Mets' Carlos Mendoza Announces Brett Baty News After Loss to Cardinals
The New York Mets lost both games of their doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, and have now lost four of their last five. Their lead atop the NL East has now shrank to 2.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets (22-13) lost the first game 6-5 and the second one 5-4 on Sunday. Outfielder Jesse Winker left with an oblique injury in the fourth inning of the first contest and was replaced by Mark Vientos, who started the second game at third base.

New York could use another left-handed bat in Winker's absence, and its fans are campaigning for infielder Brett Baty to get called back up from Triple-A Syracuse. However, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that the 25-year-old has his own health issues, via SNY.

"He's dealing with a sore big right toe, but I was told he was going through his workout yesterday and today, so we'll see," he said. "We'll have to check on that."
Baty is slashing .204/.246/.352 with one homer and four RBI in 19 big-league games this season.
New York drafted the 6-foot-3-inch, 210-pounder No. 12 overall in 2019 and called him up for the first time in 2022. He owns a career .214/.279/.328 slash line with 16 homers and 59 RBI in 188 games.

The Mets will finish their road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks before hosting the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, they'll hit the road to face the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
