The Lakers will unveil a new statue of another team legend this season

USA Today3 days ago
Over the years, the Los Angeles Lakers have erected a number of statues honoring team legends outside of Crypto.com Arena. This coming season, another one will be added to the collection.
Early this past season, the Lakers announced that former coach Pat Riley would be getting a statue. Now, the date that his statue will be unveiled has been set.
Riley's statue will be revealed to the public on Feb. 22, which is when the Boston Celtics make their annual trip out West to face the Lakers. That is fitting, given that Riley's defining moments as the team's coach were those battles against the Celtics in the NBA Finals.
Riley became the Lakers' head coach early in the 1981-82 season after serving two years as an assistant coach and five and a half seasons as a bench player with them in the 1970s. They blew the 1984 NBA championship against the Celtics, but with Riley emphasizing defense, rebounding, physicality and overall toughness, the Lakers beat the Celtics in the finals for the first time in eight attempts in 1985, then got another ring against the men in green in 1987.
Overall, Riley won four world titles in nine seasons as the Lakers' head coach. He guaranteed they would repeat as champions following their victory over Boston in 1987, and they delivered, making them the first NBA team to win back-to-back championships in 19 years.
This season's Lakers-Celtics matchups won't have that much intrigue since star forward Jayson Tatum will miss the entire year due to a torn Achilles. But older fans who were around for the Showtime era will certainly be looking forward to Feb. 22.

On the Boston Celtics signing former two way wing Ron Harper Jr. to a training camp deal

The Boston Celtics have signed former two way wing Ron Harper Jr. to a training camp deal. What made the Celtics want to ink the prospect to a deal this summer? Is the plan to have him compete for the team's final open regular roster spot? Could he dislodge one of the trio of players Boston has under contract for their own two way slots in Amari Williams, Max Shulga, or RJ Luis Jr.? Or is the plan to get him back to the Maine Celtics at the G League level, where he previously played within the wider franchise orbit? The folks behind the "Cyro Asseo" YouTube channel put together a clip taking a closer look at the signing and what Boston's front office might be planning for Brewer. Check it out below! When will former Thunder Dillon Jones receive his NBA championship ring?

As is tradition, Opening Night will be about the Oklahoma City Thunder. The NBA champions will kick off the 2025-26 regular season when they host the Houston Rockets. The pregame ceremony will be as intriguing to watch as the game itself. They will drop their title banner and be handed their ring. Once the festivities are over, the Thunder will start their championship reign. They're a popular pick to repeat as champions. They sit at the mountaintop knowing they're going to get the best shot of the other 29 teams in the league. Before they fully move on from their 2025 NBA Finals win, though, they have one small afterparty left to celebrate one of the greatest teams in league history. One of the reasons why the Thunder are viewed as the consensus favorite is their continuity. Besides some bottom of the depth chart changes, the Thunder will run it back with the same roster. Because of that, there will be at least one more pregame ring ceremony after Opening Night. Dillon Jones will return to OKC early in the season. The Oklahoma City Thunder will host the Washington Wizards on Thursday, Oct. 30. It should be a mundane blowout as both teams are on opposite sides of the NBA highway. Before that happens, though, Jones will receive his championship ring. The Thunder traded Jones in a salary dump deal. The 23-year-old had a forgettable rookie season that turned out to be his only year in OKC. He won an NBA championship out of it and now hopes to get rotation minutes in a rebuild situation. It'll be fun to see Jones receive his championship ring. He's the only player who left the Thunder's standard roster. Everybody else will be back next season as they hope to get another NBA championship.

Luka Doncic diagnosed with left knee contusion, will continue to play for Slovenia at EuroBasket

This looked like it could have been much worse in the moment, with Luka Doncic's Slovenian teammate Gregor Hrovat falling and crashing into his knee during an exhibition game against Latvia. Luka Doncic's teammate fell into him and the Lakers star appeared to injure his knee. Doncic asked out of the game and went back to the Slovenia locker room. While Doncic limped back to the locker room after this, he was diagnosed with just a knee contusion, reports Marc Stein. Doncic will return to practice with the Slovenian team on Monday as they gear up for the start of EuroBasket at the end of the month, adds Dan Woike of The Athletic. A source tells me Luka Dončić escaped today without any significant injury and will remain with the Slovenian national team and continue to compete in EuroBasket this summer. With Doncic, Slovenia has a chance to medal at the European championships (they are sixth in betting odds to win the entire thing, according to Bet MGM). He is the heart and soul of their team, as evidenced by his 26 points, five rebounds and five assists against Latvia in the first half. With Doncic out, Latvia went on an 18-0 run and went on to win the exhibition, behind 20 points from Kristaps Porzingis and 16 from Davis Bertans.
