AtkinsRéalis signs new execution contract for Darlington Small Modular Reactor Project

Yahoo5 days ago

MONTREAL, May 28, 2025 /CNW/ - Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company [AtkinsRéalis Group Inc.] (TSX: ATRL), has been awarded a $450 million execution contract by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), for the first of four planned small modular reactor (SMR) units at the Darlington New Nuclear Project. The 300-megawatt BWRX-300 small modular reactor being delivered for OPG in Durham Region, east of Toronto, will supply enough power for 300,000 homes.1
AtkinsRéalis is providing OPG with expertise for the engineering of the SMR. This includes project management, licensing, engineering, design, procurement, construction support and commissioning, as well as digital delivery capabilities in both the nuclear island and balance of plant scopes for the project.
"As a world-class engineering services and nuclear organization, we are advocates for the role of SMRs in the energy mix to create stable, affordable, and reliable power grids," said Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer, AtkinsRéalis. "Our involvement in the G7's first grid-scale SMR and Canada's first nuclear new build in roughly 30 years reaffirms our leading position in the global nuclear energy market, for both large and small reactor technologies. Our trusted relationship with OPG supporting hydropower assets and refurbishing CANDU reactors at Darlington and Pickering will support this project's successful completion by 2030."
AtkinsRéalis has been the architect-engineer on the Darlington New Nuclear Project alliance team since 2023. The Company is working alongside GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Aecon Kiewit Nuclear Partners. The site preparation work undertaken under an earlier validation phase contract has been completed on time and on budget. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has issued a license to construct the SMR, and the Ontario government has also given its final approval for construction of the first of four planned units at the site.
"AtkinsRéalis is a long-time trusted partner to OPG, including on the on-time, on budget Darlington Refurbishment Project," said Nicolle Butcher, OPG President and CEO. "We will draw on our shared experience for similar success as we build the first small modular reactor in the G7 at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site."
"Ontario's power demand is expected to surge by 75% by 20502 and we'll need all sources of cleaner power to meet the need, including large and small nuclear reactor technology," said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. "Together with our alliance partners, we will ensure Canada continues to lead the G7 in advancing the use of SMR technology, as AtkinsRéalis also continues to support international SMR projects in the UK, US, and Poland."

Analysts assess the potential impact of Trump's surprise 50% steel tariffs

-- U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced on Friday that steel and aluminum tariffs will double to 50%. The move, set to come into effect on June 4, was unveiled during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. It was later confirmed on TruthSocial and comes amid broader debates around U.S. industrial policy and foreign investment. Analysts are now evaluating the implications of this surprise decision, with most agreeing that the immediate domestic effects may be less severe than the broader geopolitical risks. JPMorgan's Tatsuya Maruyama said the direct impact on major Japanese steelmakers such as Nippon Steel Corp (TYO:5401), JFE Holdings, Inc. (TYO:5411), and Kobe Steel, Ltd. (TYO:5406) is expected to be limited, given that 'the U.S. accounts for about 4% of Japan's steel exports.' Maruyama pointed out in a Monday note that Nippon Steel and JFE export only about 1% of their total shipments to the U.S., while Kobe Steel exports about 3%. Still, he warned that 'rising global protectionism' is a growing concern, noting that a wave of anti-dumping measures and safeguards in regions like South Korea, the EU, and India could further strain global trade dynamics. 'If such countermeasures gain momentum, Japanese steel products may also be targeted and the export environment may worsen,' Maruyama continued. Meanwhile, analysts at BMO Capital Markets believe the sudden tariff hike could jolt domestic markets. 'The doubling of import tariffs, if maintained, is likely to create a panic in the market and trigger a restocking cycle that in our view has the potential to push prices >$1,000/st in the near-term,' the analysts said. However, they believe the spike would be temporary given macro uncertainty and seasonal demand trends. The broker upgraded Nucor (NYSE:NUE) to Outperform but downgraded Algoma Central (TSX:ALC), which it called 'a relative tariff loser.' The aluminum market may be more exposed, according to BMO. The U.S. covers only about 20% of its own aluminum consumption domestically, making it more vulnerable to supply disruptions. 'If tariffs do double, this is expected to put material upside pressure on the Midwest premium (MWP),' BMO wrote, estimating it could reach '$0.75/lb-plus' in theory, although higher aluminum cost will likely weigh on demand and thus offset some upside pressure. That said, the brokerage sees Century Aluminum (NASDAQ:CENX) as well positioned to benefit from a rise in the Midwest premium, while Alcoa (NYSE:AA) could see a negative impact of $1–2 per share, or 4–7%, due to its reliance on Canadian production. Still, BMO expects Alcoa may redirect some of its Canadian output to the EU market. SolGold PLC Announces Voluntary Delisting from Toronto Stock Exchange

BISHOPSGATE, LONDON / ACCESS Newswire / June 2, 2025 / SolGold plc (LSE:SOLG)(TSX:SOLG) announces that it has applied for a voluntary delisting of its ordinary shares from the Toronto Stock Exchange (the 'TSX'). The delisting is intended to be effective as of the close of trading on June 18, 2025. The ordinary shares in the Company will continue to trade on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange (the 'LSE') under the symbol 'SOLG'. Since SolGold obtained its TSX listing in 2017 to April 30, 2025, while daily trading activity in the Company's ordinary shares on such exchange increased somewhat, it only accounted for less than 3% of the aggregate trading volume on both platforms. As a result of these relatively low trading volumes on the TSX, the Company believes that the financial costs and administrative requirements associated with maintaining its TSX listing are no longer justified. Shareholder approval is not required for the delisting because the Company's ordinary shares trade on the LSE, which is an acceptable alternative market in accordance with Section 720(b) of the TSX Company Manual. Additional Information for Shareholders on SolGold's Canadian Registrar Following the delisting from the TSX, Canadian shareholders holding shares with their broker ('CDS participant') and wishing to trade their shares on the LSE will need for such shares to be made eligible to be transferred and settled through CREST, the United Kingdom ('UK') based share transfer and settlement system. CDS participants may initiate instructions to Computershare Trust Company of Canada ('Computershare') via its xSettle web service. Shares cannot be transferred and settled through CREST until a shareholder's CDS participant broker or the shareholder initiates a cross-border request. If the shares are held in certificated or Direct Registration form, as applicable, shareholders may instruct Computershare to arrange for the shares to be held by a CREST participant broker. This can be done by completing a 'Register Removal Request - Canada to United Kingdom' form, with valid CREST participant account details, and submitting such form to Computershare via email at [email protected]. For any questions on this process please contact Computershare's global transaction unit by phone at +1 (877) 624-5999. The Company intends to maintain CDS eligibility for its shares until July 18, 2025 in order to allow Canadian shareholders time to complete the process contemplated above. Trump ally Senator Graham pushes for new sanctions against Russia ahead of G7 Summit

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime ally of US President Donald Trump, has announced his intention to push for the introduction of new sanctions against Russia ahead of the G7 summit, which will take place from 15 to 17 June in Canada. Source: Bloomberg Details: In a joint statement with Democrat Richard Blumenthal, he stressed that the sanctions should be imposed by mid-June to send a clear signal to China and other countries helping the Kremlin circumvent international restrictions. "By the G7 summit, we hope to have sanctions put in place – in coordination with Europe – to deliver an unequivocal message to China," they said after talks in Paris with French officials. Graham and Blumenthal noted that their sanctions bill against Russia, which provides for the introduction of a 500% tariff on imports from countries that buy Russian energy resources, has been supported by 82 senators. "Russia indiscriminately kills men, women and children. It's time for the world to act decisively against Russia's aggression by holding China and others accountable for buying cheap Russian oil that props up Putin's war machine. If you want this war to end, push China to help end it," Graham wrote on X (Twitter). Quote from Bloomberg: "It's still unclear whether Trump, who has been pushing for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, is ready to embrace tougher action against Moscow. But in recent days, Trump has been expressing new frustration with President Vladimir Putin." [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda doesn't recognise Putin as president – ed.] Details: Graham and Blumenthal also held a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. "We assured President Macron and his team that we believe Putin is playing games regarding peace and is actually preparing for a military offensive in the late summer or early fall," they said. Background: Graham expects the upper house of Congress to begin considering new large-scale sanctions against Russia as early as this week due to the lack of progress in achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine. As for the lower house of Congress, whose consent will also be needed to approve the new sanctions, Graham said there are "House members that are ready to move in the House, and you'll see congressional action". The senators have regularly issued threats of what they describe as "bone-crushing" sanctions against Russia, although these have not yet been implemented. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
