Babita Phogat Disappointed As Wrestling Not A Part Of Commonwealth Games 2026
In a massive blow to India's medal chances, cricket, field hockey, badminton, wrestling, among others, have been dropped from the programme for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, which will be held from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
The sporting event's return to the Scottish city after a 12-year absence would not be as bright for the Indians, as some of their best medal-scoring sports have been removed from the schedule. The CWG 2026 will feature only 10 sports across four venues placed within an eight-mile corridor.
The 10-sport itinerary for Glasgow 2026 includes athletics (track and field), swimming, 3x3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo. The para variants of the first five will be part of the integrated para programme at the 2026 CWG.
Four venues will host the game, including Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirates Arena (which features the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome), and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
The list of sports for the 2026 CWG is way thinner than the 2022 edition in Birmingham, which had 20 sports.

Jaipur: The campaign to give a new identity to kabaddi on the world stage has intensified in the Indian sports world. In the Special General Body Meeting (SGM) of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) held in Delhi recently, a demand was made to officially include kabaddi in the Commonwealth Games likely to be held in India in 2030. This proposal was put forward by Rajasthan Olympic Association president Tejaswi Singh Gehlot, along with whom Indian Kabaddi Association president Vibhor Vineet Jain and vice-president Vijayarani were also present in the meeting. Gehlot said that kabaddi is a game linked to the culture, tradition and soil of India, which should get a place on the prestigious international platform like the Commonwealth. During this, IOA said that before the 2030 Commonwealth Games, kabaddi competitions of Commonwealth countries should be organised in India so that players get better opportunity for preparation and experience and enthusiasm and awareness towards the sport increases among the public. It was also agreed in the meeting that India should make organised and strategic efforts to include kabaddi in the 2036 Olympics. Gehlot said, "This sport has the potential to become not just India's but the world's sport now. The national level event will prepare the players to play at international standards and take the popularity of the sport to new heights." Tejaswi Singh said that if kabaddi gets a place in the Commonwealth Games, it will not only increase the reach of the sport from rural India to urban youth but will also give global recognition to India's traditional sports culture. Sreeja Akula edged out senior compatriot Manika Batra 3-2 in a much anticipated WTT Europe Smash 2025 clash in Sweden fell firmly on the much-awaited all-India women's singles clash. The tall Delhi paddler, a CWG champ formerly, struck back using her backhand skiddy blocks and threw in all the tricks of spin to level scores. The next two games followed the same pattern, even as urgency set in despite the prolonging exchanges. However, Sreeja who has been working on her mental strength came away far more poised in the decider. She kept a good intensity on attack, stayed precise and consistent and pounced on the short chops, remaining unerring in the serve. She would celebrate audibly pumping her fist. In the next match though, Sreeja was caught out when she relapsed to using the long pimples, and couldn't sustain aggression against the much higher ranked opponent. An attacking style is what suits Sreeja, and though the pimples are strategic, she will need to build endurance to not revert to pimples once the novelty or surprise wears off for opponents.
