ChatGPT's viral Studio Ghibli-style images: 'An insult to life itself'
You may have noticed this week that everything from historic photos, classic film scenes, internet memes and recent political moments have been reimagined online as Studio Ghibli-style portraits.
The trend quickly went viral, all thanks to ChatGPT and the OpenAI chatbot's latest update, which launched on Tuesday (25 March).
The latest addition to the GPT-4o has meant users can replicate the distinct artistic style of animation studio co-creator and legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away).
"Today is a great internet day," one user declared as he shared popular memes in the Ghibli format.
That's all well and good, but the trend has also highlighted ethical concerns about artificial intelligence tools trained on copyrighted creative works and what that means for the livelihoods of human artists.
Not that that's a concern for ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which has largely encouraged the 'Ghiblification' experiments. Its CEO Sam Altman even changed his profile on social media platform X into a Ghibli-style portrait.
What started as another example of how OpenAI doesn't care about the work of artists went straight to the White House, with Donald Trump's administration exploitating the trend in the most insulting and tone-deaf of ways.
Indeed, Trump's administration jumped onto the trend bandwagon, using the White House's official X account to post a Ghibli-style image of a weeping woman from the Dominican Republic recently arrested by US immigration agents.
Sickening.
Miyazaki, 84, known for his hand-drawn approach and whimsical storytelling, has expressed skepticism about AI's role in animation. His previous comments on AI animation have resurfaced and also gone viral, with the animator saying he was 'utterly disgusted' by an AI demo.
The video is from 2016. The person demonstrating the animation, which showed a writhing body dragging itself by its head, explained that AI could 'present us grotesque movements that we humans can't imagine.'
That prompted Miyazaki to tell a story.
'Every morning, not in recent days, I see my friend who has a disability,' Miyazaki said. 'It's so hard for him just to do a high five; his arm with stiff muscle can't reach out to my hand. Now, thinking of him, I can't watch this stuff and find it interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is.'
He said he would 'never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.'
'I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself,' he added.
The clip ends with a voiceover from Miyazaki saying: 'I feel like we are nearing the end of times. We humans are losing faith in ourselves.'
Check it out:
Josh Weigensberg, a partner at the law firm Pryor Cashman, said that one question the Ghibli-style AI art raises is whether the AI model was trained on Miyazaki or Studio Ghibli's work. That in turn 'raises the question of, 'Well, do they have a license or permission to do that training or not?'' he said.
Weigensberg added that if a work was licensed for training, it might make sense for a company to permit this type of use. But if this type of use is happening without consent and compensation, he said, it could be 'problematic.'
Again, 'problematic' doesn't phase Sam Altman.
Even if ChatGPT's increasingly popular new image generation tool has led to OpenAI putting in place "temporary" limits on how many are generated, Altman has stated that the unspecified cap 'hopefully' won't be in place for very long.
"It's super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT, but our GPUs are melting," said Altman.
Let them melt. And thankfully, some X users are speaking out:
Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by directors Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. It has produced some of the most acclaimed animated films of all time, including My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), and Spirited Away (2004), which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Their most recent film was 2023's The Boy And The Heron - which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar last year.

11 Unforgettable Looks at the BET Awards
The BET Awards, held on Monday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, honored achievements across cultural mediums: filmmaking, music, television. The ceremony — which featured appearances by superstars like Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Kendrick Lamar — and the red carpet before it also put the spotlight on style. Overall, the fashion was vibrant and joyful: On the carpet, there were saturated colors and bold prints that, along with a large floral installation, set a lively mood. Several surprising accessories — big hats, video game consoles, baby bumps — made the spectacle even more fun to look at. Of all the attire on display, these 11 looks were among the most memorable, for myriad reasons. Law Roach: Most Bowler! The stylist's pronounced headgear evoked other oversize styles that caused stirs on red carpets past, like the big hats worn by Zendaya, one of Mr. Roach's clients, and Pharrell Williams. Flau'jae Johnson: Most Slam Dunk! Seeing the college basketball star and rapper in her glamorous burgundy gown approximated the pleasure of taking the first sip of a fine wine. Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus: Most Royal Couple! The married rapper and entrepreneur would have probably stood out in any matching attire, but the royal blue palette of their ensembles gave them a regal presence. Doechii: Most Y2K! Slim rectangular glasses, stacks of chunky bangles and a Miu Miu bandanna top were elements of the rapper and singer's ensemble that harked back to early 2000s style. Wale: Most Prepared! A Nintendo Switch peeking out of the pocket of the rapper's Prada jacket suggested he would not lack for entertainment should the awards ceremony drag on. KJ Smith: Most Revealing! The pregnant actress not only showed off her baby bump in a chartreuse gown with stomach cutouts, but also revealed the child's gender (it's a girl!) in an interview on the carpet. GloRilla: Most Skunk Stripe! This year, dark hair with pale streaks has made its way to the White House, the big screen, the small screen and now, thanks to the rapper, the awards season circuit. Vic Mensa: Most Nude Illusion! In a shirt that resembled a toned and tattooed bare chest, the rapper undoubtedly made many people look (and a few stare). Kai Cenat: Most Debonair! The Twitch streamer looked the part of an old-Hollywood star dressed up in a classic double breasted tuxedo replete with bow tie and pocket square. Da Brat: Most 'Derelicte'! The rapper's tattered attire, which was bleached and pre-distressed, brought to mind a certain runway collection from the film 'Zoolander.'

Which Cast Members Are Not Returning for ‘And Just Like That' Season 3? Who's Not Coming Back
And Just Like That... returns for season 3 minus several key cast members who have been with the show since the first episode. Life & Style reveals which costars aren't coming back and the reasons behind their departures. Sara Ramirez is not coming back to the show as nonbinary comedian and podcaster Che Diaz, even though they have been with the show since season 1. Similarly, another two-season regular, Karen Pittman, won't be back to reprise her role of law professor Nya Wallace. The Grey's Anatomy alum and showrunner Michael Patrick King "felt that that character had run its course," AJLT star and Sex and the City alum Cynthia Nixon told Variety in May 2024. Cynthia's Miranda Hobbes fell for Che in season 1, causing her to split from husband Steve Brady, played by David Eigenberg. Che and Miranda's romance blossomed throughout the season as Miranda explored her sexuality. Season 2 saw Che suffer a major career downturn after their comedy pilot didn't get picked up. They went back to working in a veterinarian's office and the podcast they cohosted with Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw was cancelled after the studio was shut down. Che's romance with Miranda also came to an end, after the intensity of being involved so deeply in each other's lives took a toll. That left Sara without much to do on the show, as their character's ties to both Carrie and Miranda were no longer there going into the third season. 'One of the things that it meant was that Miranda was single again, and that the tensions between Miranda and Che, and also Miranda and Steve, had been quelled and quieted," Cynthia told E! News on May 28, 2025, about her character finally being free of any partner heading into season 3 of AJLT. "Just speaking for Miranda, it meant that she was setting out on this new dating world, having decided she wanted to date women and nonbinary people, but not really quite knowing how to go about that," the New York native added. Karen's busy schedule didn't have room for her to return as Miranda's former law professor and close pal, as she was shooting Apple TV+'s The Morning Show season 4 and the Netflix's series Forever during AJLT's season 3 production. 'It has been a joy to have Karen Pittman play the smart and stunning Professor Nya Wallace on the first two seasons of And Just Like That. As we have thoroughly enjoyed working with this dynamic actress, so too have others," a spokesperson for HBO told multiple outlets on March 22, 2024. They noted that 'it has become apparent that filming three shows at once isn't possible.' 'Due to the production realities, we are disappointed to announce that scheduling conflicts will not allow us to continue with this character as part of season 3 of And Just Like That. Karen and Nya will be missed, and her Max family and fans will all be cheering her on in her other endeavors," the streaming service added. The character of Nya had been left at somewhat of a dead end after season 2. Miranda had long left her brief return to college in the professor's classes to take a job as a human rights lawyer, so the pair only had social interactions. Nya's marriage broke down after she and her husband were unable to come to a decision about children, and season 2 saw the character exploring dating life while somewhat adrift from the rest of the AJLT cast. Kim Cattrall's cameo in the AJLT season 2 finale was a one and done. She thrilled Sex and the City fans by reprising Samantha Jones one last time in the episode that aired on August 24, 2023. Samantha called Sarah Jessica's Carrie Bradshaw to let her know her flight from London was running late and she was going to miss the former sex columnist's goodbye dinner at her longtime New York City apartment. The characters had a brief but pleasant chat after having several text exchanges during season 1 of the SATC revival. Kim shot her scene separately and was never face to face with SJP or other cast members. The Glamorous star had gone on the record numerous times that she was done playing Samantha for good when SJP tried to get a third SATC movie off the ground in 2017. The How I Met Your Father star said she wasn't asked back by AJLT executive producer and star Sarah to take part in the reboot, which the Hocus Pocus star confirmed.

How Did Big Die in ‘And Just Like That'? Chris Noth's Character's Death Explained
The premiere episode of And Just Like That saw Carrie Bradshaw's husband, John "Mr. Big" Preston, get killed off, ending the chance of their love story getting further explored. Life & Style takes a closer look at what happened to Chris Noth's character. After finishing an intense Peloton ride at home, Big suffered a heart attack and collapsed in the shower. Carrie returned home from attending Charlotte's daughter's piano recital to find him dying and he passed away in her arms. "And just like that … Big died," Sarah Jessica Parker — who plays Carrie — said in a heartbreaking voiceover in the finale scene. The character of Big had heart issues dating back to Sex and the City, where he underwent an angioplasty in a 2003 episode due to an artery blockage. The pall of Carrie becoming a widow was explored throughout the first season of And Just Like That... In addition to the funeral in episode 2, Carrie went about downsizing her life. She moved out of the luxury apartment they shared and into a spacious new place overlooking the Hudson River. After feeling his ghostly presence looking over her, the author eventually moved back into her Upper East Side bachelorette pad. Carrie explored whether or not Big cheated on her with his ex-wife, Natasha, after discovering he left her $1,000,000 in his will. She came face to face with her now-married mom love rival, only to find out Big did it out of guilt from the pain he caused Natasha and that she didn't want the money. The former sex columnist also clashed with Big's brother, who wanted his sibling's ashes to be buried in a plot with other members of his family. Eventually, Carrie traveled to Paris and scattered Big's ashes off the Pont des Arts bridge, which was fitting as that was where he found her in the Sex and the City series finale to tell her she was "The One" after so many years of their on-again, off-again romance. "Big dying was really, really hard to do both professionally and personally," SJP told E! News on May 27, 2025, ahead of And Just Like That's season 3 premiere. "That's not just a thread. It's one of the main arteries that you would struggle to do without," she continued. "It was really sad to say goodbye to that. It's not like I needed it for my own health or wellbeing, but that was a hugely wonderful story to tell for a lot of years." "Dying was the origin story. Nobody wanted to come back if [the show] was not going to be different," writer-director-showrunner Michael Patrick King told Vanity Fair in December 2021. "When I told Chris that Mr. Big dies in the first episode, he definitely knew it wasn't [going to be the] same. And we had to talk about it. He really wanted to talk about why he's dying and what it does for this series. The more we talked about it, the more he understood that it was for Carrie — and Carrie's storyline is it's better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all," Michael explained. He elaborated that Chris returning so he could be killed off was central to the Sex and the City revival, where he played Carrie's love interest starting in season 1 of the HBO series that aired from 1998 through 2004. "I couldn't have done the show without him. I wouldn't have done the show without him. I wouldn't have done the show if Mr. Big didn't die in the last five minutes [of episode 1]. And I also wouldn't have the show if he wasn't so charismatic and charming and alive in the first 40," Michael shared.
