MEI Micro partners with Steadman Philippon Research Institute in new technology development
The partnership will bring together MEI's expertise in next-generation MEMs inertial sensor technology and the deep subject matter expertise of SPRI, one of the world's leading Institutes of orthopaedics and sports medicine research. The focus will include the development of smart surgical tools, medical-grade wearables and motion capture systems for the assessment and continuous monitoring of patients, athletes and military personnel. These systems will feature MEI's proprietary 3DS MEMs platform technology which is 80x–100x more accurate than existing consumer- and industrial-grade MEMs inertial sensors currently in use in life science applications including consumer wearables like smart watches and rings.
"There is tremendous potential in this innovative partnership between MEI Micro and SPRI," shared Marc J. Philippon, MD, Managing Partner of The Steadman Clinic and Chairman of SPRI. "Harnessing MEI's technology will enable us to develop new products for surgical advancement while enhancing the patient's recovery experience through next-generation technology."
MEI Micro recently began shipping first commercial product samples of its industry first navigation-grade, multi-axis chip scale 3 degrees of freedom (DoF) MEMs accelerometer platform, which received the Most Innovative Product Award for MEMs at the 2024 Sensors Converge conference. At this year's event, CEO Louis Ross will present " Next Generation MEMS Inertial for Life Science Applications" and will review its plans to work closely with SPRI, which has a long history of developing leading-edge approaches to orthopaedic surgery and conducting research to support the care of some of the world's top professional athletes and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams.
"We look to democratize the use of high-accuracy inertial data", said Ross, which includes delivering the highest accuracy, lowest cost, size, weight and power (CSWaP) sensors to be put on the market. "The need for much higher accuracy has been accelerated due to the broad-spread application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, especially at the EDGE, which includes the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)." EDGE computing, also referred to as "TinyML", requires higher accuracy data in order to develop more efficient sensor fusion software and advanced algorithms that can become a catalyst for preventative, predictive and personalized healthcare and related assessments and medical treatments. MEMs inertial sensors also provide the ability to continuously track and monitor users, providing a key enabler for telemedicine/telehealth which will lead to lower costs for clinical trials and healthcare in general.
"SPRI's partnership with MEI Micro will result in the development of a portfolio of healthcare technological advancements," said Dan Drawbaugh, CEO of SPRI. "As SPRI expands its artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, there is a natural synergy with MEI Micro's technologies for precision-based solutions. We look forward to working with MEI Micro to change the shape of personalized healthcare on a global scale."
The organizations plan to develop new technology products, including targeted orthopaedic and sports medicine applications for individual joints, with the ultimate goal of advancing patient treatment, care and recovery.
MEI Micro, Inc. is a technology start up commercializing the world's first tactical to navigation grade capable, multi-axis, chip scale MEMs inertial sensor systems. Buffalo Sabres home arena to remain KeyBank Center after reaching 10-year naming rights extension
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres' home arena will continue being called the KeyBank Center after the two sides announced a 10-year naming rights extension on Wednesday. The new deal will kick in next year and run through 2035-36. The Cleveland-based bank has a large regional presence in Buffalo, and took over the downtown arena's naming rights after acquiring First Niagara Bank in 2016. As part of the extension, the bank's name will be featured on the Sabres' helmets for away games starting this season. The arena is undergoing a series of long-needed renovations since first opening in 1996. Last year, the Sabres replaced the roof and installed a new video scoreboard over center ice. The next series of renovations are expected to address upgrading the seats and fan amenities. The Sabres' control the building, which is also home to the three-time defending National Lacrosse League champion Bandits, and have placed an emphasis on adding more events since Pete Guelli took over as the team's chief operating officer last year. In November, the arena will host one of Paul McCartney's 20 North American tour stops, as well as host a pre-Olympic U.S. vs. Canada women's hockey Rivalry Series game. The Sabres, meanwhile, have been struggling on the ice with the team in the midst of an NHL-record 14-season playoff drought. Toronto man learns he won $60M lottery prize, then jumps into work call
A 26-year old software professional from Toronto won the $60 million jackpot in May's Lotto 6/49 Gold ball, and he credits two simple decisions for the once-in-a-lifetime win. Bocheng Mei secured his status as a multi-millionaire after signing up on and opting into a subscription which automatically enters him in each lottery draw. His second decisive move that led to his win was answering a phone call from an unknown number. Mei didn't realize he had won until an OLG representative called and asked him to check his account. Initially wary, Mei said he did some quick Googling to verify the call. 'I answered the call, and the person said they were from OLG,' he explained. 'They just asked me to check my account. That's when I discovered I had a winning ticket, and it said I'd won $60 million. My hands and feet went numb. Story continues below advertisement 'As soon as I got off the phone with OLG, I had to join a work meeting online and tried to play it cool. Inside, my feelings were all over the place.' 'I tried to be very calm when I told them I'd won a big prize,' he said. 'I reassured them they would never need to worry about money again. I told them they could retire and enjoy life. They were so shocked to hear the news.' For Mei, family is a priority. 'I can now change their lives along with my own,' he said. 'I can provide for them now and make so many things happen for all of us that were never possible before.' As he begins to plan his future, Mei has a list of goals he wishes to accomplish using the money, including buying a home, pursuing further education, and travelling the world. 'I love to learn, so I want to take advantage of various educational opportunities. I also want to explore different cultures, so that means plenty of travel. I really want to experience the aurora borealis as well, which may involve trips to Finland and Iceland,' he said.

SafeSport Center opens search for new CEO
The U.S. Center for SafeSport posted the opening for a new chief executive officer on Thursday, hoping to find a leader to steer the agency into a new era after several troubled years as a start-up. The center, a non-profit that opened in 2017 and is charged with handling sex-abuse cases in Olympic sports, hired consulting firm Korn Ferry to lead the search and work with a search committee made of center board members and advisors. 'This is more than a job search. It is a reflection of our values and the people we are accountable to — our staff, athletes, and the broader sport community,' said Board Vice Chair and search committee lead Chicka Elloy. April Holmes stepped away from her duties as board chair to serve as interim CEO in place of Ju'Riese Colon while the search takes place. The center parted ways with Colon in April, not long after Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, began querying the center when details emerged about its hiring of an investigator who would later be charged with rape. The center, which also opened a search for a new chief financial officer, said Korn Ferry 'is currently conducting organizational assessments and confidential outreach to identify candidates who exemplify both executive acumen and a people-first philosophy.' The job description said the center was looking for someone with a 'deep understanding of the sports ecosystem and/or experience working in fields related to abuse prevention, compliance, or athlete advocacy.' It said the targeted salary would be between $250,000-$300,000. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP sports:
