Simon Yates conquers Finestre demons to take Giro d'Italia glory
On the mountain where his dreams of Giro victory were shattered by Chris Froome's famous solo breakaway in 2018, Yates turned the tables with a masterclass of his own as his rivals were left to question their own tactics.
The 32-year-old Lancastrian rode away from Isaac del Toro and Richard Carapaz on the brutal gradients and the gravel to turn an 81-second deficit and third place into pink and a three minute, 56-second lead over Del Toro, and can now celebrate his second Grand Tour crown in Rome on Sunday.

That it happened on the Finestre made it all the more special for Yates.
'I think when the route of the parcours was released, I always had in the back of my mind to try and do something here and close the chapter, let's say,' he said. 'I'm just still a bit speechless that I was able to do it.
'I felt good, the whole race I did, but I never had the right moment to show what I could do and I found the opportunity today. I was trying to get away from Richard and Isaac because I knew when I could race at my own pace, I'd be really strong – and that's what I managed to do.
'The whole team have been fantastic the entire race, and without Wout (Van Aert) in the valley and the rest of the team the entire day, it wouldn't have been possible.
'Maybe I was looking relaxed this morning, but I had doubts I could do it. The guys encouraged me and believed in me, so thanks to them.
'It's unbelievable, I'm trying to find the words now, but words are failing me – sorry.'
Australian Chris Harper took the stage 20 win from a breakaway in Sestriere but all eyes were further down the road as Yates blew the race apart with surely his finest day on a bike, shedding tears after the finish line.
Carapaz and his EF Education-EasyPost team had been lining up an attack at the foot of the feared Finestre – the 18km climb which averages 9.2 per cent, with the final third ridden on gravel – and duly launched it almost as soon as the road went up.
As UAE Team Emirates' Del Toro followed, Yates was initially distanced but was merely biding his time as he soon set off in pursuit, catching the pair and then launching his own attacks, opening up a gap with the fourth and riding clear, still with more than 40km of the 205km stage remaining.
Carapaz tried to respond but could not, while the 21-year-old Del Toro, spending an 11th day in the pink jersey, simply stuck the Ecuadorian's wheel, refusing to take a turn until it proved to be too late.

Yates crossed the summit of the climb, above the snow line and in the clouds, more than 90 seconds ahead of them, already the virtual leader of the race.
That gap only grew on the descent as he hooked up with Visma-Lease a Bike team-mate Wout Van Aert and the pair behind accepted defeat, allowing the gap to balloon on the approach to the final climb into Sestriere.
With Sunday's final stage in Rome one for the sprinters, Yates stands ready to celebrate his second Grand Tour victory following his win in the 2018 Vuelta a Espana. He will be the third Briton to win the Giro after Froome in 2018 and Tao Geohegan Hart in 2020.

The IBA banned Khelif after tests taken in New Delhi allegedly produced the DNA of a 'male'. The IOC - who replaced the IBA as the Olympic's boxing governing body - were warned about the tests and urged to remove Khelif from the competition. But Khelif was allowed to box in Paris because of her female passport status. Now, the alleged sex-test results from the 2023 World Championships have been published for the first time by 3 Wire Sports, and suggest the boxer is biologically male. American journalist Alan Abrahamson produced the result of a test said to have been carried out on the boxer in New Delhi in March 2023 - which triggered the boxer's disqualification. The document published summarises the findings on Khelif as 'abnormal', stating: 'Chromosome analysis reveals male karyotype." A karyotype refers to an individual's complete set of chromosomes, which in Khelif's case has been reported by (IBA) as being XY, the male pattern. Khelif refused to respond directly to the claims in a social media post on Monday, instead focusing on her work as a Unicef ambassador - a role she has held since January 2024. The post featured a photo of Khelif wearing a blue polo bearing the organisation's logo as she made a heart symbol with her hands to celebrate the "Global Day of Parents". The alleged test results disputing Khelif's gender carry the letterhead of Dr Lal PathLabs in New Delhi, accredited by the American College of Pathologists and certified by the Swiss-based International Organisation for Standardisation. This directly challenges what IOC spokesman Mark Adams said in a tense news conference at the Paris Olympics. He described the results that saw Khelif banned as 'ad hoc' and 'not legitimate'. IOC president Thomas Bach even claimed that the results are the product of a Russian-led misinformation campaign. It followed after the IBA - headed by Russia's Umar Kremlev - had been stripped of IOC recognition in a row over ethics and financial management. Khelif has always denied being a biological male and even named JK Rowling and Elon Musk in a cyberbullying lawsuit. And the 26-year-old has vowed to fight on, even eyeing another gold at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. But World Boxing has ruled that Khelif is ineligible to enter future events as a woman without first submitting to the same chromosome testing that has already triggered the boxer's disqualification at global level. The governing body - provisionally approved to run Olympic boxing in LA - announced that all athletes in its competitions over 18 years old must undergo a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) genetic test to determine their sex. The test detects chromosomal material through a mouth swab, saliva or blood. Khelif has failed to provide any evidence of having female chromosomes in the nine months since the gender scandal erupted. In February, Khelif spoke out in her defence and wrote: 'For two years, I have taken the high road while my name and image have been used, unauthorised, to further personal and political agendas through the spreading and dissemination of baseless lies and misinformation. But silence is no longer an option. 'The IBA, an organisation that I am no longer associated with and which is no longer recognised by the IOC, have again made baseless accusations that are false and offensive, using them to further their agenda... 'My team is carefully reviewing the situation and will take all necessary legal steps to ensure that my rights and the principles of fair competition are upheld." An IOC spokesperson told Sun Sport: "The IOC has always made it clear that eligibility criteria are the responsibility of the respective International Federation. EXCLUSIVE: Why new Aberdeen goalkeeper Nick Suman is the total package, according to Cove Rangers boss Paul Hartley
Cove Rangers manager Paul Hartley insists Aberdeen have signed the total package in new goalkeeper Nick Suman. The 25-year-old shotstopper last week signed a pre-contract with the Dons and will join his new team-mates for pre-season training Hartley is sad to lose his goalkeeper ahead of the League One restart, but says Suman has all the qualities to be a success with Jimmy Thelin's Premiership big-guns and Scottish Cup holders. The Cove boss said: 'Aberdeen have just got a really good, solid professional going in there. 'Nick comes and takes things, and he is unbelievable on the ball, too – honestly, he could be an outfield player as he is very comfortable. 'We did a lot of work in terms of possession with using the keepers and it was no problem for him. 'He has great feet, is a great talker, has good organisation and is a shotstopper. 'He's just a good person. A guy who has a great attitude to train and work and really believes in himself.' Suman could have been lining up against the Dons next season rather than as a member of their squad after Motherwell pushed hard to bring him to Fir Park in January. The Steelmen were rebuffed in their bid to sign Suman, but were keen on adding the Australian to their ranks this summer, as were Dundee United. Hartley fought hard to keep his goalkeeper in January, but was quick to praise the positive attitude shown by Suman after the disappointment of missing out on a Premiership move in the winter window. He said: 'I spoke to Jimmy about him and to (goalkeeper coach) Craig Hinchcliffe, but there were two or three other clubs who wanted to sign him. 'He could have been a Motherwell player in January – we did knock a couple of bids back. It was obviously a situation where he maybe wanted to go, but we held firm. 'We spoke to him and I told him I didn't want to let him go at the time because we were chasing promotion. 'I always said to him that I think he would get a really good move if he kept working hard and kept his head down. 'It didn't really affect him. He didn't throw his dummy out the pram. He just kept working away. 'I'm delighted for him. I really like him and I've got a lot of time for Nick. 'He was good in the dressing room for me and he deserves a move.' Former Dons captain Hartley took a gamble when he brought Suman to Scottish football two years ago, but he believes his punt paid off handsomely for Cove. Hartley said: 'It wasn't really a trial with us. I knew he'd had a trial with Rangers a while back – I think it might have been when Steven Gerrard was the manager. 'It was actually through an agent that I've dealt with quite a bit from Avid Sports, who recommended a goalkeeper to us. 'We watched the footage, liked what we saw, and we spoke to some people in Australia. 'We actually took a wee gamble to be quite honest with you – I actually just signed him there and then on a two-year deal on the back of what I'd seen on video. 'I liked what I saw of him and the rest is history as they say.' The Cove manager believes the progress of Suman shows why his club are an attractive prospect for players looking for a platform to show their qualities. Hartley points to the recent international recognition of another former Cove player as a positive advertisement for his club. He said: 'We're a stepping stone for players. 'I look at Rumarn Burrell at the weekend scoring for Jamaica and it gave me a wee bit of satisfaction – we give an opportunity to guys. 'In the last two seasons, Burrell's had a good move to Burton Albion and is playing on the national team. I just think it's a good story for us. 'I'm not here to stand in his way. If a big move comes along, I'll be the first to congratulate him. 'I'm really pleased for Nick, honestly, because of the way he was in the two years with me. 'We had a lot of trust between us, and he deserves a move. 'I think that's the message to any young player. 'The three young players we had on loan from Aberdeen, they did really well for us. Hopefully we've got a good relationship.' Suman's departure means just nine Cove players are under contract at the club for next season. Hartley has offered new deals to Balint Demus, Mikey Doyle, Will Gillingham, Declan Glass and Blair Yule, but the Cove manager is braced for another turnaround of personnel in the summer. He said: 'It's looking like it will be a busy summer again for us. 'I've obviously tried to sign a few players, and you've seen the lads we have offered deals to and we're waiting for them to come back. 'We will need a wee bit of another rebuild job. I don't know where we're going with the loan players, who we're going to get in or whatever. 'So it's going to be another busy time, but that's my job. 'I've to try to get a squad together and make sure that we're ready for the start of the season.'

"I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while, and you just have to look at those clubs' trajectory even after I've left, they're still competing for things," he told Australian media last week. "I really think this is a moment in time where this club can really push on and be a real contender for honours on a yearly basis." Spurs have already been linked with Fulham's head coach Marco Silva, who is yet to open talks over a new deal at Craven Cottage, along with Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Brentford's Thomas Frank.
