Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) Misses Q2 Sales Targets
Payroll and human resources software provider, Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) missed Wall Street's revenue expectations in Q2 CY2025, but sales rose 10.2% year on year to $1.43 billion. Its GAAP profit of $0.82 per share decreased from $1.05 in the same quarter last year.
Is now the time to buy Paychex? Find out in our full research report.
Revenue: $1.43 billion vs analyst estimates of $1.44 billion (10.2% year-on-year growth, 1.1% miss)
Operating Margin: 30.2%, down from 37.2% in the same quarter last year
Free Cash Flow Margin: 23.4%, down from 44.2% in the previous quarter
Market Capitalization: $54.84 billion
One of the oldest service providers in the industry, Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) offers its customers payroll and HR software solutions.
Examining a company's long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Even a bad business can shine for one or two quarters, but a top-tier one grows for years. Over the last three years, Paychex grew its sales at a weak 6.5% compounded annual growth rate. This wasn't a great result compared to the rest of the software sector, but there are still things to like about Paychex.
This quarter, Paychex's revenue grew by 10.2% year on year to $1.43 billion but fell short of Wall Street's estimates.
Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 18.7% over the next 12 months, an acceleration versus the last three years. This projection is admirable and indicates its newer products and services will catalyze better top-line performance.
Unless you've been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. While Nvidia and AMD are trading close to all-time highs, we prefer a lesser-known (but still profitable) stock benefiting from the rise of AI. Click here to access our free report one of our favorites growth stories.
Free cash flow isn't a prominently featured metric in company financials and earnings releases, but we think it's telling because it accounts for all operating and capital expenses, making it tough to manipulate. Cash is king.
Paychex has shown terrific cash profitability, enabling it to reinvest, return capital to investors, and stay ahead of the competition while maintaining an ample cushion. The company's free cash flow margin was among the best in the software sector, averaging an eye-popping 31.6% over the last year.
Paychex's free cash flow clocked in at $333.5 million in Q2, equivalent to a 23.4% margin. This result was good as its margin was 9.4 percentage points higher than in the same quarter last year, but we note it was lower than its one-year cash profitability. Nevertheless, we wouldn't read too much into a single quarter because investment needs can be seasonal, leading to short-term swings. Long-term trends are more important.
Over the next year, analysts predict Paychex's cash conversion will improve. Their consensus estimates imply its free cash flow margin of 31.6% for the last 12 months will increase to 33.8%, it options for capital deployment (investments, share buybacks, etc.).
We struggled to find many positives in these results. Revenue missed, and operating margin fell pretty significantly year-on-year. Overall, this was a weaker quarter. The stock traded down 2% to $149.25 immediately after reporting.
Paychex underperformed this quarter, but does that create an opportunity to invest right now? The latest quarter does matter, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation, when deciding if the stock is a buy. We cover that in our actionable full research report which you can read here, it's free.

Buy stocks, sell bonds: How billionaire investor Bill Gross says investors should play an unpredictable market
Bond King Bill Gross says he's not very bullish on Treasurys. Gross is more optimistic about stocks, eyeing a "little bull market." He thinks the 10-year Treasury yield will struggle to fall much further from current levels. The "Bond King" shared his take on both markets this week in a post on X, predicting a "little bull market" for stocks and a "little bear market" for bonds. In his view, the 10-year Treasury yield isn't likely to dip below 4.25% soon, highlighting inflationary trends and deficit concerns. The yield on Tuesday was up slightly by about one basis point to 4.31%. Gross sees more strength in the equity markets and maintains that stocks are likely to continue rising. He cites support from the tech sector, specifically artificial intelligence companies, as a likely growth driver. Tech stocks are enjoying continued momentum, with the Nasdaq 100 index closing at a record high on Tuesday as markets cheered the Israel-Iran ceasfire. Major chip companies with high AI exposure, such as Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom, have all trended upward despite the high uncertainty generated by geopolitics in recent weeks. Gross's thesis is for AI to support economic growth of 1%-2%. Regarding bonds, he said "deficits/ensuing supply of bonds/and a weak dollar should keep CPI from falling below 2.5% and the 10 year from falling below 4.25%." As Treasurys are a lending benchmark for many consumer products, Gross's predictions for yields to remain elevated could complicate plans for everyday Americans. If yields remain stubbornly high, homebuyers looking for lower mortgage rates could be disappointed.

Why a billionaire investor thinks bitcoin's total market value could more than double to $5 trillion
The total value of all bitcoins could more than double, according to one billionaire investor who says he wishes he had bought the crypto sooner. Philippe Laffont, the founder of hedge fund Coatue Management, said he added bitcoin to his firm's Fantastic 40 list, a collection of investments it sees as major winners through 2030. That's partly because Laffont believes the total market cap of the world's biggest crypto could rise to as much as $5 trillion one day. That implies bitcoin's total value rising 134% from a market cap of around $2.1 trillion on Wednesday. "I have not gotten involved in bitcoin. I wake up every day at 3 in the morning and I'm like, 'why am I such an idiot? What have I been waiting for, not being involved in it?' And it just goes up and up," Laffont told CNBC on Wednesday. Bitcoin's price has been volatile this year amid tariff-related volatility and a mix of geopolitical and economic concerns. The crypto has rallied to $107,000 in recent days, bringing its price up 14% year-to-date. It hit an all-time high above $111,000 in May. Laffont, who said he initially brushed off bitcoin as an attractive investment, added that there were a few reasons why he's warming up to the cryptocurrency and sees the value soaring. For one, bitcoin's current valuation relative to the rest of the world seems too low, according to Laffont. The net worth of all world assets hovers around $500 trillion, Laffont said. That means bitcoin represents around 0.5% of the world's total assets, but Laffont thinks it's reasonable for bitcoin to represent 1%-2% of the total. Global stocks, by comparison, make up around $120 trillion of the world's assets, while gold makes up around $20 trillion, he added. Second, bitcoin's volatility appears to be declining relative to stocks. Bitcoin dropped 11% in the days after President Donald Trump announced his sweeping array of tariffs. That's a slightly less severe decline when compared to the Nasdaq 100, which dropped 12% from April 2 to its low on April 8. "I always thought, bitcoin's amazing, but it's double or triple the volatility of the Nasdaq," Laffont said. "It seems its volatility as an asset class is coming down." Third, bitcoin could benefit from concerns around de-dollarization and the end of US exceptionalism. Global investors have shown some signs that they're less willing to park their wealth in US assets after this year's tariff-fueled sell-off. More than half of global investors surveyed by Bank of America in June said they believed international equities would be the best-performing asset over the next five years, compared to just 23% of investors who said they believed US equities would be the top performer. The US Dollar Index, which measures the dollar against a basket of foreign currencies, has also declined 10% year-to-date. Laffont said he was now considering purchasing bitcoin. "Do I own it now? Do I own it tomorrow or in a few days? But every day, I do think, 'Why do I not own it?'" Laffont said. "Sometimes you have to change your mind and you have to say, well, I made a mistake," he added.

Mizuho Reaffirms Buy Rating on Evergy Amid Favorable Kansas Regulatory Outlook
Evergy, Inc. (NASDAQ:EVRG) ranks among the top stocks for an early retirement portfolio. On June 10, Mizuho Securities reiterated its Outperform rating and $70 price target for Evergy, Inc. (NASDAQ:EVRG), maintaining its optimistic outlook. The backing follows recent events in a rate case involving Evergy subsidiary Kansas Central. The testimony of the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) Staff, which suggested a revenue requirement of roughly 58% of Kansas Central's sought amount, has been positively viewed by Mizuho analysts. Based on a 9.70% return on equity, the KCC Staff's proposal calls for about $114 million in revenue, which falls short of Kansas Central's request for a 10.50% ROE. Furthermore, the rate base of $6.78 billion is somewhat higher than the company's $6.73 billion proposal. These suggestions, according to Mizuho's analysts, are indicative of favorable regulatory changes in Kansas, which may be encouraging for Evergy. Evergy, Inc. (NASDAQ:EVRG), formed in 2018 from the merger of Great Plains Energy and Westar Energy, provides 16,000 megawatts of generating capacity across more than 40 power plants, serving 1.7 million customers in Kansas and Missouri. While we acknowledge the potential of EVRG as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
