 seed Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., lost her third-round match 6-4, 6-2 to Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

Calgary's Wild FC downs Halifax Tides 3-2 in Northern Super League

Wild (3-2-2) scored three first-half goals before the winless Tides (0-5-1) countered with two late in the second. Calgary extended its undefeated run to four straight games with two wins and two draws in that span. Wild FC defeated the Tides 4-1 in Halifax on April 26 for Calgary's first NSL victory, and a week after the six-team NSL launched with the Vancouver Rise blanking Calgary 1-0. 'It was a similar story to the last time we played Halifax. We put the game to bed early and then we let them get a bit of momentum at the start of the second half, but this one maybe even more so,' said Wild coach Lydia Bedford. 'I give full credit to them. This league is very competitive. They showed that tonight putting two away in the second half.' The Wild's Taegan Stewart scored her first career NSL goal when the 17-year-old Calgarian drilled a right-foot shot from the centre box home in first-half extra time. 'It's been coming for a while. I had a couple of chances over the last couple of matches, but third time is a charm,' Stewart said. 'It was really exciting and now I'm wanting more.' She celebrated her first goal by hopping on the back of forward Christie Gray's back for a run down McMahon Stadium's pitch. Taegan's twin sister and Wild teammate Keelyn attended their high school graduation ceremony in the afternoon before heading to the pitch in the evening. 'It was a long, busy day – a pretty exciting day having graduated high school – but we made it work,' said Keelyn. 'It was even more exciting that we finally got to share the field together, so was a perfect way to end things off for us.' Added Bedford: 'T had her first start in the first Halifax game and for Kee, she has been pushing and pushing, knocking on my door for when those minutes are going to come. I'm just so proud of them both. To be 17 and to be stepping on the pitch as well as they are just shows all the work they have put in.' Jenaya Robertson of Delta, B.C., made it 2-0 for the hosts with a left-footed strike in the 41st minute. Australian defender Ally Green got Calgary's first-half scoring burst underway in the 23rd minute. Wild goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec's bid for a third clean sheet in four games was foiled when Haligonian Saorla Miller and Japanese striker Megumi Nakamura scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively for the Tides. Bukovec and Halifax keeper Erin McLeod, who has appeared in 119 games for the Canadian women's team, each made one save. Bukovec was the busier of the two women with 68 touches to McLeod's 36. Wild FC's next game is against AFC Toronto in Calgary on June 14. The Tides host Ottawa Rapid FC on June 10. Oilers fans showing optimism, enthusiasm ahead of Game 2
With the Edmonton Oilers heading into their second home game of the Stanley Cup final, fans from across North America are elated with the team's performance and the energy of the fan base in the city. Gaudan Roy and Janice Walsh are two of those fans who flew to Edmonton for the Oilers. They came together from Quebec to watch the Oilers' first two home games in person. "We were at the game. I thought it was electrifying. Everybody's emotions were high … I really like being here for the games. The whole city is just boiling with emotion," Roy said. Roy and Walsh said Canada is standing behind the Oilers in their quest for the Cup. "You can feel that people are behind the Oilers, and we want the Cup in Canada this year," said Roy. "I agree," said Walsh. "I think everybody here feels the same way. Whether you are a Habs fan or a Canucks fan. You're here to see Canada win the Cup." Oilers superfan Duncan Byquist said he is happy to see tourists and people from outside of Edmonton coming into the city to enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate the Oilers. "The coolest thing is hearing all the people that are here from out of town," Byquist said. "They're loving it and flying in from all over the place … that's what's really cool." After a nail-biting overtime win in Game 1, fans are revelling in how this rematch is a far cry from the Oilers' early performance in last year's finals. "It's a nice contrast because we were behind 0-3 last year," said "So it was a whole different thing where [fans] were almost reserved like it was over. This year, there's more excitement. We're in a better place." Tickets now on sale for Grey Cup in Winnipeg
CFL fans can now get their hands on tickets for the 112th Grey Cup. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Friday that tickets were on sale as of 10 a.m. for the championship game being held in Winnipeg on Nov. 16 at Princess Auto Stadium. 'This will be more than a game—it's a week-long celebration of Canadian football, culture, and community, and it all starts with securing your seat to the biggest game of the year,' said Wade Miller, the president and CEO of the Bombers, in a news release. With the purchase of the Grey Cup ticket, people will also receive early access to Team Social Passes, which get people into the 2025 Grey Cup Festival Concert Series and the Team Party Rooms. People can buy tickets through Ticketmaster.
