Syrian Druze say govt mission of peace devolved into rampage
SWEIDA: The mainly Druze residents of the Syrian city of Sweida had hoped the arrival of government forces on Tuesday would spell an end to deadly sectarian clashes with local Bedouin tribes. Instead they spoke of executions, looting and arson as government troops and their allies rampaged through Druze neighborhoods, prompting thousands from the religious minority to flee. 'Government forces entered the city on the pretext of restoring order... but unfortunately they indulged in savage practices,' said Rayan Maarouf, editor in chief of the Suwayda 24 news website. 'There have been cases of civilians being killed... dozens of them... but we don't have precise figures,' he added, blaming government fighters and their allies. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, government forces executed 12 civilians in a guesthouse in the city, in just one incident among many said to have taken place in the area. Syria's defense minister had declared a 'complete ceasefire' in the city late Tuesday morning, but locals said the announcement had little effect on the ground. An AFP correspondent who entered Sweida shortly after government forces reported dead bodies left lying on deserted streets as sporadic gunfire rang out. 'I'm in the center of Sweida. There are executions, houses and shops that have been torched, and robberies and looting,' one Sweida resident holed up in his home told AFP by phone. 'One of my friends who lives in the west of the city told me that they entered his home, chased out his family after taking their mobile phones and then set fire to it,' added the resident, who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution. AFP correspondents saw smoke rising over several areas of the city of some 150,000 people. Another resident said he had seen armed men in civilian clothes 'looting shops and setting fire to them.' 'They're firing indiscriminately, I am afraid to leave the house,' he said, adding that he regretted 'not leaving before they arrived.' On Tuesday, government forces entered Sweida with the stated aim of ending the sectarian violence that had claimed more than 100 lives earlier this week. But the Observatory, Druze leaders and witnesses said they entered the city accompanied by Bedouin fighters, and joined with them in attacking the Druze. One AFP video showed Bedouin fighters riding through the streets on a government tank, brandishing their weapons in celebration. The fighters toppled several statues in public squares, AFP images showed. Hard-line Islamists believe such representations of the human form to be idolatrous. Unverified video footage circulating on social media showed armed men forcibly shaving off the moustache of an elderly Druze, a grave insult in the community. The Israeli military said it had carried out several air strikes on the forces that entered Sweida. An AFP correspondent saw one Syrian army vehicle in the city center that had taken a direct hit. Several bodies were left dangling over its sides. The Israeli military said it was acting to protect the Druze, although some analysts have said that was a pretext for pursuing its own military goals. Thousands of the city's residents fled, seeking safety nearer the Jordanian border, Maarouf said. In the nearby village of Walgha, an AFP correspondent found a group of displaced civilians sheltering in a mosque.

Environment Ministry Launches Major Water Management, Flood Mitigation Project
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) has signed a new contract for a comprehensive project focused on water resource development and flood risk mitigation. The initiative aims to optimize the use of ground and surface water, protect non-renewable groundwater sources, and support the broader goal of achieving national water security. Enhancing Water Resource Efficiency According to Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, Deputy Minister for Water at MEWA, the project forms a key part of the ministry's strategy to manage non-renewable water sources more effectively. This includes the regulation of drilling and production activities, promoting sustainable water use, identifying secure water sources, and supporting their long-term development. The initiative also seeks to expand the use of surface and renewable water through the adoption of international best practices. Technical Support The project will deliver integrated services across several areas. These include studies and designs for rainwater harvesting infrastructure such as dams, water barriers, and ponds. It will also cover valley and watershed studies, flood risk mitigation planning, and the review of existing studies. Ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and field reporting will ensure transparency and effectiveness throughout implementation. Water Management This initiative supports the objectives of the National Water Strategy by focusing on improved water demand management, higher usage efficiency, environmental conservation, and encouraging private sector involvement. It is a strategic step toward achieving the sustainability goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030. Israel Strikes Syrian Troops in Sweida to Shield Druze Community
Israel launched airstrikes against Syrian government forces in Sweida province on Tuesday as Jerusalem claimed the strikes protect the local Druze minority after Damascus had deployed troops there after clashes killed over 100 people. Israeli forces struck shortly after Syria's defence minister declared a ceasefire in Sweida city, following the Government forces' entry to the city earlier that morning. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the immediate strikes. A joint Israeli statement explained, 'We are acting to prevent the Syrian regime from harming them [Druze]. Israel will ensure the demilitarisation of the area adjacent to our border.' The Israeli military confirmed hitting military vehicles. Druze Reactions and Fragile Truce Most Druze leaders supported the Syrian troop deployment, with influential Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri calling for armed resistance. Druze representatives gathered at Sheikh Youssef Jarbouh's residence to discuss the ceasefire. Defence Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced the truce on X, stating, 'We declare a complete ceasefire after agreement with city notables,' adding forces would only respond to fire from outlaw groups. An AFP correspondent reported gunfire subsiding after the announcement with Government troops waving the Syrian flag atop a city roundabout. A curfew was planned for Sweida city to halt violence spreading across the governorate. Escalating Violence and Deep Divisions Syrian forces intervened after deadly clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes erupted Sunday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 116 deaths: 64 Druze (including 4 civilians) and 52 from government forces/tribes, though the defence ministry acknowledged 18 military deaths. Government forces said they aimed to separate warring sides. However, they took control of several Druze areas around Sweida. Tensions between Druze and Bedouin groups in Sweida are longstanding. Israel possesses its own Druze population, portraying itself as the minority's defender since Bashar al-Assad's overthrow. Jerusalem also refuses any Syrian military presence south of Damascus as analysts suggest Israel uses Druze protection as an intervention pretext. Damascus, recently engaged in talks with Israel, did not immediately comment on the strikes. The fighting underscores challenges facing interim leader Ahmad al-Sharaa. Short link : Post Views: 6
