Potential first-round pick Joan Beringer declares for 2025 NBA draft
French center Joan Beringer told ESPN on Friday that he is declaring for the 2025 NBA draft after playing this season in the Adriatic League in Slovenia.
Beringer is averaging 4.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks on 61% shooting from the field in 51 games with Cedevita Olimpija. He has scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 12 points and five rebounds on March 4.
The 6-foot-11 forward, who boasts a reported 7-foot, 5-inch wingspan, is projected to be a first-round pick, given his versatility, athleticism and rim protection. He is considered raw offensively, but has the tools to develop into a productive player at the next level.
Beringer has also represented France internationally at the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket. He averaged 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and one assist on 70.5% shooting from the field in seven games, helping France to a fifth-place finish in Finland.
The 18-year-old is among a talented group of international prospects, joining the likes of Noa Essengue, Kasparas Jakučionis, Khaman Maluach, Ben Saraf and Nolan Traoré, among others. They are all considered first-round picks, with some expected to go in the lottery.
Beringer will be a late arrival to the United States for the predraft process, with his team on track to qualify for the ABA League playoffs next month. He will likely have the opportunity to participate in a draft combine in June for prospects still playing with their international teams.
The 2025 NBA draft will occur June 25-26 in New York City.

Sports Seriously The U.S. men's national team finishes its Gold Cup preparations with a Tuesday friendly against Switzerland at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn. The USMNT will be hoping to take a step forward after a merely adequate performance on Saturday ended with a 2-1 loss to Turkey. While the U.S. controlled much of the game in possession, poor work on the ball inside its own penalty area gifted the Turks both goals, throwing away a first-minute strike from Jack McGlynn that gave the hosts a lead. The USMNT news cycle moved rapidly between matches, providing a mixed bag for the team. In bad news, midfield linchpin Tyler Adams was ruled out with a foot injury, with head coach Mauricio Pochettino saying he hopes the knock will not rule the Bournemouth man out for the Gold Cup. On the plus side, goalkeeper Matt Turner — who will start as part of a heavily rotated 11 for this friendly — has been linked to a €8 million move from Nottingham Forest to French side Lyon. Follow along with Pro Soccer Wire for live updates, highlights, lineups, and analysis for Tuesday's game between the USMNT and Switzerland. The USMNT is without Tyler Adams, a player whose skill set and personality are both arguably indispensable for a team that has, for lack of a better way to put it, lacked a little bit of dawg out there. The Bournemouth midfielder is out with what Mauricio Pochettino called "a small issue in his foot" in a Monday press conference. For more on Adams' status, read Pro Soccer Wire's reporting on the news. The USMNT, in its new "Heartbeat" kits for the second time, kicks off at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tenn. We're expecting a 4-2-3-1 out of Mauricio Pochettino, who has made nine changes to the starting 11 that lost to Turkey last week. Johnny Cardoso (who was hauled off after a rocky first half in that game) and Max Arfsten are the only holdovers. A whopping five players in this group came up through the Philadelphia Union academy. That includes Brenden and Paxten Aaronson, who will start alongside one another with the USMNT for the first time. Per U.S. Soccer, they become the fourth set of brothers to do so, and the first since George and Louis Nanchoff both started a Feb. 11, 1979 game against the Soviet Union. Mavericks believe Jason Kidd will return as head coach next season, not fill Knicks vacancy: Sources

Amid widespread speculation that Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd could force his way out to join the New York Knicks, there are strong signs that the 52-year-old Hall of Famer will stay put. As The Athletic reported, the Knicks have serious interest in hiring Kidd — who has two seasons left on his contract — after they shockingly fired Tom Thibodeau last week. Yet according to team and league sources, the Mavericks continue to privately insist to key stakeholders that Kidd won't be going anywhere. According to a team source, the Knicks had yet to request permission to speak with Kidd as of Tuesday afternoon. Advertisement The widely held belief is that Kidd, ultimately, is hoping to parlay the Knicks' interest into a lucrative contract extension. It remains to be seen how Kidd might respond if he doesn't get the desired extension, and there is historical precedent here when it comes to Kidd spurning the Mavericks for the Knicks. At the end of his decorated 19-year playing career — in the summer of 2012 — Kidd was expected to re-sign with the Mavericks in free agency. But he changed course abruptly, signing a multiyear deal to play alongside Carmelo Anthony in New York. As of now, the Mavericks don't believe that Kidd will leave them for the Knicks again. Kidd has been present at the Mavericks' practice facility this past week as they've held workouts and has functioned in a business-as-usual capacity. What's more, the negotiations with former Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns head coach Jay Triano for a lead assistant-coaching position with the Mavericks have been revealing when it comes to Kidd. According to a league source, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison made it clear to Triano during the process that Kidd would remain the head coach. Triano, the league source said, agreed to terms on the assistant position on Tuesday. NBA reporter Jake Fischer was first to report on the Mavericks' interest in Triano. Triano has spent the past three years as a Sacramento Kings assistant. In September, he was promoted to associate head coach. The Kings fired his boss Mike Brown in December and tapped Doug Christie for their head-coaching position. The Knicks are the only NBA team with a head-coaching vacancy right now. They fired Thibodeau after he led them to the playoffs in four of the five years he was in charge. New York made the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years this past spring, but it still decided to part ways with Thibodeau. Advertisement Kidd, who was one of the candidates the Knicks interviewed in their 2020 hiring cycle, has a strong relationship with New York's star point guard in Jalen Brunson. Kidd coached Brunson for one season with the Mavericks in 2021-22. Brunson's strong performance in the 2022 playoffs helped him earn a four-year, $104 million deal with the Knicks. The Mavericks have downplayed the possibility of a Kidd-Brunson reunion this week. The belief internally in Dallas is that Kidd will be the team's coach next season.

(AP Photo/Brandon Dill, File) MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Zach Edey could miss the start of the 2025-26 season after the Memphis Grizzlies rookie center had surgery Tuesday on his left ankle. Edey needed the procedure to repair and restabilize his ankle after spraining it again during offseason training last week. The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-3 Canadian would be evaluated again in four months, which is less than two weeks before the 2025-26 season opens Oct. 21. Advertisement The two-time national player of the year at Purdue missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-leading 8.3 rebounds. He was voted to the All-Rookie first team. ___ AP NBA:
