EU's ‘green' fuel mandate costly and not helping environment, IATA says

The International Air Transport Association on Wednesday stepped up criticism of the European Union's sustainable aviation fuel mandate as a costly initiative that is not helping the environment as regional supplies there remain low.
'The idea that you're buying sustainable fuel and then transporting it to use in Europe isn't the right way to do it, because you're clearly increasing the carbon footprint of that fuel as a result of the transportation costs,' IATA's director-general Willie Walsh said at a media roundtable in Singapore.
IATA estimated in June that production of SAF, which is considered a low-carbon replacement for traditional jet fuel, is expected to reach 2 million metric tons, or 0.7% of airlines' fuel consumption, in 2025.
'Mandating the use of a product that isn't available doesn't lead to any environmental benefit,' Walsh said, adding that fuel companies that have an obligation to produce SAF are also increasing the cost of traditional jet fuel.
By IATA's assessment, he said 'the cost that they're charging is way in excess of the actual cost of the limited supplies of sustainable fuel.'
'The EU in effect has facilitated monopoly suppliers to increase prices with no environmental benefit,' said Walsh, adding that the region needs to re-evaluate its SAF targets.
Under the ReFuelEU Aviation requirement, airlines need to have a 6% SAF blend in their jet fuel usage by 2030. The EU is offering some subsidies for SAF purchases by airlines, Reuters reported in June.
On the supply front, at least five SAF projects in Asia, outside of China, have started up or are earmarked to start production this year, targeting exports regionally and to Europe. Singapore is among key exporters of the green fuel to the EU. Walsh also questioned the use of palm oil as a means to produce sustainable fuel.
'I think that you could argue there is sustainable palm oil and there is palm oil that wouldn't be considered sustainable, and I think in some parts of the world there it's too black and white,' Walsh said.
We need to have a much more 'nuanced approach' to the usage of palm oil as a feedstock and 'much more detailed assessment of the sustainability of the feedstock', he added.

"Caution Against Double Standards": India On NATO's Russia Trade Warning

The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday responded to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) chief Mark Rutte's remarks on possible sanctions over India's trade with Russia, cautioning against "double standards". MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, at the weekly media briefing in Delhi, said, "We have seen reports on the subject and are closely following the developments. Let me reiterate that securing the energy needs of our people is understandably an overriding priority for us." Mr Jaiswal warned of double standards regarding the matter and said, "In this endeavour, we are guided by what is on offer in the markets and by prevailing global circumstances. We would particularly caution against any double standards on the matter." Mr Rutte had warned on Wednesday that countries such as Brazil, China and India could be hit very hard by secondary sanctions if they continued to do business with Russia. He made the comment while meeting with senators in the US Congress. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had announced new weapons for Ukraine and had threatened to slap 100 per cent tariffs on any country buying Russian exports, unless there is a peace deal in 50 days. "My encouragement to these three countries, particularly is, if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the president of Brazil, you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard," Rutte told reporters. "So please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way," Rutte added. However, European and NATO members continue to be large buyers if Russian energy exports. According to to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, EU has been the largest buyer of Russian liquified natural gas and pipeline gas since 2022 and Turkey, a NATO member, has been the largest buyer of Russian oil products. The EU has proposed to phase out Russian oil and natural gas imports by 2027 and January 2028, respectively. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also said on Thursday that India could meet its oil requirements through "alternative sources" if the Russian supplies were hit by secondary sanctions. "I'm not worried at all. If something happens, we'll deal with it. India has diversified the sources of supply and we have gone, I think, from about 27 countries that we used to buy from to about 40 countries now," Mr Puri said, per Reuters.

Reconomy launches 5-year roadmap for textile EPR compliance

Reconomy has published a new global strategy paper titled 'Textile EPR Strategy 2030', outlining a comprehensive five-year roadmap for navigating the evolving global landscape of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles. The roadmap provides an overview of anticipated policy timelines and evolving requirements, while detailing how businesses can prepare for upcoming changes and leverage its strategic initiatives across Europe and worldwide. The new EPR legislation is driving a structural shift by making producers responsible for end-of-life management, including collection, reuse, recycling, and disposal—accelerating the move towards circular business models and sustainable production patterns. Rather than viewing this as a compliance burden, the strategy framed the transition as an opportunity for innovation and competitive advantage. By supporting stakeholders in aligning regulatory obligations with business goals, it aims to foster more resilient and future-ready operations that respond to growing demands from consumers, retailers, and policymakers. Reconomy's Textile EPR Strategy 2030 outlines a five-year roadmap to help businesses navigate evolving textile regulations. It highlighted upcoming policy timelines, eco-modulation, Digital Product Passports, and the shift towards circular models. The strategy focuses on operational readiness, cross-sector partnerships, and advanced data use. Key themes in the strategy included eco-modulation, Digital Product Passports, and the increasing need for reliable data and supply chain transparency. In the short term, during the 'pre-EPR' phase, the focus is on helping clients assess regulatory impact, prepare operationally, build strong partnerships across the textile ecosystem—including sorters and recyclers—and invest in technologies to manage data and material flows efficiently. Looking ahead, as EPR legislation becomes established across all EU member states and other global markets, the plan includes ongoing support for multi-jurisdictional compliance, especially in regions such as North America. It also emphasises the use of product-level data to drive design innovation and accelerate the adoption of circular business models. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (SG)
