New York Liberty Lose Star For Season

Yahoo15-05-2025

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will miss the 2025 WNBA season for the New York Liberty as she recovers from a knee injury. Laney-Hamilton suffered an acute meniscus injury to her left knee while playing in Unrivaled, the offseason 3-on-3 league.
This is a major blow to the Liberty's hopes at defending their WNBA championship this season. Laney-Hamilton already has undergone surgery for the knee injury in March. She is slotted to be involved in a recovery timeline that ranges between five and six months.
"Our hearts break for Betnijah that she will not be able to take the court this season," Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement, ESPN.com reported. "Betnijah gave us everything last season en route to becoming a WNBA champion. ... We will continue to ensure that she receives the best possible care throughout her rehabilitation process."

Laney-Hamilton, a 6-foot guard-forward, is a two-time all-WNBA defensive selection. She also was a 2021 WNBA All-Star and earned the league's 2020 Most Improved Player honor.
Knee injuries have sidelined Betinah Laney-Hamilton in recent seasons for New York
This is not the first time that the star player has had to deal with knee injuries. Last season, Laney-Hamilton missed 12 games because of right knee problems. She did average 11.8 points and 4.2 rebounds last season. In the 2023 season, Laney-Hamilton played in the Liberty's entire 40-game regular season. In 2023, though, she only played in nine games because of a right knee injury.
The Liberty have made the decision to suspend Laney-Hamilton's contract. This takes her salary off of the team's cap sheet. It also gives New York room to add a player before the WNBA regular season starts, making sure it has a full 12-player roster ready to go.

"We are fully confident that she's going to make a full return," Kolb said earlier in May. "She's going to have a great opportunity to be the healthiest she has been in some years."
Laney-Hamilton will be present on Saturday when the Liberty players receive their WNBA championship rings. The team also will raise its championship banner to the Barclays Center rafters.

Chicago Sky Coach's Angel Reese Comments Surface Before Indiana Fever Game

Chicago Sky Coach's Angel Reese Comments Surface Before Indiana Fever Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Sky currently hold a 2-4 record after the first month of the 2025 WNBA season. New head coach Tyler Marsh and the Sky started off on a four-game losing streak but rebounded with back-to-back wins against the 1-6 Dallas Wings. Advertisement Second-year post players Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, both of whom were first-round picks during the 2024 WNBA Draft, have put together solid campaigns once again. Cardoso is averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest, while Reese is contributing 10.0 points and a league-leading 12.3 rebounds per game. Both landed on the 2024 WNBA All-Rookie team last season, and they have grown even more in their second year. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5).Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Part of this growth can be attributed to assistant coach Courtney Paris, an 11-year WNBA veteran who was hired as an assistant coach under Tyler Marsh this season. She won the 2018 WNBA championship with the Seattle Storm and led the league in total rebounds on two occasions. Advertisement Paris spoke with Sky reporter Karli Bell ahead of the team's rematch against the Indiana Fever on Saturday. She spoke about 2024 WNBA All-Star forward Angel Reese and what has impressed her most. 'She has another level. When it's time to play, she competes at a level, and you can teach anything you want to teach in sports, but that competitive edge that you bring every day is either you have it or you don't,' Paris said. 'She just has it to the top level, even with all the pressure she has on her. That's what most impressed me about her and what continues to impress me about her.' Reese averaged 13.6 points and a WNBA-record 13.1 rebounds per game as a rookie, which landed her a spot on both the All-Star and All-Rookie teams. She is averaging a double-double once again this season and has four games of 12 or more rebounds. On Saturday, the Sky will host the Indiana Fever at the United Center in Chicago for their first game of the Commissioner's Cup. They will also be looking to avenge the 93 to 58 defeat that they suffered on opening day of the 2025 season. The game will tipoff at 8:00 p.m. EST. While she is the team's third-leading scorer, she is also second in rebounds and leads the Sky in blocks. Advertisement After receiving this news, new head coach Tyler Marsh spoke to the media after Thursday's practice. He talked about Cardoso and how the team plans to move on without her for a portion of the season. "I think, from our standpoint and from Kamilla's standpoint, she's doing everything that she can do to be present and here for us," Marsh said. "When she goes off, then she'll handle her responsibilities, then she'll be back with us. We'll hold it down as best we can until she gets back." Cardoso was a member of the All-Rookie team last season after being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Fellow first-round draftee Angel Reese was also a member, and she even made the 2024 WNBA All-Star team after leading the league in rebounds per game.
