This Portuguese Town Has the Largest Surfing Waves On the Planet—With 100-foot-tall Waves Recorded
In early 2024, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner caught a 93.73-foot-tall wave at Nazaré's Praia do Norte , what might be the tallest recorded wave ever surfed (Guinness hasn't confirmed it yet). Steudtner did, however, nab the current world record after surfing an 86-foot-tall wave off the same beach in 2020. A giant wave crashing into the cliffs and lighthouse in Nazare.

These massive waves may seem like anomalies, but there's a scientific reason they exist. The Nazaré Canyon, also known as the largest underwater canyon in Europe, extends approximately 130 miles west of Portugal. At its deepest point, the canyon reaches over 14,000 feet below sea level.
Swells refract (switch direction) as they make their way over different depths, so this abrupt change between the canyon and the continental shelf magnifies the swell, helping create the giant waves that travelers come from far and wide to see. Other factors, such as the direction of the current and converging waves, also play a key role.
If you want to spot or surf one of the Big Waves yourself, you'll want to visit during 'Big Wave' season, from October to March. This time of year is your best chance to see the natural occurrence, but witnessing a 100-foot-tall wave isn't always guaranteed. The city of Nazare, Portugal and the Praia da Nazare beach.

No matter when in the season you decide to come, it's recommended to stay for at least a couple of weeks if you can. An extended timeline will increase your chances of seeing the famous waves. You can also plan your trip around the annual Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, which brings some of the world's most talented (and brave) surfers to this part of Portugal.
The Nazaré Waves website details a daily and weekly forecast—noting if the waves are expected to be 'medium,' 'big,' or 'giant'—and you can check the action via two live webcams. When you're in town, seek out the best views of the waves by heading up to Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo , where you'll find the Nazaré Lighthouse; both are excellent viewpoints. You can also stay on ground level at Praia do Norte , but be sure to keep a safe distance from the water.

This TikTok Influencer Broke Down In Tears While Blaming ChatGPT For Making Her Miss Her Flight, And People Are Truly Baffled
Here's a word of warning to anyone who might be putting a liiiittle too much faith in AI: Always do your own research — especially if there might be expensive consequences. On Aug. 13, a Spanish content creator called Mery Caldass posted a video on TikTok of her sobbing in an airport after missing her flight to Puerto Rico. She wasn't able to make the journey due to the fact that she didn't prepare the right paperwork, which, she says, is the fault of ChatGPT — an AI assistant used by 500 million people every week. Related: 'I asked ChatGPT and he said no,' she says in Spanish, as she recalls asking the AI tool if she would need a visa to fly to Puerto Rico. For context, a visa is not needed for European Union citizens to enter Puerto Rico if their stay does not exceed 90 days. However, visitors still must complete the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (better known as an ESTA), which is an application that is done online in advance of a trip to determine a person's eligibility to enter the United States. Related: Realizing her error, Caldass says through tears: 'That's what I get for not getting more information…I don't trust that one anymore.' Referring to ChatGPT, she also suggests that the information mix-up might have been 'his revenge' for when she had previously insulted the bot. Since the clip was posted, it's gained attention across TikTok and other social media sites. On Reddit, users discussing the video reflected on the recent surge in the use of AI assistants and expressed disbelief that people are relying solely on ChatGPT for things like travel advice. 'We're so cooked,' one popular comment read. 'I wouldn't even trust ChatGPT to tell me if the sky is blue let alone rely on it for airport/flight info,' said another. 'People will do anything but look at the actual government websites,' one user wrote, while someone else questioned if the wider trend is due to 'low rates of media literacy.' 'It feels like the low rates of media literacy have led to so many people having no idea how to find reputable data sources, so they just trust AI when they ask it questions because they figure it got the data [from] somewhere,' they wrote. 'But the problem is you still should verify the sources it drew from. I've caught it being entirely wrong several times and quoting questionable sources.' 'Why is ChatGPT the first step and not, idk, googling the airport's website or flight number?' added someone else, who talked about the increase in people using ChatGPT for important travel information. Related: Of course, it's worth noting that ChatGPT can be helpful for some people, particularly for things like making lists or helping with phrasing. (In July, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, said the tool now 'thinks and acts' after a new update.) However, most people agree that it's still pretty important to research things yourself, too. So, what do you make of this? I personally can't think of anything worse than relying on ChatGPT to give me the information I need about flying across the world, but that's just me. James Carville says Dems should ‘kick the s— out of' JD Vance over England vacation
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville used some colorful language on Wednesday in describing how his party should go after Vice President JD Vance for taking a vacation to the 'Martha's Vineyard of England.' During the latest episode of his 'Politics War Room' podcast with co-host Al Hunt, Carville blasted Vance both for stumping for the Big, Beautiful Bill and for planning a vacation to Oxfordshire, England, suggesting they were evidence that Vance does not care about working-class Americans. He then urged the Democratic Party to blast him for these blunders. 'Use JD Vance and just kick the s— out of him every chance you get,' he said to the Democratic Party. Hunt began the Vance-bashing by bringing up his recent stop in Georgia to sell Americans on President Donald Trump's $3.3 trillion 'Big, Beautiful Bill' that the president signed into law earlier this summer. Carville encouraged Vance to stump for the legislation, noting the bill's unpopularity, and stated that Democratic lawmakers like Sen. John Ossoff, D-Ga., should welcome the vice president's criticism for not supporting the bill. 3 James Carville flamed Vice President JD Vance over his recent vacation to Oxfordshire, England. Getty Images 'So, memo to John Ossoff, let JD Vance frame the debate. Accept his terms of the debate. As we pointed out, the most unpopular piece of legislation in recent times in this century is the big, bad bill. If they give you a gift, take the gift,' the strategist stated. Stating what he believes Ossoff should say, he continued, 'The vice president came to Georgia, and he's attacking me because I voted against this. Well, guess what? I did. And I would do it again, and again, and again, and again.' 'When you get a gift, take the g—– gift.' 3 U.S. Vice President JD Vance fishes with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House on August 8, 2025 in Sevenoaks, England. Getty Images He then discussed how Vance's vacation to England earlier this month is another soft spot Democratic figures should attack. 'He went on a vacation. Florida resorts are hurting. Las Vegas tourism is down substantially. National Parks – Yellowstone's down 15%,' he said. 'So, okay, he's entitled to a vacation. I'll give him that. Guess where he went? To a place called Oxfordshire in England – which is a tony, wealthy place that rich Londoners go to. Call it the Martha's Vineyard of England. And why we didn't blow this up!' 'You mean, you can't vacation, and your wife and kids, in your own country?' Carville added in outrage. 3 A view of Chevening House in Kent, England, as Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Vice President JD Vance meet inside, Friday, Aug. 8, 2025. AP He urged Democrats to seize on both the vacation and the legislation at every opportunity. Hunt chimed in, 'Every Democrat, bring him into your district. You want JD Vance there.' 'Yeah, you want JD. Yeah, yeah, JD f—— Vance – going to Oxfordshire,' Carville replied. The vice president's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
