Pakistan to send diplomatic delegation abroad to counter India's global outreach

The Hindu18-05-2025

Hours after India decided to send its delegations to key partner countries to put across its resolve to tackle terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that he would send a diplomatic team to important world capitals to present his country's stance.
The decision was made by Mr. Sharif on Saturday (May 17, 2025) after a telephone conversation with former Foreign Minister and head of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Pakistan's decision to send its delegation came hours after India announced that it would send seven all-party delegations to key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council, later this month, to convey India's message of zero tolerance against terrorism following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Mr. Shehbaz 'decided to send a high-level diplomatic delegation to important world capitals to expose Indian propaganda', the state-run Radio Pakistan reported.
He has entrusted the leadership of the delegation to Mr. Bhutto Zardari.
'I was contacted earlier today by Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif], who requested that I lead a delegation to present Pakistan's case for peace on the international stage. I am honoured to accept this responsibility and remain committed to serving Pakistan in these challenging times,' Mr. Bhutto Zardari posted on social media platform X on Saturday (May 17, 2025).
Apart from Mr. Bhutto Zardari, the delegation will include Energy Minister Musadik Malik, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Khurram Dastgir Khan, Senator Sherry Rehman, former Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Muttahida Qaumi Movement lawmaker Faisal Subzwari, and former Foreign Secretaries Tehmina Janjua and Jalil Abbas Jilani.
The delegation will also 'underscore Pakistan's sincere efforts for peace and stability in the region,' according to the PMO.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the delegation would soon visit the United States, the U.K., Brussels, France, and Russia to highlight Pakistan's stance on the recent conflict.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

BJP calls for global condemnation after Tagore's ancestral home vandalised in Bangladesh

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra cited media reports to say that Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam were behind the attack, noting that Tagore is an iconic symbol of Bengal, and Indian culture and civilisation. New Delhi : The BJP on Thursday condemned the interim government in Bangladesh over the vandalisation of Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in that country and called for global denunciation of the incident targeting the legacy of the iconic Indian personality. He also slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not raising the issue, alleging that she saw infiltrators from the neighbouring Bangladesh as a vote bank and has opted to keep quiet for political reasons. 'She is driven by vote bank politics. We are driven by cultural politics,' he told reporters. The interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus has not taken any action, and its conduct has not been appropriate, Patra said. He appealed to the world community to come together against it, adding that his party believes in inclusivity. 'We are giving a global call to all the countries which value morality, civilisational thoughts, creativity and culture. They should all come together to denounce what has happened in Bangladesh,' he said. Patra said Tagore created many of memorable works in this ancestral home, known as Kachharibari and is recognised by the government there as a museum. The BJP MP noted that he not only wrote India's national anthem but also that of Bangladesh, which has seen a surge in the activities of Islamic hardlines following the deposition of Sheikh Hasina last year. Indian startups, emerging entities attract over $150 billion funding in a decade: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: There has been a surge in private investments in the last 11 years, with Indian startups and emerging entities attracting significant private funding to the tune of over $150 billion in the past decade, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday. More than Rs 22,900 crore have been invested in over 1,270 startups via the government's Fund of Funds for Startups scheme. "India is embracing technology like no other! This digital transformation is the outcome of the forward-looking vision and timely policy interventions under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Every section of society and every aspect of life has been positively impacted by 11 years of Digital India," Goyal said in a post on social media platform X. IP filings by the domestic startups surged from 2017 to 2024, with over 355 per cent growth in patents and more than 543 per cent growth in trademarks. India now ranks 39th globally on the 'Global Innovation Index 2024'. Goyal said he is proud to witness the profound impact of PM Narendra Modi's revolutionary initiative 'Startup India' on boosting innovation and enterprise in the country. "The remarkable talent of our youth and women is powering this revolution and driving India's economic growth with unparalleled vigour," he mentioned. India has become the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, with more than 1.5 lakh startups and over 100 unicorns. "11 years of Digital India has empowered every citizen with seamless services, financial access, and last-mile connectivity," said Minister of State for Commerce and Electronics and IT, Jitin Prasada. The digital revolution, which began 11 years ago, is entrenched in almost every policy-making and public welfare scheme delivery with elaborate plans on how to bring benefits to the poor, downtrodden and marginalised sections. Prime Minister Modi took to X on Thursday and wrote about "leveraging the power of technology in bringing innumerable benefits for people". "Service delivery and transparency have been greatly boosted. Technology has become a means of empowering the lives of the poorest of the poor," he further said.
