
India's mother tongue teaching spells reading success
Sitting together on the classroom floor in Kalyanpur in northwest India, a dozen children aged five and six are trying to identify Hindi words beginning with the "p" sound.
After a spontaneous "papa", the children unanimously agree on "papaya" — spelt out at the top of their lungs by the entire class.
But for these children, born into an Indigenous tribe in Rajasthan state, learning to read in a language neither they nor their parents speak is a challenge.
To break this pattern, authorities launched a programme in two Rajasthan districts to teach students to read in their mother tongue.
Months after the experiment began, there is progress.
"I used Hindi language with the children, but I could see that they were not responding well," said their teacher, Jashoda Khokariya.
"They were scared, and were not able to answer my questions," she added.
"Now, it's a miracle -- there is not a single child who is not able to respond."
Indian school enrolment rates are high -- but performance is much lower.
One key problem in the world's most populous country, where 1.4 billion people speak a mosaic of over a hundred languages, is that primary school teaching is often in a language the children do not understand.
'Multilingual society'
At the age of eight, only 39 percent of Indian students reach the required reading level.
At 15, the situation is even worse. The rate drops to 10 percent.
Poverty, early marriage and poor teacher training are all to blame -- but language plays a part too.
"We have a multilingual society; this needs to be accounted for when children come to school," said Saadhna Panday, from the UN children's agency (UNICEF).
"Several studies have demonstrated that children learn best in the early years in their mother tongue."
But this is rarely the case.
In many Indian states, students are taught in English and Hindi, of which families may have little knowledge.
Since 2020, the national education ministry has said that primary education in students' mother tongue is a priority.
Rajasthan ticked all the boxes to host a pilot project.
A survey in nine of its rural districts revealed the magnitude of the task: 250,000 primary school students speaking 31 languages.
Three-quarters of them are far from understanding -- let alone speaking -- Hindi.
'Many obstacles'
The programme faces multiple hurdles -- one of these being that teachers are not trained to use the children's language for formal teaching in the classroom.
"There were many obstacles," said Shweta Fageria, director of Rajasthan's State Council of Educational Research and Training centre.
"We first created dictionaries by using the local dialect," she added, before making them trilingual with Hindi and English.
At the Kuwadi Nichala Fala School, a spartan concrete building on a dusty hill, 13 first graders -- aged around five to six -- leaf through the dictionary every schoolday.
It is a far cry from the other side of India's education system -- the ultramodern technology institutes whose prize pupils are snapped up by Californian tech giants.
In the sweltering heat, the top student deciphers a few lines.
He is still far from mastering reading in his native Wagdi -- a language with more than three million speakers, according to the last census.
But he is making great progress, like all the students in his class, according to his teacher.
"They can now read words," Lakshmi Kumari Patel said.
"At this age, it takes time for a child to be confident, to actively participate," she added. "Now they are more expressive... engaging in conversations without hesitation."
'Abysmal' schooling
Parents are now more involved too.
Since they speak the language being taught, it's up to them to support their children by having them read and telling them stories.
Lalita Parmar, 62, understands the benefits that her grandchildren's education can bring.
"They will be able to get a job, then they will earn and eat," she said. "If one gets a job, the whole family will benefit."
The state government, UNICEF and a local partner have given themselves two years to succeed and, if necessary, to expand.
"Through the programme in Rajasthan, we have seen an improvement in children's attendance at school... teachers are more structured, more planned in using the learning materials available in the classrooms, parents are getting more involved in schools," said Panday from UNICEF.
"We expect children to have better learning outcomes."
The future of India and its economy depends on it, writes economist Ashoka Mody in his recent book, "India is Broken."
"The quality of school education in India remains abysmal," Mody wrote, noting how competitors were progressing.
"India's attempt to make progress on the cheap by unconscionably delaying these investments in education, health and cities has taken its toll.

Earlier, Dubai Police in an effort to make Eid special for female inmates distributed clothing and organised special programmes as part of their ongoing humanitarian and social efforts.

Life's like that: Why I shout from the rooftop on social media
Once upon a time, the word psychiatry was seldom in currency and mental health was shackled to lunatic asylums and treated by a mad man's doctor who more often than not prescribed lashes instead of placebos. In movies, therapeutic counselling sessions were not an option; instead, electroconvulsive therapy, commonly known as shock treatment, was shown to evoke maximum pathos. While mental health in the modern world refers to taking care of our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, back in the day, we grew up watching how such patients and their families were alienated to the point of being ostracised. Sreeni was one such person we avoided in our neighbourhood. As we went to the market or school, we avoided taking a shortcut through his property or having a tête-à-tête with his academically brilliant daughter. We heaved a sigh of relief when Sreeni was found lying on the verandah bound with fetters of iron during an episode. He was proud of his daughter and talked about her achievements when he was 'normal'. We never bothered to see the other side of the family's predicament, such as the plight of his daughter growing up seeing her hapless father tethered to a pillar most of the time. She masked her agony with a smile and academic scores. Fast-forward to the era of the Internet and social media, mental health is no more a taboo and yet it takes centre-stage in discussions, especially after the Covid pandemic and subsequent phenomenon like work from home. People don't cover up their psychological issues and the therapeutic sessions they attend. To seek help is no longer a taboo. In our Dubai heydays, wild family parties on weekends were the only window to throw out one's frustrations and agonies. Friends, parents and children alike waited for such occasions to vent emotions and then hug and make up. And then before the hangover wore thin, those tales would spread like a wildfire. I'm not sure if it's the pandemic that broke the shackles on our mindset. The newfound freedom to talk about one's own mental health in public, especially on social media, has not only emboldened us but also fostered a community that's ready to lend help. Though I was an early bird on every social media platform as soon as it was available, I wasn't a regular on any of them and was even sceptical of those who posted all the happenings in their lives. I would just post my columns or other articles, and wouldn't even revisit to check on the number of likes. I never bothered to hashtag my posts for visibility either. This isn't the first time I have dealt with mental health in this column. It's almost a threadbare topic, so why again, readers might wonder. I have never been a private person. My life has been an open book that all and sundry could read, trample on, and tear pages from. Some even add a foreword or a postscript. Probably alarmed by my frequent portraiture on Facebook, good old friend Suresh Menon commented: 'Is it the old mid-life crisis?' Which made me sit and wonder: 'What am I doing here?' Call it by any other name, even an existential crisis, but I believe I am doing it right. I am not shouting from the rooftop to seek attention or a million likes. I am on social media to express myself; to chronicle my emotions, my frustrations, my likes and dislikes, and my successes and failures. Once sceptical about such platforms, I now use social media to empty myself. FB is not my political manifesto; LinkedIn is not my professional portfolio; Instagram is not my family album. They are my diary entries. They have empowered me to manifest my thoughts. To cry is no more an option but an elixir in life, and when I don't have a Juliet balcony outside my four walls, such platforms lend me a theatre to perform. Call me a hero, or a villain or a comedian, let me act out the last scene of my biopic on this world stage. I know the audience is made up of my family and friends, colleagues present and past, critics and commenders, flames old and new, and role models fallen and evergreen. I remain unbothered. For me at the moment, life is a soliloquy I am destined to act out. I will ever be grateful to those backstage lending me valuable support. I understand social media means different things to different people. To my friend Malaika, it's her alternate universe where she is on a mission to discover what life is all about, and hopes: Somewhere in the future, or sooner I would get to know, What this was all about, Or maybe in some alternate universe Where neither logic nor conscience Determines how or how much I will love you The way love must be. And somewhere down the road, when life after me would turn normal for my loved ones, my posts would stay there as a signboard that would read: 'Once upon a time, here lived a chaotic soul.'

India's new Test captain Gill ready to lead in his own way
India's new Test captain Shubman Gill knows he has big shoes to fill after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he wants to develop his own style of leadership, he said on Thursday. Rohit and Kohli, former skippers and batting mainstays of the team, both quit Test cricket weeks before the start of India's five-test series in England. Gill, 25, impressed as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans, leading them to the playoffs. "The pressure comes with every tour. The two big players have served us for so long, it is not easy to fill that space," Gill told a news conference in Mumbai. "My style of captaincy will be my own, it will develop with experience. I like to communicate with the players. I would try to get them comfortable with their strengths and weaknesses. The players should feel secure, only then will they perform well." Gill was picked as captain ahead of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in two recent Tests in Australia. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited workload management concerns over the 31-year-old Bumrah who will not play all five Tests in England. "We haven't taken the call over which three games (Bumrah is) going to play," India head coach Gautam Gambhir said. "We are going to have a discussion with him and a lot will depend on the results of the series as well, where the series is heading." At least 11 people died and 47 were injured on Wednesday in a crowd surge outside IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru's home stadium during celebrations of their maiden title. "My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives," Gambhir said. "We are all equally responsible for this. Every life matters. If we are not ready to hold a road show, we should not do that."
