Nobody Does Land Yachts Like Cadillac, And These Are Five Of The Best Ones
Cadillac is one of America's oldest surviving car manufacturers at 123 years old, and it has built some of the most iconic cars in history since its inception in 1902. Six years into its existence and again in 1913, the burgeoning American automaker won the Dewar Trophy presented by the Royal Automobile Club of the U.K., earning Cadillac the slogan "the Standard of the World." A century has passed since Cadillac won those honors, and over that time the brand had some high points and some low points. Cadillac's ability to produce some of the most desirable cars in the world is undeniable, from the ultra-opulent Cadillac V16 of the roaring '20s to Elvis Presley's pink 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special, not to mention Ronald Reagan's 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood presidential limousine and the modern pop-culture fame enjoyed by the Cadillac Escalade. My favorite Cadillacs are the long, low and cushy sedans, coupes and convertibles that prioritized relaxed driving in hushed uncompromising comfort, affectionately referred to as land yachts.
Land yachts have fallen out of favor in the 21st century, or at least in the traditional sense. The land yachts of yore were symbols of excess, with both positive and negative connotations. They represented positive excess as opulent status symbols for the wealthy, but they also grew to represent negative excess as gas guzzling, clumsy handling, plastic chrome-adorned grandma's cars. However, large luxurious SUVs have replaced the traditional land yacht in the form of Cadillac's own Escalade, the Land Rover Range Rover, and even the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Mercedes-Maybach GLS. While the title of land yacht has gone away, classic Cadillac land yachts still set sail on modern roads each day, and these are some of Caddy's finest.

While many people may not know they envision a '59 Cadillac Coupe Deville when they picture a classic Cadillac, it's likely the model that comes to mind. This land yacht embodied America's 1950s infatuation with the space race, with what are widely regarded as the most dramatic tail fins of any production car. Beyond its futuristic looks it wasn't a particularly groundbreaking car, unless that ground was hollow because this big coupe would break right through. They're nearly 19 feet long and weighs almost 5,000 pounds.
As America shifted toward a suburban ideology and the highway system expanded, cars weren't constrained by concerns with maneuverability. The 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood grew to its longest length of 19.5 feet, and it was powered by a 500-cubic-inch 8.2-liter carbureted V8. This absolute barge is one of the finest land yachts ever produced, and I yearn to drive one at some point in my life.
As the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham served as the brand's four-door flagship, the Eldorado was the two-door coupe. Paring this beast down to two doors didn't make it sporty or small by any means, though. It shares the sedan's 8.2-liter V8, but it was about a foot shorter than the sedan at a trim 18.6 feet long. To contextualize, a modern Cadillac Escalade is about a foot shorter than the '74 Eldorado.
By the end of the 20th century, the full-size luxury sedan market was teeming with options like the Lexus LS400, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. These cars all provided comparable comfort, room, and opulence to the Fleetwood, while also providing superior performance and technology. The 1991 Fleetwood is on this list as it's the last bastion of the traditional Cadillac land yacht with hints of tail fins, sofa-like bench seats, and a big V8 under the hood driving the rear wheels. Times changed pretty quickly, and the land yacht fell out of favor among the young new generation of wealthy elites.
The Cadillac DTS marked the end of Cadillac's floaty, full-sized, V8-powered sedans. Its successor, the Cadillac XTS, ditched the V8 for smaller engines including a land yacht disqualifier, a sacrilegious turbocharged four-cylinder. The DTS was available with a front bench seat that made it a true six-seater sedan, and in true land yacht fashion, it prioritized ride comfort over handling prowess and comfy seats over sporty buckets. Few people lament the death of the land yacht, but I think that makes them just that much cooler.

Trump Signs Ban on California EV Rules, Sparking Nationwide Reactions
President Trump has signed congressional resolutions overturning California's ability to mandate electric vehicle (EV) sales and establish its tailpipe and emissions standards via a federal waiver. Trump's resolutions immediately halt California's 2035 ban on new gas-powered car sales-a plan adopted by 11 states and Washington, D.C. In total, 17 other states representing 30% of the U.S. auto market have adopted some or all of California's stricter vehicle emissions standards. California also won't be able to enforce an increase in zero-emission heavy-duty truck sales and a low-nitrogen oxide regulation for heavy-duty highway and off-road vehicles/engines. "Today we're saving California, and we're saving our entire country from a disaster," Trump said, according to The Hill. California's governor, Gavin Newsom, announced last month that his state would go to court to protect its federal waiver allowing its own clean air rules, claiming it exists outside of the Congressional Review Act's scope, which repealed the waiver. Now, Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington are among the states joining California's legal battle. In March, the Government Accountability Office said California's waivers can't be repealed under the Congressional Review Act, and the Senate parliamentarian had advised not moving forward with the act, making the Senate's decision to go against the parliamentarian extremely rare. Former President Biden's waiver allowed 80% of the new vehicles that California sells to be all-electric by 2035, with the rest being advanced plug-in hybrids. The mandate's ramp-up period included 35% of new 2026 model cars sold in the state being zero-emission, increasing to 68% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the Air Resources Board to craft another mandate for cars and trucks to either support its existing mandates or replace them in the case of a court loss. Newsom also instructed the board to create a public list of automakers and truck manufacturers following California's emissions rules and companies acting early to convert fleets to zero-emission trucks, "regardless of the status of those regulations under federal law," Cal Matters reports. While Trump's signings generated backlash, The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing General Motors, Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Stellantis, and other automakers, supported the president's decision, describing California's previous mandate as unachievable and something that would raise car prices. EPA spokesperson Molly Vaseliou said, "This is nothing more than California throwing a temper tantrum because the American people don't want the state's terrible policies," according to Reuters. More than a quarter of California's new car sales are EVs, with New Jersey and New York following at 15% and 12%, respectively, The Alliance for Automotive Innovation reports. Meeting California's EV mandates would've been challenging for automakers. Still, Congress's decision to block the state from setting its emissions standards sets off a domino effect that could significantly slow EV development throughout the country. Michael Gerrard, the founder of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, said: "The chief winners of this move are the oil industry and China. Electric vehicles are the main threat to the demand for oil, and this move further cements China as the global leader in producing electric vehicles," according to NBC. A decrease in EV adoption resulting from Congress's repeal could also pose health risks, as California stated its EV sales mandate would prevent around 1,300 cardiopulmonary deaths between 2026 and 2040. However, you may be curious to learn more about the exact features forming this exorbitant price tag, how it compares to competitors, and its track capabilities. We introduced you to the 2025 Mustang GTD on Thursday. Now, it's time for a deeper dive into this car's engineering, performance, and marketplace position. The 815-horsepower 2025 Mustang GTD's design emphasizes weight reduction, enhanced handling, and blazing speed with available forged magnesium wheels with a race-optimized strength-to-weight ratio, along with lightweight carbon fiber body panels, a carbon fiber driveshaft, and the available carbon fiber underbody aerodynamic tray. Even the titanium exhaust voicing the 5.2L V8 engine is ultralight, and handling benefits from front six-piston Brembo anti-lock brakes and 345 mm-wide rear high-performance summer road and track tires. Ford's 2025 Mustang GTD completed a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap in 6:57:685-the fifth-fastest time by a stock production sports car and only the sixth vehicle in its class to crack the iconic track's seven-minute lap barrier. The 2025 GTD is masterful on the track, but its dual ride height also lends itself to surface streets. This Ford features Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) technology with an advanced suspension system that includes adaptive dampers, allowing ride heights to vary by nearly 40mm (1.57 inches) with the press of a button. Comparable 2025 Ford Mustang GTD rivals include Lamborghini's Huracán STO, starting at $344,778, McLaren's 750S coupe with a base MSRP of around $324,000, and Ferrari's 296 GTB, which sells from $346,950. Lamborghini's Huracán STO falls short of the Mustang GTD's 825 max horsepower at 630, and it's more focused on pure driving instead of track runs, but it's also lighter than its Ford counterpart. McLaren's 750S coupe falls shy of the Mustang GTD's horsepower at 740, but it offers a 0-60 mph time about 0.3 seconds faster than its competitor. Ferrari's 296 GTB gives the Mustang GTD the best run for its money in terms of horsepower at 819, but some may not prefer its hybrid powertrain. You wouldn't be wrong to label the 2025 Mustang GTD's price tag as eye-watering, and its cost rises significantly with added options. This Ford enters supercar territory with exotic materials, dynamic engineering, and a robust powertrain, but it's also a car you can enjoy both on and off the track.
