BMC allows temp shed at site of razed Jain temple

Time of India17-05-2025

Mumbai: A month after several thousand people from the Jain community took to the streets to protest the demolition of an unauthorized
Jain temple
in
Vile Parle
, the
BMC
has granted permission to construct a
temporary shed
at the site.
The approval, given on Friday, states that an application was received from Shah Doshi & Company on May 16, referring to a high court order of May 14 which mentioned that they had the liberty to make an application before the BMC for permission to construct a monsoon shed. The permission granted on May 16 is valid until Oct 31, 2025, and was granted upon payment of Rs 17,877, according to a civic letter, a copy of which is with TOI.
Politicians across party lines had protested the demolition of the unauthorised temple. Trustees of the temple said that despite the demolition in April, community members continued to gather at the site for prayers. With the onset of the monsoon next month, trustees said they requested a shelter to accommodate worshippers. Anil Shah of the Jain temple trust said, "This is a victory for our faith. There was no proper place for the worshippers to stand and pray as it was entirely open following the civic action.

This will allow us to have a proper monsoon shed."
Meanwhile, the guardian minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who had joined the Jain community members in their protest march last month, said, "This is not merely a matter of religious sentiment, but a mark of the victory of public faith. We stood firmly with the Jain community, respecting their beliefs. The latest decision reinforces their faith and provides rightful support."
Following the Jain community's outcry over the
temple demolition
, the BMC transferred its K/East ward officer Navnath Ghadge on the day of the community's protest, handing additional charge to H/East ward officer Swapnaja Kshirsagar. However, earlier this month, Kshirsagar was moved to G/South ward, and civic officer Nitin Shukla was brought in to take over. Shukla, who was earlier shifted out of F/North ward after objections from local BJP MLA Tamil Selvan, now holds additional charge of K/East ward along with full charge of the BMC's B ward.

Hold all-party meeting on irrigation projects, CPI demands govt

Vijayawada: CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna on Sunday demanded that the State government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the irrigation projects in the State. He said Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu Chandrababu Naidu has taken unilateral decision on construction of Polavaram-Banakcherla (Kurnool) district link project to divert Godavari waters to Rayalaseema region. Addressing a media conference at the State party office, Ramakrishna said Polavaram-Banakacherla project may prove disastrous for Andhra Pradesh. He reminded the Kaleswaram project was disastrous for Telangana State and warned that AP would also face the same problem. He demanded that the Chief Minister should convene an all-party meeting to discuss the pending irrigation projects and the proposed projects to be taken up by the State government. He said it was not correct on the part of the State government to take up Polavaram-Banakcherla project with Rs 82,000 crore when many other projects are not completed and works are pending. He said the Telangana government had started the Kaleswaram project with estimated cost of Rs 81,911 crore and so far the TS government had spent Rs 1.03 lakh crore and still the project is not completed. He said as per the 2024 estimates, the Kaleswaram project needs another Rs 1.47 crore. He said Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu should hold an all-party meeting before proposals are made for construction of Polavaram-Banakacherla project. He pointed out that the Chief Minister was trying to convince the Central government and wanted to go ahead on Banakacherla project. He said the Chief Minister should discuss openly on the Banakcherla project. Ramakrishna pointed out that Vamsadhara, Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi, Handri Neeva, Galeru Nagari, Veligonda, Tarakarama Teertha Sagar, Janjavati and other projects are not completed and felt it is meaningless to spend Rs 82,000 crore on Polavaram-Banakacherla project.

Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu congratulates Prof G Madhavi Latha, engineer behind Chenab Rail Bridge

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 9 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu congratulated Professor G. Madhavi Latha for the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River. CM Naidu lauded the engineer for her 17 years of dedication and sacrifice in building the bridge. Sharing a post on X, Chandrababu Naidu wrote, 'Another Telugu daughter has made India proud! I salute Professor G. Madhavi Latha Garu, one of the brilliant minds behind the world's highest railway bridge over the Chenab River, inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji on June 6. Hailing from a small village in Andhra Pradesh, she dedicated 17 years of hard work and sacrifice to build this architectural marvel for the nation.' The Chief Minister also congratulated the entire team of engineers and construction workers behind the Chenab bridge. 'I congratulate the entire team of engineers and construction workers on completing this unprecedented project, despite the challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions. Your contributions towards nation-building are inspiring,' he added. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River. The architectural marvel, Chenab Rail Bridge, is 359 metres above the river. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. It will officially connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via rail for the first time in history. The Vande Bharat Express train moving on the bridge takes about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing the existing travel time by two to three hours. PM Modi on Friday flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir. This marks a major milestone in Jammu and Kashmir's railway connectivity. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. Along with this, he dedicated the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation. The 272-km-long USBRL project, which includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges, was constructed with an estimated Rs 43,780 crore. (ANI)
