Video played during guilty plea showing efforts of first responders to save girl's life after crash
The family of Victoria Desjardins sobbed in court as an officer's body-worn camera video was played as part of Duane Nepoose's guilty plea.
Nepoose admitted to stealing a minivan, fleeing police and causing the crash that left Desjardins dead and seven others — including her mother and older sister — injured.
Nepoose, 30, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, robbery and fleeing a police officer.
An agreed statement of facts detailing the crime was read in by prosecutor Todd Buziak.
Court heard that on the morning of Dec. 24, 2024, Nepoose entered a pharmacy, punched the pharmacist, took the man's car keys and then stole his minivan.
The pharmacy owner called 911. About 20 minutes later, police spotted the stolen minivan.
Officers tried to pull him over but Nepoose sped away, blowing through red lights.
Calgary police's HAWC helicopter began following Nepoose in the stolen vehicle, which reached speeds of 170 kilometres per hour.
Video from the helicopter was also played as part of the plea.
It showed Nepoose driving dangerously, speeding, blowing through red lights and weaving through traffic in the city's deep south. Ultimately, he ended up on Macleod Trail.
At the Southland Drive intersection, Nepoose blew through another red light, this time crashing into several vehicles, including a Pontiac Vibe driven by Amanda Reitmeier, whose two daughters were also in the car.
Video from tactical team Const. Hovdebo's body-worn camera was also played in court, showing the officer pulling Nepoose out of the damaged minivan. The offender was placed face down on the pavement and handcuffed by other officers.
Hovdebo then ran to the Vibe, wrenching open the back door.
In the back seat, with deployed airbags filling much of the car, Victoria sat, unconscious, wearing a pink and purple sweatsuit.
Hovdebo can be seen checking for a pulse. When he didn't find one, he gently lifted the child out of the car and placed her on the ground, beginning CPR.
Eventually, the footage shows a firefighter taking over.
Hovdebo heads to other vehicles to check on victims. His body-worn camera footage shows a chaotic scene of smashed cars, first responders, injured victims and passers-by, trying to help.
When he returns to the Vibe, Amanda Reitmeier can be heard wailing.
Both Reitmeier and her older daughter Madison Desjardins, 12, were badly injured.
Reitmeier suffered a fractured pelvis, liver contusions and spinal fractures. She remained in hospital for two weeks.
Madison suffered a fractured vertebrae and a Grade 3 concussion.
Despite the efforts of first responders and doctors who performed surgery on Victoria, the girl died eight hours after the crash.
Both parents were by her side.
Justice Indra Maharaj will hear sentencing arguments from defence lawyers Rebecca Snukal and Sam Taylor and prosecutor Todd Buziak at a later date.

'So my only thing is, I want to be more — not just only for myself, for my family, my fans. I overly appreciate y'all supporting me and showing up, and even holding me accountable to being my best self. So more than anything, I refuse to run away … but face everything that comes to me head-on because everything on the other side is greater, but you gotta go through in order to get there,' she continued. 'I'm Sha'Carri y'all. I appreciate y'all. One love. Much love. Y'all be blessed.' On Tuesday morning, she followed the video message with words directed to Coleman. 'I apologize to Christian,' she declared. 'He came into my life and gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I've experienced in my past. Due to my past trauma and pain. I was blind and blocked off to not only receive it but give it.' The message continued to read, 'I love him and to him I can't apologize enough. My apologize should be as loud as my actions, honestly louder. To Christian, I love you and I am so sorry.' After news broke of the arrest, Coleman immediately offered support for Richardson. As previously reported, he declined to press charges and informed police officers that he did not want to be considered a victim. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all around,' Coleman explained. 'I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean, people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that. She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy, and love.' 'I hate the narrative, too. It's so negative… She's a human being and a great person. We've been able to be really good teammates all year… She's to me, she's the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day.' In surveillance footage from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Richardson is seen shoving Coleman near a TSA Checkpoint, which resulted in law enforcement intervening. Following the incident, she was taken into custody and held for nearly 19 hours at the SCORE South Correctional Facility in Des Moines, Washington. VIBE has reached out to Richardson's team for a statement. Who Are The Potential Witnesses In Drake's Lawsuit Against UMG?
Drake's witness list in his active lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) could be as stacked as his three-day performance at Wireless Festival 2025. Court documents have revealed every entity the Canadian rapper could potentially call to the stand in relation to his accusations that the music corporation purposely defamed him in its alleged promotion of Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us.' In the amended 'initial disclosure' document viewed by VIBE, more than 60 people or companies are listed by Drake and his legal team as those who may have testimony that support his claims. As noted in the filing, 'disclosures do not include persons whose testimony is likely to be used solely for impeachment, rebuttal, or expert witness testimony.' The full list named executives from Interscope, Jesse Collins of Roc Nation, Avery Lipman, PresidentRepublic Records, as well as the companies Amazon Music, the NFL, Apple Inc., Instagram, and various media outlets. Drake himself is also named as a potential witness in the landmark litigation. Also listed is Kojo Menne Asamoah, who is described as having knowledge of the Defendant's use of covert tactics to promote the defamatory material. An additional document filed included a motion to subpoena Asamoah as a 'relevant witness.' 'Based on the information available to Plaintiff today, Plaintiff believes that Mr. Asamoah possesses knowledge relating to UMG's use of covert tactics to promote the Defamatory Material, including because Plaintiff believes that Mr. Asamoah was involved in directing payments and/or financial incentives from UMG to third parties involved in online botting for the purpose of artificially inflating the streaming numbers of the Recording,' detailed the filing. 'Plaintiff believes that Mr. Asamoah engaged in this behavior through and/or in connection with his relationship with Ramon Alvarez-Smikle, the Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Marketing of UMG's Interscope Records. Mr. Alvarez-Smikle is listed as a witness on both Plaintiff's and UMG's initial disclosures.' In its initial disclosures, UMG has a shorter list of potential witnesses, with Kendrick Lamar named as 'likely to have discoverable information concerning the creation of the Recording, Image and Video, and the distribution and promotion of the Recording and Video.' Although named in the court documents, no person or company listed is guaranteed to be called to the witness stand if the case makes it to trial. 'UMG is desperate to see this case not move forward because the company can't hide its misconduct in a courtroom the way it does in the boardroom,' shared a statement from representatives for the Certified Lover Boy earlier this month. 'Soon, in addition to facing concerned regulators and investors, the leadership of music's most powerful label will have to answer for the damage it has caused to every artist that has been silenced, exploited, endangered or discarded.' Dad's 'world fell apart' as wife and daughter killed by callous BMW driver who fled crash
A dad who lost his wife and daughter in an horrific Christmas crash caused by a "racing" BMW driver said his world had fallen apart. George Philips said he felt "empty" after reckless after the Boxing Day tragedy, which was caused by a driver who lost control and fled after doing up to 84mph - almost three times the speed limit - as he raced another car. Four generations of the same family were in an MG hit by Mohammed Ibrahim's BMW 420 in Shard End on December 26, 2023. But instead of trying to help, callous Ibrahim, 25, was heard saying: "I need to go" before he turned up at Heartlands Hospital for treatment. In a statement read to the court as the motorist was sentenced today, Wednesday, July 16, Mr Philips said: "Our family are the centre of our world. The aftermath (of the crash) was the complete devastation of my family. 'My wife and daughter had both died. My world fell apart. I felt an immense emptiness.' His wife and daughter were both hard-working, doted on their families and would help anyone, Mr Philips added. The court heard Ibrahim had been travelling 'in convoy' with a BMW X3 at up to 84mph in a 30mph zone. His car crashed into a quad bike and then hit the MG. The women both died at the scene. Four other family members in the MG suffered injuries, including a fractured sternum, a broken leg requiring surgery and bruising to the lungs. Philip Vollans, prosecuting, said the victims were travelling home from family celebrations on the evening of Boxing Day 2023. Before showing video footage to the sentencing judge of Ibrahim's car speeding past a bus towards the crash site on Meadway, at its junction with Kitts Green Road, Mr Vollans said the driver of the BMW X3 had never been traced. Mr Vollans said of the two BMWs: 'Both cars were speeding, both cars racing each other. 'The defendant was the faster driver of the two.' Estimating that Ibrahim was speeding for at least half a mile before the 'tremendous' impact, reaching 80-84mph, Mr Vollans added that the defendant initially hit a quad bike, which had run a red light, and lost control while in the wrong lane. Ibrahim, of Old College Road, Sheldon, then hit the kerb of the central reservation and crashed into the family's car as it slowed down on the opposite carriageway. The driver's seat of the MG was knocked out of its fixings and it caught fire, leaving its occupants trapped as a member of the public attempted to free them. A witness saw Ibrahim, who was saying 'I need to go', lying on the ground near the driver's side of the BMW before he left the scene. His car was also on fire following the crash, the court heard. The court heard Ibrahim was caught on CCTV at Heartlands, where he was treated for a leg injury, and he later returned to the scene, where he was arrested but refused a breath test. Mr Vollans added: 'Both cars were completely destroyed as a consequence of this collision.' Three relatives of the victims, including the driver of the car, read victim impact statements to the court, with one describing those killed as having 'died fighting for their lives, lying on a cold roadside, scared and in tremendous pain'. Defence barrister Jasvir Mann, offering mitigation, told the court that Ibrahim had no previous convictions and there was ample evidence, including references, that he had 'led a thoroughly positive life'. Mr Mann said: 'My instructions are that he has no meaningful memory of that day.' The actions of the quad bike rider, who also left the scene and has never been identified, had contributed to what happened, Mr Mann added. Ibrahim pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The defendant was due to be sentenced by Judge Paul Farrer KC later on Wednesday.
