Noel Tata's mother, woman behind Lakme, Simone in critical condition
Mumbai: Simone Tata, the mother of Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, is in critical condition at the Breach Candy Hospital, sources with direct knowledge of the matter told TOI. She was airlifted from Dubai to Mumbai on Monday and is under the care of doctor Farokh Udwadia. Simone, 95, is battling symptoms of Parkinson's, the same illness that her stepson and former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata passed away from last October. "She and Noel arrived in Mumbai from Dubai on a medical plane at Terminal 8," sources said. Simone is most famous for turning the Lakmé cosmetic brand into a household name in India. The name Lakmé comes from the French word for Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, in Hindu mythology. The Tata Group was urged by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to launch a makeup brand as Indian women were spending valuable foreign reserves on Western makeup brands. Lakmé was established by the Tata Group in 1952. During her visit, she met Naval Tata, who was 26 years her senior and divorced from his first wife Soonoo. They fell in love, got married in 1955, and she decided to make Mumbai her permanent home. In 1996, the Tata Group sold Lakmé to Hindustan Unilever as part of a restructuring strategy. Simone used the proceeds to create Westside, a popular department store. She managed the Tata Group's consumer-facing businesses including Lakme and Trent (which owns Westside and Star India Bazaar stores) for over four decades until her retirement in 2006. She also served on the board of Tata Industries, an investment company within the group. After her retirement, Simone made fewer public appearances. She was last seen at Ratan Tata's funeral in Oct 2024. Following his passing, her son Noel took over his position at Tata Trusts, the driving force behind the $180-billion Tata Group. Naidu to inaugurate Ratan Tata Innovation Hub today
Vijayawada: Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the Ratan Tata Innovation Hub (RTIH), the first govt-led incubator, on Wednesday. Tata Group chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran and IT minister Nara Lokesh will also attend the event. The vision behind RTIH is to create a platform where ideas become enterprises, young people become job creators instead of job seekers, and villages lead innovation. While Amaravati will be the central node of the RTIH, positioning itself as a hub for deep tech, AI, sustainability, and inclusive innovation, five spokes will be set up at Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Tirupati, and Anantapur. The RTIH will support startups in incubation, IPR support, skill acceleration, digital transformation, and innovation. It will integrate statewide digital infrastructure such as real-time governance and Mana Mitra services. Each RTIH spoke will be managed through a non-profit entity, governed by corporate partners and academia, with govt playing the role of a catalyst to build a democratically decentralised model. The RTIH has adopted global best practices like Israel's decentralised incubation networks, Finland's innovation clusters, Singapore's innovation economy, and the UK's catapult centres for applied research and development. Simone Tata admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital
Mumbai: Simone Tata, the 95-year-old mother of Noel Tata and stepmother of the late Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata, has been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai following a severe illness. Tata was flown to Mumbai on Tuesday after receiving initial treatment at King's Hospital, Dubai. She has a buildup of fluid in her lungs but is in stable condition, according to a source familiar with her health. 'She has admitted under the care of senior doctor Farokh E. Udwadia,' the source added. Simone Tata has a rich legacy as a businesswoman, having steered brands such as Lakmé in India before its sale to Hindustan Unilever in the 1990s. Born Simone Naval Dunoyer in Geneva, Switzerland, she came to India as a tourist in 1953. She married Naval H. Tata in 1955 and began her career with the group in the 1960s. Her journey with the Tata Group began on the board of Lakmé. At the time, Lakmé was a minor subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills (TOMCO), selling personal-care brands such as Hamam, Okay and Modi soaps. It was Simone who shaped the brand's vision to cater to the Indian woman's need for indigenous cosmetics. Under her leadership, the brand became a household name in India and she was appointed chairperson in 1982. She is known as the "cosmetics czarina of India" for her role in popularising cosmetics among Indian women. After the Indian economy was liberalised, HUL and Lakmé Ltd formed a 50:50 joint venture, Lakmé Unilever Limited in 1996 to market Lakmé's cosmetics and other appropriate products from both companies. In 1998 Lakmé Ltd sold its brands to HUL and divested its 50% stake in the joint venture for ₹ 200 crore. Lakmé decided to transition from the cosmetics business to apparel retail, given the absence of established brands in most categories. To this end, it acquired Littlewoods International (India) from Littlewoods International Ltd, UK, in March 1998. From 1 July 1998, Trent Ltd was amalgamated with Lakmé, and the name of Lakmé Ltd was officially changed to Trent Ltd, which now sells clothing through Zudio and Westside stores.
