Messi Kerala visit row escalates as govt, Argentine FA trade blame; Opposition alleges waste of Rs 130 crore

KOCHI: The Messi-in-Kerala dream has spiralled into a full-blown slugfest, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the state government trading blame over the collapse of the plan. On Saturday, reports claimed AFA official Leandro Peterson had accused the Kerala government of breaching the contract, a charge dismissed by Sports Minister V Abdurahiman as 'baseless', insisting that if the team skipped the October visit, it would be the AFA in breach. The fresh twist has emboldened the Opposition Congress to go on the offensive, demanding that the government explain how a high-profile project, for which sponsors say they paid Rs 130 crore and the state spent lakhs on foreign trips, has spiralled into confusion, contract disputes and allegations of public money being wasted. Abdurahiman had dampened football lovers' hopes earlier this week, saying the visit by the Argentina team was 'unlikely' to happen as planned. As per some media reports, Leandro denied his side had breached the contract by postponing the tour to next year and instead pinned the blame on the Kerala government, though without detailing the alleged violations. The minister dismissed the reports and reiterated that Kerala was not interested in hosting the team next year. Govt should come clean, says Cong 'If Argentina fail to visit Kerala in October, we will see it as a breach of contract and a case of cheating. We are actively trying to bring the team here as per the contract. When a country signs the contract and accepts the money in this, what else do we have to say,' he told reporters in Malappuram.

Shekhar Kapur Says He Was Fired By Dharmendra From Bobby Deol's Debut Barsaat: 'Didn't Walk Out'

Last Updated: Shekhar Kapur has revealed he was fired from Bobby Deol's debut Barsaat, ending years of speculation about the 90s Bollywood shake-up. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has set the record straight on one of Bollywood's longest-whispered rumours – that he walked away from Bobby Deol's debut film Barsaat. The director says the truth is not this. 'I never walked out, I have been thrown out of films," Kapur told Filmfare. 'Barsaat was an idea that was being developed and I think I wasn't quite understanding Dharam ji's ideas. Then Sunny was in London and he called the next guy who took over, Rajkumar Santoshi. So I talked to Raj ji and told him that since you have done films before with all of them, can you talk to Dharam ji? And he said, 'Haan main sambhal leta hoon.' And the next day I found out, he was directing it. That's it. That's all that happened. People say I walked out of it, but let me be honest, I didn't walk out of it. Mind you, I immediately went and made Bandit Queen." In the 1990s, Bobby's launch was treated like the arrival of a future superstar. The younger son of Dharmendra, he was cast opposite Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. Barsaat was initially Kapur's project, fresh off his hits Mr India and Masoom. But Bobby says the switch happened after just under a month of shooting. Speaking at the Jagran Film Festival in 2023, he recalled, 'I started shooting for the film very early and Shekhar Kapur was the director. We shot for the film for 27 days. He then got an offer from Hollywood to make Bandit Queen. Shekhar said, 'I will do Bandit Queen and come back to do Barsaat.' But my father told him that he didn't want to delay it. He told Shekhar, 'You go do your film, I will find somebody else.' And I think Rajkumar Santoshi was waiting to direct my film. I got lucky with him." Even on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Bobby poked fun at the shake-up, joking, 'Maybe that's why Shekhar ran away. Shekhar Kapur. He was scared. But then Raj directed the film. But I never thought I was under pressure." Barsaat follows Badal (Bobby Deol), a carefree young man from a small town who moves to the city for college, where he meets and falls in love with Tina (Twinkle Khanna), the spirited daughter of a wealthy and overprotective father. As their romance blossoms, Badal finds himself clashing with Tina's family, particularly her father, who disapproves of their relationship. The story weaves together themes of love, loyalty, and standing up for one's beliefs, with action-packed confrontations and emotional drama driving Badal's fight to win over Tina's heart. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy on Saturday slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the latter's meeting with his US counterpart and said that he was 'trying to sell the cessation of killings'. Zelensky stated that Ukraine and its allies share a common understanding on the necessity of a ceasefire and putting an end to the violence. 'Only one actor stands against this, Putin. His only card is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of killings at the highest possible price," he stated.
