Anne Burrell's heartbreaking gesture to Worst Cooks in America co-star before shock death at 55

Daily Mail5 days ago
Anne Burrell made a poignant gesture to her Worst Cooks in America co-star before her shock death aged 55.
Last month Burrell, who hosted Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and co-hosted Worst Cooks, was found dead inside her Brooklyn apartment and 'surrounded by pills'.
Her cause of death was confirmed as suicide this week.
Ahead of the airing of her final TV appearance on Worst Cooks in America: Talented and Terrible on July 28, her co-host Gabe Bertaccini opened up about her final gift to him when filming wrapped.
He told TV Insider of his final meet with Burrell: 'It was the finale. Everyone is tired. Weeks and weeks have gone by. We are celebrating the end of the shoot, and I get really sick. I had this cold. I felt like crap. We go through the production meeting and Anne hands me this card. It said, 'I hope you feel better.'
'In the card, there is this cute little heart that she crocheted. She loved to knit. She would do that while waiting for shooting time. This was relaxing to her. The night before she got the car. I still have it. It was such a beautiful gesture and completely unnecessary. That's exactly who Anne was. There was no ego or competition.
'Someone to take a little bit of her time to do something like that for her cohost, it's special. It's a great memory that I'll be taking with me.'
He added of the 'generous' star: 'Anne was just Anne throughout the show, after the show, at dinner, texting, or whatever. There was an authenticity that came with Anne. There are hundreds of people who work on this. They will tell you she was just authentically her. I loved her. '
According to the New York City medical examiner's office, Burrell's cause of death was listed as 'acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.'
Diphenhydramine and cetirizine are both antihistamines, ethanol is a type of alcohol, and amphetamine is a stimulant often prescribed for ADHD.
Burrell's family declined the publication's request for comment.
The Food Network star was found 'in the shower unconscious and unresponsive surrounded by approximately (100) assorted pills', according to NYPD documents seen by The New York Times.
Emergency medical teams responded to the home that she shared with her husband Stuart Claxton but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
On June 20, a spokeswoman for the city's medical examiner's office confirmed that Burrell's autopsy had been completed but findings on the exact cause of her death was still pending.
Claxton reportedly last saw his wife alive at about 1AM the night prior before discovering her unconscious between six to seven hours later in their bathroom.
He told TV Insider of his final meet with Burrell: 'It was the finale. Everyone is tired. Weeks and weeks have gone by. We are celebrating the end of the shoot, and I get really sick. Anne hands me this card. It said, 'I hope you feel better.'
It was reported earlier this week that EMS crews had attempted CPR on Burrell but could not resuscitate her.
Her family said in a statement: 'Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered.
'Anne's light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.'
A Food Network spokesperson added, 'Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent – teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring.
'Our thoughts are with Anne's family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.'
Just hours before her passing Burrell had performed a improv show at a comedy club in Brooklyn, after having taken classes at the venue's training center.
In a podcast earlier this year she spoke with Tori Spelling on taking the classes and how she planned to expand her horizons.
She said: 'I just started taking acting classes. I started yesterday, actually... It's like an improv for actors' class.
'I got there and it's like eight people in the class. I'm the oldest one. Every other person has like, 'Oh, I have a master's in fine arts in theater.''
Burrell showed off her self-awareness and sense of humor that her fans were familiar with as she joked about the age gap between she and her fellow students.
She said: 'I'm like, 'okay, I've never taken an acting class. I don't know, this is new to me.'
'I wonder if these delightful and super talented kids look at me and they're like, 'What's this old lady doing here?''
The television personality had taken a break from her show Worst Cooks In America for season 28 which baffled many fans and Spelling, 52, asked at the time what led her to that decision.
Burrell answered: 'I can cook, yes, I can do TV, but also, what else? I've got more to do in my life, I feel like.'
She also admitted that she was just 'dipping my toe' when it came to the pivot to acting.
Burrell explained: 'I feel very excited about it. I've got a few other things that I'm working on as well, which I'm not quite ready to share yet. Hopefully, exciting [are] things coming.'
Gigi Hadid, who famously appeared on the cooking competition series Beat Bobby Flay with Burrell, led the celebrities expressing their heartbreak over Burrell's death.
'I am heartbroken to hear of the loss of the Great Anne Burrell,' the supermodel, 30, began.
Hadid included a photo of herself and Burrell from their time filming Beat Bobby Flay back in 2023.
'As a longtime fan, getting to share this day with her was a dream come true. Beat Bobby. Hang. Eat,' she recalled.
'I wish we could have done it again. She was awesome. Rest in Peace Legend.'
Chef Carla Hall, who previously appeared on Food Network's Top Chef, called Burrell an 'incredible cook and teacher.'
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star Carson Kressley, who was a close friend of Burrell's, revealed that he spoke to her just days before her death.
He also shared a post to his own Instagram page which included a photo of him and Burrell.
'Rest easy, Chef Anne. I'm so blessed I was able to work with you, learn from you, laugh with you.
'So many memories - on screen and off - I cherish this photo of us living our best lives, as the kids say,' Kressley wrote.
The TV chef - who became synonymous with her trademark spiky platinum hair - is survived by husband, whom she wed in October 2021 in an autumn-themed ceremony and reception in her hometown of Cazenovia, New York.
She is also survived by her mother Marlene and sister Jane and her children Isabella, Amelia and Nicolas, and her brother Ben.
Burrell developed a passion for cooking at a young age, inspired by her mother's home-cooked meals and by watching food icon Julia Child on television.
After earning a degree in English and Communications from Canisius College in Buffalo in 1991, she followed her culinary dreams and enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, graduating in 1996.
She worked at a whole host of New York City hotspots including Felidia and Savoy in Soho, where she honed her craft in Mediterranean cuisine.
She was later thrust into the spotlight and became best known as the longtime host of Worst Cooks in America.
The show, which ran for 28 seasons, saw celebrated chefs mentor amateur cooks in an attempt to transform them from rookies to kitchen experts.
Elsewhere, she appeared on Chef Wanted, Chopped, Food Network Star, and most recently, competition series House of Knives - which premiered in March this year.
She also penned two of her own cookbooks - Cook Like a Rock Star and Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire & Empower.

Live Nation to speed up purchase of additional 24% Ocesa stake as Mexico live music market grows

July 29 (Reuters) - Live Nation Entertainment (LYV.N), opens new tab said on Tuesday it will accelerate the purchase of an additional 24% stake in Mexican concert promoter Ocesa, as Mexico becomes a prominent market for live music events. The investment will give Live Nation greater control over the Mexican market, where concert attendance has more than tripled since 2019, reflecting the country's growing economic importance in the global entertainment industry. The New York-listed entertainment giant will acquire the stake from Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE) ( opens new tab, which will retain a 25% holding in Ocesa. The deal also extends Ocesa CEO Alejandro Soberón's contract through 2032. The transaction will provide CIE with proceeds exceeding 12 billion Mexican pesos ($641.03 million), which it may use to pay down debt and fund working capital needs. Live Nation's expanded ownership comes as Mexico's live music sector has experienced rapid growth. The partnership between Live Nation's global infrastructure and Ocesa's local market expertise has created more opportunities for international artists to perform in Mexico while expanding fan access to live entertainment. Mexico's live music boom has been driven by increased disposable income among younger demographics and a surge in international touring following the pandemic recovery. The expanded partnership positions Ocesa to book more major global acts while Live Nation gains deeper access to Latin America's fastest-growing entertainment market. The deal is expected to close by the end of next month, pending CIE shareholder approval. Live Nation acquired a 51% controlling stake in Ocesa Entretenimiento in 2021, purchasing 40% from Grupo Televisa and 11% from CIE. ($1 = 18.7200 Mexican pesos)

Anne Burrell's devastated fans slam 'embarrassing' tribute on Worst Cooks in America after chef's shock death

The Food Network's tribute to the late Anne Burrell has been branded an 'embarrassment' and a 'slap in the face' by outraged fans. Burrell died by suicide at the age of 55 on June 17, and on July 27 the channel honored her during the premiere of her final season as a mentor in Worst Cooks in America: Talented and Terrible. At the end of the episode, a tribute message read: 'In Memoriam, Anne Burrell, 1969-2025.' 'If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available,' another note read. 'Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or chat at Burrell's furious fans were disappointed by the 'five second' tribute due to it airing at 10pm and questioned why it could not have been scheduled for earlier in the day. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one furiously penned: 'Chef Burrell deserves more than a tribute beginning at 10pm. Surely you can shelve the endless hours of Triple D and Triple G that clog up your lineup for a more comprehensive tribute.' Another scorned: 'At 10pm when no one is really watching. Great idea!' 'Wow a single day starting at 10pm? Complete disrespect,' slammed a third. Another wrote: '10pm? Why not earlier in the day? Didn't she start with Batali and Iron Chef? You could run Secrets of a Restaurant Chef most of the day. That was a great show.' 'Whoever came up with the 10pm timeslot should be fired,' quipped a fifth. 'What an embarrassment and slap in the face.' A sixth posted: 'Just watched Worst Cooks in America and it was kinda weird they had a five-second tribute to Anne Burrell at the end. I had expected they would open the show with some acknowledgment that she had died.' 'A little bittersweet watching this knowing it's Anne's last season but a little shocked they had nothing at the beginning of the episode mentioning her passing or dedicating the season to her?' added a seventh. Victoria Beckham seemingly snubs Brooklyn's wife Nicola again amid family feud

VICTORIA Beckham has seemingly snubbed eldest son Brooklyn's wife Nicola Peltz as the famous family's feud rumbles on. The fashion designer's Instagram behaviour has been put under the spotlight shortly after she appeared to intervene in the high-profile clash to offer an olive branch. 7 Victoria Beckham has seemingly snubbed her eldest son Brooklyn's wife Nicola Peltz Credit: Instagram 7 She has liked Brooklyn's Instagram posts in July in an apparent attempt to end their family feud Credit: Instagram 7 Yet Posh Spice failed to like any uploads featuring Bates Motel actress Nicola Credit: Instagram 7 The pair have been embroiled in the Beckham family feud after failing to attend David's 50th birthday celebrations Credit: Instagram Nicola, 30, and Brooklyn, 26, have reportedly been keeping their distance from his family, after they failed to attend dad David's 50th birthday party. Chef and photographer Brooklyn has continued to gush over his actress spouse throughout - despite "cutting off brothers Cruz and Romeo" in the drama - amid fears he's "obsessed" with his marriage. Victoria then confirmed neither Nicola or Brooklyn would feature in her upcoming documentary - in suggestions of another snub. Yet after 'liking' budding photographer and chef's recent Instagram reel, the mum of four, 51, has followed up with approval for more of his snaps. Yet in a cryptic move, while she has hit the heart button on images featuring him, those that also included Lola star Nicola have been left un-liked. Through July, she has liked every one of Brooklyn's posts - but only if they do not feature his actress spouse. Yet this may be because the busy fashion designer had missed a handful of his uploads. Neither Nicola or Brooklyn have returned the favour and approved her uploads. Nicola was previously accused of "controlling" husband Brooklyn - who frequently gushes over his spouse on social media. Meanwhile, Victoria and Nicola reportedly fell out in the run-up to Nicola's marriage to Brooklyn in 2022 in a row over Posh not designing the wedding dress. Brooklyn Beckham unfollows his brothers just hours after reaching out to sister Harper on her birthday The daughter of US billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz ended up walking down the aisle at her family's mansion in Miami in a gown by Italian fashion legend Valentino. SHOW SNUB? Fans recently suspected A Mind Of It's Own singer had dealt another snub to the pair after it was confirmed they would be a no show for her new series. Spice Girl singer Victoria's long-awaited Netflix programme is due for release in October. It is understood she will not touch on the simmering feud with her eldest and his spouse - although she has promised there will be 'tears' in the four-parter. The Sun can also confirm how Nicola and Brooklyn will not be in Victoria's upcoming show - but that is because no scenes were filmed with them. A source added to us: 'The children hardly feature — it's simply not a case of Brooklyn and Nicola being cut, as they weren't in it to start with. "This is very much a project focussing on Victoria's transaction from pop star to businesswoman and designer." The Sun has learned that Victoria comes across 'brilliantly' - continuing from her scene-stealing one-liners in David's own four-parter. OLIVE BRANCH The Sun was first to report how pop legend Elton John said his piece to his godson Brooklyn on the family difficulties during a swanky lunch. The legendary singer, 78, has publicly praised Brooklyn and Nicola on social media while the feud has been making headlines, and he has even hung out with them in Cannes. We revealed Elton 'briefly' touched on the family feud before sticking to more neutral territory. 'Elton is the showbiz equivalent of Switzerland,' said a source. 'He's utterly neutral in this row. 'Elton of old may have relished in taking sides - in this case his young godson, Brooklyn - but two years off his 80th birthday, he's a man who has seen and done it all. 'He just wants everyone to be happy. There is no side-taking as such; he simply adores his godson, and really has a laugh with Nicola who he thinks has a great sense of humour. "He wants to look after them in his role as 'spiritual adviser' as a godfather, it's a role he takes seriously. 'Elton and David think the situation is terribly sad, and has gently suggested to all involved that life is short — and to patch things up." Victoria then appeared to intervene after the Rocket Man vocalist's involvement. She liked Brooklyn's latest Instagram reel showing him rustling up pasta in the kitchen, suggesting tensions could be thawing. 7 Mum of four Victoria has hit the heart-shaped button on his uploads this month Credit: Instagram 7 Brooklyn is said to be 'obsessed' with American wife Nicola Credit: Instagram
