Injured Pirates fan Kavan Markwood known as resilient, kind. ‘He'll take this and fight hard'

New York Times02-05-2025

Sometime Wednesday evening, South Allegheny High School athletic director Mike Crown saw that a fan had fallen out of the stands at that night's Pittsburgh Pirates game. When he got up Thursday morning, Crown was reading more about the incident before work, and that's when he saw the pictures and video.

'When I saw the tattoo on the shoulder,' Crown said, 'I knew it was Kav.'
It would be a few hours before officials confirmed that Kavan Markwood was the man who toppled over the railing at PNC Field and fell 21 feet onto the warning track below. Markwood was carted off the field and transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was said to be in critical condition.
Crown didn't need official confirmation of Markwood's identity. He saw the tattoo, recognized another one of the people in the video with Markwood, and eventually got a clear enough look at Markwood's face. Crown knew it was the kid he'd coached in freshman football less than a decade ago.
'If I know Kavan and how he takes these things,' Crown said, 'he'll take this and fight hard and get through this whole situation.'
Football was a passion for Markwood, and it became a strength. He was undersized as a freshman and sophomore, when Crown was the South Allegheny coach, but after a growth spurt, Markwood became a crucial part of the team as a junior and senior under head coach Frank Cortazzo III. He was an outside linebacker and running back, all-conference and team MVP as a senior, and he went on to play for Walsh University and Wheeling University, earning MEC Commissioner's Honor Roll at Wheeling in 2023.

'Kavan is not only an outstanding athlete but an even more exceptional young man,' Cortazzo said in an email. 'His resilience, heart, and strength are truly unmatched.'
South Allegheny spokesperson Laura Thompson confirmed that Markwood was a 2022 graduate of the high school and echoed the coaches' scouting reports.
'Kavan is best known for his resilience, strength, and kindness,' Thompson said. 'He is a friend to all — someone who lifts others up and faces challenges with courage and grace.'

In Wednesday's seventh inning, Markwood was sitting with friends along the railing atop The Clemente Wall, which is the section of PNC Park's outfield fence beyond right field. The wall is 21 feet high, a nod to Pirates Hall of Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente, who wore the No. 21. When Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run double to put the Pirates ahead 4-3, video appears to show Markwood springing up, toppling over the railing, and somersaulting through the air before crashing onto the warning track below.
TribLIVE, a Pittsburgh newspaper, reported that witnesses described that Markwood, 20, was growing excited that the Pirates were rallying 'and had taken off his shirt and poured beer on himself before McCutchen's at-bat.'
The game stopped for several minutes as Pittsburgh EMS, as well as training staff for both the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs, treated Markwood on the field. Several players were clearly shaken, but the game was not suspended (the decision on whether to suspend a game under such circumstances is made by Major League Baseball in consultation with the teams and umpires on site).
Pittsburgh Public Safety posted to X on Thursday, saying the incident was 'being treated as accidental in nature.' Asked how they came to that conclusion, a spokesperson said: 'Detectives reviewed all available video footage and conducted multiple interviews during their investigation into this incident. It has been determined to be accidental and I have no further information beyond that.'
Pirates chairman Bob Nutting issued a statement thanking the first responders who treated Markwood.
'We are devastated,' Nutting said. 'Pirates baseball is a community, and our fans are like family. In times like these, we must come together, support one another, and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers.'

By the time he left for work on Thursday morning, Crown was similarly stunned to realize he knew the man who lay injured in the Pirates outfield. He not only knew his name, but he also knew his personality.
'He fought hard in everything he did,' Crown said. 'He worked hard. He had a lot of grit.'
That's the part Crown kept coming back to when he talked about Markwood.
'He's a fighter,' Crown said. 'He's going to pull through it.'

Seattle fills out forward group, while Vancouver emphasizes defense following PWHL expansion draft

PWHL Seattle GM Meghan Turner can already envision having her top two lines in place with a group of forwards led by Hilary Knight. In Vancouver, general manager Cara Gardner Morey's emphasis was defense first. The league's two newest teams took distinct approaches in continuing to build their respective identities during the league's seven-round expansion draft on Monday night. The draft followed the PWHL's five-day exclusive signing period in which both teams signed their allowed maximum of five players. Though Vancouver used five of its seven selections on forwards, Gardner Morey opened the draft by choosing Ottawa defenseman Ashton Bell with the No. 1 pick. Bell and Boston's Sydney Bard, selected 13th on Monday, join a talented blueline that already includes the former Minnesota tandem of Claire Thompson and Sophie Jaques, who signed with Vancouver last week. 'I was a defender and I really think it's such a valuable position, and finding the right D and having a great core, one through eight even, is what makes championship teams,' said Gardner Morey, who is also set in net with the signing of Ottawa goalie Emerance Maschmeyer. In Seattle, Turner used the No. 2 pick on selecting Ottawa defenseman Aneta Tejralová. She then chose forwards with Seattle's next three selections in picking Boston's Hannah Bilka, New York's Jessie Eldridge and Toronto's Julia Gosling. The trio join a forward group that already features Knight, Alex Carpenter and Danielle Serdachny, who were signed last week. Seattle's initial 12-player roster features a mix of leadership in veterans Knight and Carpenter and emerging youth with four of six players selected in the first round of last year's draft in Serdachny (selected second), Bilka (fourth), defenseman Cayla Barnes (fifth) and Gosling (sixth). 'I'm really excited for these younger players to be able to learn from truly some of the best in the game in terms of Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight,' Turner said of the two long-time U.S. national team stars. 'I don't know if I was specifically forward-minded, but it's hard to pass up the three that I did sign.' Both expansion franchises are working under the same salary-cap restrictions as the league's other six teams, though the PWHL does not reveal player salaries. And both enjoy an advantageous head start with the league limiting existing teams to initially protecting only three players, before allowed to add a fourth player to the list after a team loses two from its roster. Each of the existing teams lost four players apiece, with the rules favoring the expansion teams by allowing them to be competitive from the start of the PWHL's third season, expected to open in November. Seattle's lineup features plenty of offense. Knight, a four-time Olympian, is an PWHL MVP finalist this year after finishing tied for the league lead with 29 points. Carpenter was an MVP finalist in 2024, when she finished tied for second with 23 points. And Eldridge, this season, finished tied for fifth in the league with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). Vancouver earned the first pick after winning a ball drawing. Both teams then alternated in having two picks each before Seattle closed the draft by selecting Boston defenseman Emily Brown 14th. Turner split her picks in selecting three forwards and four defensemen, rounded out by Montreal's Anna Wilgren and Toronto's Megan Carter. Vancouver chose two defenseman and five forwards, including Toronto's Izzy Daniel, who closed her senior season at Cornell in being selected the 2024 Patty Kazmaier award winner as women's hockey MVP. Daniel joins former Toronto teammate Sarah Nurse, who signed with Vancouver last week. Joining Thompson and Jaques in Vancouver are two more members of the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in forwards Brooke McQuigge and Denisa Krizova. Vancouver also drafted Montreal forward Abby Boreen and New York forward Gabby Rosenthal. Next up for the expansion teams is joining the rest of the league in the free-agent signing period that opens on Monday followed by the six-round PWHL draft on June 24 in Ottawa. ___ AP women's hockey:

Rivals Camp Series: The five best QBs of the 2025 regionals

The regional stops of the Rivals Camp Series is in the books with the Rivals Five-Star at the Indianapolis Colts' practice facility coming up later this month. Today, we look at the best players at each position through the regional events starting with quarterback. RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker Houston showed in Dallas that he has all the traits of an elite quarterback and it's why USC has made him its top priority in the 2027 class and many others, including Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and LSU, are staying involved. The Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian high four-star is not the biggest quarterback in the world but that's what everyone said about Kyler Murray, Bryce Young and so many others. In today's game, quarterback height is less important than ever before. Houston is a playmaker and even if a camp setting isn't the best for him, the four-star still delivered in a major way. Over the last few days, Jarrard has visited Purdue, Notre Dame and Clemson and heading into the Atlanta camp he had received offers from Georgia and Ohio State as the 2027 four-star from Kennesaw (Ga.) North Cobb is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the entire country. The ball pops off Jarrard's hand. He has velocity, timing and everything else to back up all the attention he's received on the recruiting trail. The Atlanta Camp was loaded at quarterback and even though Jarrard didn't win the MVP award, he was definitely impressive and one of the best QBs at any Rivals regional camp. To beat out Teddy Jarrard, North Carolina commit Travis Burgess, Mississippi State pledge Brodie McWhorter and others for the MVP award, Johnson had a phenomenal performance at the Atlanta camp which was one of many this offseason. The 2027 four-star quarterback from Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes was sharp, showed off great arm talent, had a clean motion throughout the event and then seemed to get better and better throughout the camp. It was a close race at the top but Johnson edged out some other elite quarterbacks. The five-star quarterback was fantastic as always at the Los Angeles stop and what's even more impressive is that a camp setting is not where Lyons does his best work. The Folsom, Calif., standout sat in the pocket and zipped passes all over the field. He knows when to dial it back a little bit and has such an unreal feel for receivers and immediately having chemistry with them. Lyons is best when he can freelance a little bit, escape pressure and make magic happen and that's not a camp setting but he was still great. Oregon, BYU, Michigan and others continue after him. It's hard to believe that Wade is a 2028 prospect because he has all the tools and is physically developed enough that it wouldn't be a shock to anyone if he reclassified because he doesn't need three more high school seasons. He's now the guy at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy and he should shine because he is a special prospect who will clearly be under five-star consideration. Wade was arguably the best quarterback at the loaded Los Angeles event, which is always so deep at the position. Even still, the 2028 prospect stood out. He has the total package from decision-making to arm talent and beyond. Oregon, Texas and others have already made an impression.
