New research reveals the impact that noise has on us, with almost nine in ten saying certain sounds send their stress levels soaring. Stress-triggering sounds cause Brits' heart rates to spike an average of eight times a week, with nearly half saying that parts of modern life feel too loud and overwhelming.
Hhammering and banging top the list, closely followed by the yap of a small dog and the sound of drilling coming from next door. Other irritating noises include noisy chewing, snoring partners, revving engines, slurping tea or coffee, car horns, and high-pitched children's toys.
The research from Hive, found that building and renovation noises feature heavily in the list. One in three say people playing music or videos loudly on their phones drives them mad, while over a quarter say speakerphone conversations in public spike their stress.
Professor. Jamie Ward from the University of Sussex's School of Psychology said: 'Everyday sounds do more than just annoy us, they can elevate stress levels, interrupt focus, and even interfere with sleep. In some cases, they can also strain relationships. However, different types of sounds may annoy us in different ways and some people have greater sound sensitivity than others.
'Sounds also have the power to stir positive emotions. Research shows we are biologically inclined to find natural sounds calming, while slowly building crescendos can trigger an intense positive sensation known as 'the chills. With the right balance of tempo and tone, sound can be a powerful tool for wellbeing.'
To help the nation tune out and take back control of their environment, Hive has launched a mindfulness track, Green Noise. Designed to soothe stress and promote calm, the track features the gentle hum of a heat pump, the whir of an EV and the soft click of a smart thermostat.

But Professor Franklin Joseph, head of Dr Frank's Weight Loss Clinic, said ditching fat completely could backfire - especially when it comes to tackling stubborn weight around the middle. According to the expert, many of these so-called slimming foods are highly processed and loaded with sugar and starch. 'Just because it says 'low-fat' doesn't mean it's good for weight loss,' he said. 'These foods often strip out the fat but pack in sugar, gums and additives - and that combination can actually drive hunger and fat gain.' 'Your body needs fat for hormone regulation and satiety. "Take it away and replace it with sugar, and you've got the perfect storm for increased cravings - especially around the waistline.' Fat-free - but not healthy? Many popular 'diet' foods rely on ingredients like maltodextrin, glucose syrup or modified starches to maintain taste and texture - but this can spike blood sugar and insulin, encouraging fat storage around the stomach. And with ultra low-fat, high-carb eating plans gaining popularity again on platforms like TikTok and YouTube - including the recent rise of so-called 'sugar diets' - Prof Joseph said people may unknowingly be sabotaging their fat loss. 'It's a trap we've seen for decades - low-fat food that ends up making people hungrier,' he said. Nutrionist hacks that make healthy eating easy 'Now we're seeing a resurgence of sugar-heavy, fat-free diets being pushed online - but the science doesn't support long-term success. 'These trends can be misleading. "They sound clean and simple, but they often promote foods that don't fill you up and don't support metabolic health.' The smarter swaps Instead of avoiding all fats, Prof Joseph advised including small amounts of healthy fats from foods like olive oil, seeds, avocado and nuts - alongside high-fibre carbs and lean protein. 'Healthy fats can actually reduce cravings, regulate blood sugar and help you feel full,' he said. 'That's far more effective than snacking on fat-free yoghurts or low-fat cereal bars all day. 'It's not about banning foods - it's about recognising that real, minimally processed meals are better than ultra-processed products with a diet label.' How to blast belly fat WITHOUT going to the gym or dieting Chew your food This mindfulness trick is used to focus your brain on the food you are eating - how it tastes and feels - rather than scoffing it in a hurry. If the brain does not register that you have eaten, you'll soon crave more food. Avocado a day Eating avocado every day can fight visceral fat in women, which collects around the organs in the stomach and can lead to diabetes, heart attack, and some cancers, according to a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign study of 105 people. Avoid fizzy drinks Losing belly 'fat' may just be a case of preventing bloating, which can be onset by fizzy soft drinks. Instead, keep hydrated with water. Reduce alcohol Alcohol does no favours at all for our health or figures. It is 'empty calories', meaning it contributes to your calorie intake without giving any nutritional benefit. Hangovers can also lead you to eat more fatty foods, while putting you off exercising. Sleep more Various studies have shown that if you're not sleeping well, it can cause weight gain. People are more likely to crave junk food when they are sleep deprived because, not only are they in need of an energy boost, but their appetite hormones are all over the place. Reduce stress Stress causes an imbalance of hormones, particularly cortisol. This hormone has been linked with obesity and excess belly fat. Find ways to reduce your stress to avoid the so-called 'stress belly'.

The recall covers Orgenism Eggshell Membrane Capsules, sold online and linked to rising salmonella cases across Britain. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert confirming that Salmonella bacteria found in the product is not only making people sick, but is also resistant to several commonly used antibiotics — making it harder to treat. A warning has been issued to not eat the product under any circumstances and to avoid disposing of it in household waste or flushing it down the toilet, due to the risk of further environmental and public health contamination. All batches of the supplement, sold in 60-capsule packs, 500mg per serving, are affected. A spokesperson for the FSA said: "The Salmonella found in this product produces extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and is resistant to fluroquinolones, tetracycline and fosfomycin." Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhoea, and stomach cramps. Anyone who has consumed the product and feels unwell is urged to contact a healthcare professional or call NHS 111 for advice. Consumers are also being told not to buy the supplement from any outlet, including market stalls, independent retailers, or social media, and to report any sightings of it being sold elsewhere. Orgenism has stopped all sales and launched a full recall. Customers are being offered a free pre-paid returns envelope and a full refund. More than 2 million Brits have undiagnosed ADHD - but as it can be hard to identify in adults, many people may live with it which could then lead to various challenges An estimated 2.25 million Brits have undiagnosed ADHD - and this could lead to various challenges for them in their daily lives. Not only this but studies suggest around 25% of adults suspect they have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) but a very small percentage of those actually seek professional evaluation. ‌ ADHD UK reports "people with ADHD show a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity–impulsivity that interferes with day-to-day functioning and/or development" . To help you recognise key signs, psychiatrist Ahmed Hankir, who is known as @proahmedhankir on social media, has taken to TikTok to share common signs seen in adults. ‌ He said: "ADHD isn't just a childhood condition - and in adults, the symptoms can be a lot more subtle. Clinically, ADHD is grouped into three core symptom clusters inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity." ‌ Breaking down the "five real signs you might notice in adulthood", he said: "Sign one - restlessness or difficulty relaxing (hyperactivity). "You might feel constantly on edge or like you can't switch off -even when sitting still. Your leg's bouncing, your mind's racing, and relaxation feels impossible." For sign two, he spoke about a compulsion to interrupt others or finish their sentences - classifying this as impulsivity. ‌ He added: "It's not that you're rude - you just blurt things out before thinking, or cut people off without meaning to. You realise it afterwards, but in the moment it feels automatic." For sign three, he says people with ADHD tend to make rash decisions, describing this as impulsivity. ‌ "You might suddenly change jobs, book a trip, or make a huge purchase without fully thinking it through," he added. "Later, you're left wondering, 'Why the hell did I do that?'" He added: "Sign four - difficulty paying close attention to details (Inattention). You miss things – important things. Like appointments, deadlines and meetings. Forms? Emails? They become a blur. It's mentally exhausting." Finally, he says the fifth sign to watch out for is frequently starting tasks but not finishing them, saying this shows both inattention and impulsivity. He added: "You start one task, then jump to another, and another... and end up with five open tabs and nothing finished. It's not laziness – it's how your brain processes attention and motivation. "Just because you relate to some of these doesn't mean you have ADHD. But if they're persistent and impact your daily life, it's worth speaking to a mental health professional for a formal assessment." If you suspect you have ADHD, visit your GP for an assessment.
