Tamil Nadu forest department to focus on tribal skill development
The Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project, an initiative undertaken by the forest department in collaboration with JICA, aims to strengthen biodiversity and promote the planting of trees on private lands. District Forest Officer, K Rajangam, said, "Since 2024, we have been conducting special training for students. We have enrolled 400 students from 22 tribal areas and are providing abacus classes, Montessori education and other hands-on training. Further, in Vathalmalai, we have set up special TNPSC courses after 12 tribal students expressed interest in pursuing competitive exams."
A forest staff member said, "Apart from education, we are also providing training as a means to improve livelihood. So far, 25 men have been given driving classes, and after obtaining their licences, they are engaged in a special programme. However, our primary focus is on women's empowerment, and so far, 25 women have completed 45 days of training and are now engaged in advanced embroidery courses. Further, upon completion of their courses, we would also aid them in marketing their products and improving their livelihood."
On Thursday, the Tribal Welfare Office began a two-day special training camp to educate the Forest Rights Committee members and tribal residents on the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Under this programme, a total of 1,044 tribal residents from Dharmapuri and Harur revenue divisions have been selected.

Worker dies, 3 injured in work site cave-in: Probe ordered, PMC draws up safety guidelines
A day after a worker died and three others were injured after debris fell on them while carrying out drainage work near Nanded city township, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) swung into action to prepare safety guidelines. 'We visited the site on Tuesday and ordered a detailed inquiry,' said additional municipal commissioner Prithviraj B P, who along with the municipal commissioner visited the site. 'We have decided three things for now, which include safety guidelines at project sites. Training will be given to workers to ensure there is no repeat of such incidents,' he said. Work at the accident site has been stopped for now, he said. 'A team from Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) will visit the site and till then work at the site will not be restarted. However, work on the project at other sites will continue after ensuring safety guidelines are followed,' he added. 'We will ensure the main contractor provides compensation to the workers who died and were injured,' he said. The River Improvement Project, also known as JICA project, involves construction of 11 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and laying drainage pipelines to ensure no untreated sewage is released in Mula and Mutha river. The project implementation has been delayed for long and failed to meets its March 2025 deadline. The project got delayed due to technical issues but finally it is on track. The project cost has increased from Rs 990 crore to Rs 1,173 crore and an additional Rs 250 crore for its operation and maintenance for the next 15 years. Pune: One dead, three injured as debris falls on labourers near Nanded City township
One worker died and three were injured on Monday after debris fell on them as they undertook Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) related drainage work in a trench near Nanded City township. After receiving information, teams of the Pune Fire Brigade and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) rushed to the spot around 6 pm. Firemen started the rescue operation immediately. 'The workers were buried under the mud in a trench about 20 feet deep a trench. We rescued three workers safely and they were taken to a hospital for treatment,' said fire officer Prashant Gaikar. 'Three people have been shifted to Nanded multi-specialty hospital. A fourth person unfortunately died, a doctor has confirmed,' said additional municipal commissioner Prithviraj B P. The rescue operation went on for over two hours. Prithviraj B P said the work was related to on ongoing project being implemented through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funds. 'We will investigate the incident,' he said. He added that the JICA project follows strict safety standards, so the PMC will find out the exact cause of the incident.
