IT was the home of the beloved British comedy for over a decade, but to Mark and Karen Gregory, Benidorm is no joke.

The couple, both 50, have spent over £30,000 in the last seven years sunning themselves in Benidorm, located in Costa Blanca, after falling in love with it during their first visit in 2018.
And the pair, from Swansea, now have no plans to holiday elsewhere ever again, despite anti-tourism protests in some Spanish resorts.
Mark says: 'We used to go to Majorca and the Canaries, until we spotted a deal for a trip to Benidorm one day.
'We thought we'd try it for a week and we were so pleasantly surprised that my wife started looking for accommodation to go again as soon as we got home.
'It's the very best place to holiday.
"The people who have bad opinions about it have never been.
'We aren't big drinkers but enjoy the budget alcohol.
"The pints are 80 cents and bottles of cava are €2.'
The couple often return to the same haunts every time they visit — enjoying a pint at the Western Saloon, dinner at Country Ribs or Kathmandu curry house, and cocktails at the Hotel California Beach Club.
'Stag groups zigzag home at 6am'
They even love seeing the same Meat Loaf tribute act, often referred to as 'Meatloaf Benidorm', at venue Jokers.

Referencing the sitcom, which aired from 2007 to 2018, Mark reflects: 'The TV show is about typical Brits in the sun, but that's only about ten per cent of the place.
'Yes, you get your typical beer-bellied Brits abroad, but there is a much nicer, quieter side too.
"We mainly go outside of the peak season as it's much cheaper, but there's entertainment all year round.
'People do have their own opinions of Benidorm and it is a bit of a 'Marmite' resort — but lots fall in love with it and we can see why.'
The couple enjoy the year-round nightlife, particularly the live music, tribute and drag acts.
And they love it so much they've visited 25 times since late 2018 — barring the pandemic lockdowns — having spent over £30,000 at various resorts in the town.
Mark said: 'We mainly stick to the winter but we've been in May a couple of times.
"In winter it can be nearly 40 per cent cheaper — not just to get there, but at the bars and restaurants too.
'And there is still so much to do — you never get bored.'
The couple say they avoid the spots frequented by large stag dos and hen parties.
Karen said: 'We know the spots to avoid.
'Simply the best'
"But we do still occasionally see the stag groups zigzagging home at 6am.
'There's plenty of mad behaviour to see sometimes — and plenty of people passed out on benches.'
But they find lots of quieter locations to enjoy their evenings.

Some of their favourite nights out have been to see a Pink Floyd tribute act, a Tom Jones tribute and a comedian called Tony Scott.
The couple largely stay in a self-catered apartment which they visit several times a year — and get a discount because of their loyalty, which keeps costs low so they can afford more visits.
But they don't mind, as all the local produce is better quality for their home-cooked meals.
Mark explains: 'We do sometimes go for meals but Karen is coeliac so it's not that easy.
'The supermarkets are much better than in England and there are so many gluten-free options for us.'
The couple say that since discovering their love for Benidorm they have only holidayed elsewhere once, in Tenerife.
But nothing compared to their beloved Benidorm, so they have decided to forget further travel elsewhere.
People do have their own opinions, but I don't like it when people share derogatory views about it when they've never been
Mark Gregory
Mark says: 'There are times we think we might be 'Benidormed out'.
'But then we realise it doesn't compare to anywhere else. And when we go, it just gets better and better.'
They now have no plans to visit elsewhere, and live a frugal life at home so they can afford their £6,000-per-year trips.
Mark added: 'Whenever we go back there are new places that have opened, but we like the familiarity.
'If we go to a new place it takes a few days to find our feet, whereas going here, it's like coming home.'
He added: 'People do have their own opinions, but I don't like it when people share derogatory views about it when they've never been.
'If you've never tried it, and you've just watched the TV show or read about it, don't just jump on the bandwagon. Benidorm is quite simply the best.'

Edinburgh Festival Fringe: 'I went to see an '80s TV icon and left after 20 minutes'

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The British television icon, Bobby Davro, has returned for his second full length run at the Edinburgh Fringe. I was warned in advance about what to expect, however in an attempt at maintaining journalistic neutrality, I went into this experience with an open mind. I've always been of the persuasion that all art is inherently political… and I still do believe that, however what Bobby Davro does is not art at all, and it certainly isn't political - it's just rehearsing 90 minutes worth of the things reposted on Facebook by your uncle that no longer gets invited to Christmas. The show opens with a satirical disclaimer poking fun at the 'woke' agenda, followed by a singalong of The Proclaimers' '500 Miles' where he encourages his audience to chant his name during the chorus - something I'm told he's been doing for a very long time, this got a good response. From the outset, Davro makes repeated gags about trans and queer people, the one receiving the best audience reaction being his intentional misspelling of LGBTQ+ … a joke I'm sure took him hours to come up with. Other jokes in the show featured such explosive comedy as 'I'm not racist, I've got a colour TV' as well as upon gesturing to an audience member, 'look, she laughed so much at that one she's got tears dribbling down her leg!'. Some of the women in the crowd appeared visibly disturbed and at times confused by the 'jokes' being told on stage and while at no point do I claim that I speak for women - I'm fairly comfortable saying that this show is not targeted towards a female audience… at all. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages Davro's material gave off the impression he was trying his absolute hardest to be edgy, but just didn't quite have it in him to be witty or nuanced about it whatsoever. This performance had no charm, substance or depth. The act would have been somewhat meta or reflective if it were written about 30 years ago and by the sound of the material itself, it was. Listen, Bobby Davro (Robert Christopher Nankeville) has the right to earn a living as much as anybody, unfortunately for him I just don't think the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the place to do that. In truth I left this show about 20 minutes in, I felt uncomfortable and cringed out for my entire time there. I'd like to offer my utmost apologies to Mr Davro if the part of the show I missed turned into the most profound, era defining comedy anyone's ever seen… but I sincerely doubt it.

Brits in Majorca warned they face £435 fines over 'respect' in new crackdown

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info British holidaymakers could be hit with a hefty €500 (£436) penalty if they step out of line on a beloved Spanish island, with revellers on nights out particularly at risk. The Balearic gem of Majorca remains a firm favourite with UK tourists and is expected to be bustling this summer with visitors seeking sun and fun. However, in recent years, locals have developed mixed feelings about tourists from Britain and similar countries, with demonstrations erupting over skyrocketing property costs and environmental harm from the tourism sector. Now Brits enjoying a Mediterranean getaway are being urged to mind their behaviour, as warning notices have appeared across the island urging visitors to demonstrate "respect" during their stay or risk substantial financial penalties. The steepest fine, €500 (£435), applies to consuming alcohol on public streets, whilst "shouting, fighting or bothering people" can result in individuals receiving a €400 (£348) charge, as can nudity or partial nudity outside beach areas, reports the Express. This development follows concerns that Spanish islands worry Brits may not return as tourists face yet another setback. Advisory notices have been scattered throughout various Calvia streets, displaying warnings in both English and Spanish. The signs display the hashtag #havefunwithrespect, or #divierteteconrespeto in Spanish. "Dirtying the street" also carries a €200 (£174) punishment, with the notices positioned along Punta Ballena in Magaluf, alongside others on Ramon de Montcada in Santa Ponsa, according to the Liverpool Echo. Whilst these penalties apply to these specific locations, visitors to other Spanish resorts should acquaint themselves with additional regulations before departing. Local legislation restricts alcohol sales in certain destinations, including Magaluf, Playa de Palma, and San Antonio, for instance. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) additionally cautions that accommodation providers "will evict you if you behave dangerously on balconies", and you may face a penalty as well. FCDO guidance for Spain states: "In some parts of Spain it's illegal to be in the street wearing only a bikini or swimming shorts. "Being bare-chested is also illegal in some areas in Spain. You could be fined if you're caught wearing swimwear on the seafront promenade or adjacent streets." Holidaymakers are also being cautioned about operating drones in Spain following an incident where a tourist had their device confiscated, with the matter referred to Spain's State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) for administrative action. Spanish and EU legislation requires prior authorisation for all drone operations in built-up areas or above gatherings, whilst operators must possess training, registration, and insurance. Spain enforces stringent drone regulations, with breaches treated with gravity - penalties can span from €60 to an eye-watering €225,000 for the most severe infractions, depending on the offence's seriousness.

British passport holders urged to check important new rule before travelling in Europe

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A travel expert has issued a crucial alert to all British passport holders planning a European getaway from 12th October onwards. Vix Aguilera, an ATOL and ABTA protected UK travel agent, took to TikTok to outline changes coming to eGates, the automated self-service border control systems. "A new EES [Entry/Exit system] is going to apply to all non-EU citizens visiting the Schengen area and essentially it will eliminate the need to queue and get a stamp," she started. The shift will require travellers to provide facial recognition and fingerprints at a new self-service kiosk instead. "You will be submitting your biometric data upon arrival in the country," Vix clarified. "This will then be stored on a central database and linked to your UK travel guru advised that this record will be valid for three years, meaning you only need to go through the process once when you first enter." Now this is the intriguing part - it's going to be rolled out from 12th October in a phased approach," Vix continued." So although every country is within their rights to implement it immediately to reduce the need for additional queues, reports Bristol Live. "She further explained: "The way they are going to be doing this is by staggering it, so from days one to 29 there's going to be no minimum requirement and after that there's going to be 10% of passengers required to scan etc. " But according to Vix, there's no cause for immediate alarm as airport security personnel will be on hand to help travellers navigate the new procedure when they arrive." You just turn up to the eGates then have yourself directed by staff," she Vix warned against mixing up these alterations with the forthcoming ETIAS - European Travel Information and Authorization System - a fresh requirement for visa-exempt nationals visiting 30 European countries." That's not going to be rolled out until the latter end of 2026 - and that will require a pre-travel authorisation," she who will be impacted by the change on October 12? Vix added: "Obviously if you are travelling from this date, if you are going to a Schengen area, and if you are a non-EU citizen and you are looking to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. "One TikTok user expressed gratitude for the clear explanation: "Thank you for explaining this so well. I was confused thinking it's the ETS, and since I'm travelling in December, worried that it being new might give me issues, but this is good info to have. "The rationale behind these modifications? The UK government's website, which offers additional details, explains: "EES is designed to improve border security within the EU and its neighbouring countries, and reduce illegal migration in the Schengen area. It will automate border control checks to help the EU stop visitors overstaying. " The statement notes: "The checks may take a few minutes, so be prepared to wait during busy times. If you enter the Schengen area through the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, EES checks will be completed at the border, before you leave the UK. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area. ". The countries included are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
