EXCLUSIVE: Why new Aberdeen goalkeeper Nick Suman is the total package, according to Cove Rangers boss Paul Hartley
Cove Rangers manager Paul Hartley insists Aberdeen have signed the total package in new goalkeeper Nick Suman.
The 25-year-old shotstopper last week signed a pre-contract with the Dons and will join his new team-mates for pre-season training
Hartley is sad to lose his goalkeeper ahead of the League One restart, but says Suman has all the qualities to be a success with Jimmy Thelin's Premiership big-guns and Scottish Cup holders.
The Cove boss said: 'Aberdeen have just got a really good, solid professional going in there.
'Nick comes and takes things, and he is unbelievable on the ball, too – honestly, he could be an outfield player as he is very comfortable.
'We did a lot of work in terms of possession with using the keepers and it was no problem for him.
'He has great feet, is a great talker, has good organisation and is a shotstopper.
'He's just a good person. A guy who has a great attitude to train and work and really believes in himself.'
Suman could have been lining up against the Dons next season rather than as a member of their squad after Motherwell pushed hard to bring him to Fir Park in January.
The Steelmen were rebuffed in their bid to sign Suman, but were keen on adding the Australian to their ranks this summer, as were Dundee United.
Hartley fought hard to keep his goalkeeper in January, but was quick to praise the positive attitude shown by Suman after the disappointment of missing out on a Premiership move in the winter window.
He said: 'I spoke to Jimmy about him and to (goalkeeper coach) Craig Hinchcliffe, but there were two or three other clubs who wanted to sign him.
'He could have been a Motherwell player in January – we did knock a couple of bids back. It was obviously a situation where he maybe wanted to go, but we held firm.
'We spoke to him and I told him I didn't want to let him go at the time because we were chasing promotion.
'I always said to him that I think he would get a really good move if he kept working hard and kept his head down.
'It didn't really affect him. He didn't throw his dummy out the pram. He just kept working away.
'I'm delighted for him. I really like him and I've got a lot of time for Nick.
'He was good in the dressing room for me and he deserves a move.'
Former Dons captain Hartley took a gamble when he brought Suman to Scottish football two years ago, but he believes his punt paid off handsomely for Cove.
Hartley said: 'It wasn't really a trial with us. I knew he'd had a trial with Rangers a while back – I think it might have been when Steven Gerrard was the manager.
'It was actually through an agent that I've dealt with quite a bit from Avid Sports, who recommended a goalkeeper to us.
'We watched the footage, liked what we saw, and we spoke to some people in Australia.
'We actually took a wee gamble to be quite honest with you – I actually just signed him there and then on a two-year deal on the back of what I'd seen on video.
'I liked what I saw of him and the rest is history as they say.'
The Cove manager believes the progress of Suman shows why his club are an attractive prospect for players looking for a platform to show their qualities.
Hartley points to the recent international recognition of another former Cove player as a positive advertisement for his club.
He said: 'We're a stepping stone for players.
'I look at Rumarn Burrell at the weekend scoring for Jamaica and it gave me a wee bit of satisfaction – we give an opportunity to guys.
'In the last two seasons, Burrell's had a good move to Burton Albion and is playing on the national team. I just think it's a good story for us.
'I'm not here to stand in his way. If a big move comes along, I'll be the first to congratulate him.
'I'm really pleased for Nick, honestly, because of the way he was in the two years with me.
'We had a lot of trust between us, and he deserves a move.
'I think that's the message to any young player.
'The three young players we had on loan from Aberdeen, they did really well for us. Hopefully we've got a good relationship.'
Suman's departure means just nine Cove players are under contract at the club for next season.
Hartley has offered new deals to Balint Demus, Mikey Doyle, Will Gillingham, Declan Glass and Blair Yule, but the Cove manager is braced for another turnaround of personnel in the summer.
He said: 'It's looking like it will be a busy summer again for us.
'I've obviously tried to sign a few players, and you've seen the lads we have offered deals to and we're waiting for them to come back.
'We will need a wee bit of another rebuild job. I don't know where we're going with the loan players, who we're going to get in or whatever.
'So it's going to be another busy time, but that's my job.
'I've to try to get a squad together and make sure that we're ready for the start of the season.'

Where are Motherwell in manager hunt? And is Neilson a contender?
Michael Wimmer's final game as Motherwell manager was on Sunday, 18 May. He then headed home to Germany before surprisingly informing officials at the Scottish Premiership club a few days later that he wouldn't be returning after just a dozen matches in weeks have passed and we are now well into June. There is still no sign of an appointment and the players are due back from their holidays to start pre-season training on or around 18 June. So what is happening at the Fir Park club? What's the process & who is making decisions? A three-man sub-committee of Motherwell's executive board will draw up a shortlist, conduct interviews and make their managerial recommendation. That is much the same process that brought in Wimmer after Stuart Kettlewell's departure earlier in the main man at the helm, and the driving force behind the scenes at Fir Park, is chairman Kyrk Macmillan. The fashion businessman, whose father-in-law is on the board of Hertha Berlin, is originally from East Kilbride and has watched games at Fir Park with his own father and grandfather for the past 30 will be assisted in the hunt by chief executive Brian Caldwell and digital marketing chief executive Greg Anderson, who is also one of the key figures in the Well Society, the majority shareholding group who own the club. What are they looking for? The board sub-committee will follow the same procedure that led them to Wimmer, using data and metrics to judge how candidates align with the club's values, such as youth there is no reason for them not to do that. After all, Wimmer's shock exit was not down to results or were looking promising under the ex-Austria Vienna boss, who spent eight years working in Nurnberg's academy and three years working at Bundesliga level with Stuttgart, including an impressive interim spell in charge of the first the board land on a manager with a similar CV, they will be doing well. But they badly need some stability, given this is their fourth search for a manager in just three years. So who is in the running? Former Hearts and Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson's CV is among those to have dropped on Macmillan's last job was with the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL, America's second tier, and it is understood a return to the Scottish game would be very much appeal following successful spells at Tynecastle and Tannadice. After guiding Hearts to third place in the top flight in 2015-16, Neilson moved to MK Dons before being appointed United manager. He guided them to promotion in the Covid-curtailed 2019-20 season, before leading Hearts to another top-flight promotion and third-placed Premiership finish in a second spell at Tynecastle. But there are a number of candidates who could stand out to the Fir Park club. Some are currently in employment and would potentially cost a compensation fee. Others, such as Neilson, are between clubs. Take Tony Docherty. Until very, very recently, he was the Dundee manager. After steering them to a top-six finish, he was sacked at the end of his second season after only securing their Premiership status on the final day of the side were very good going forward, but very porous defensively. Consistency was a problem, but their attacking flair, allied to Docherty's fine first season, may tempt Motherwell to consider familiar face is Scott Brown - but could Motherwell tempt the Ayr United boss into his first crack at the Premiership as a manager? Seen as upwardly mobile in coaching circles, Brown made his disappointment at failing to get Ayr promoted from the second tier clear. His experience as a player, added to his contacts, plus his coaching credentials with Fleetwood and in the Championship, might fit if Motherwell are looking for a young, Scottish what about Temur Ketsbaia? The Georgian impressed when interviewed after Kettlewell's departure but was ultimately passed over in favour of Wimmer. Most recently coach of the Cypriot national team, Ketsbaia also coached his own national side and has led both AEK Athens and Olympiacos. His wide experience of the European game and his contacts book would make him an attractive proposition, as would his knowledge of the British game, having played for Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Dundee. Have your say Motherwell fans, what do you think? Is the delay in naming a replacement for Wimmer a concern? And who would you like to see take charge?Let us know here

Ryan Reynolds' legion of Australian fans get MORE good news as Deadpool star teams up with Hugh Jackman for exciting new Aussie sports venture
With Wrexham set to travel Down Under for their upcoming pre-season tour, Ryan Reynolds has once again delighted his legion of Australian fans by announcing a new venture with Hollywood A-lister and Aussie icon Hugh Jackman. It can be revealed that Jackman and Reynolds, have become the new co-owners of the newly rebranded BONDS Flying Roos - Australia's SailGP team. The news also comes as underwear brand BONDS have become the new Title Partner of the Australian sailing outfit. It is the first time that the SailGP side has had a Title Partner, with BONDS, one of Australia's most iconic brands, set to fly the Australian flag alongside the Flying Roos. In true Reynolds fashion, the co-owners released an amusing joint statement claiming that Jackman would be bringing his 'emotional support human [Reynolds]' along for the voyage. 'We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure,' the Deadpool and Wolverine stars said in a joint statement. 'Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. 'He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. 'Apologies in advance to Australia. 'No comment on whether we're writing this in our BONDS. No further questions.' It also means that Reynolds has added yet another business venture to his expanding portfolio. The American actor was seen celebrating earlier this year after Wrexham were promoted to the Championship. He famously owns the footy club alongside fellow Hollywood superstar and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator, Rob McElhenney. Reynolds, 48, also has investments in Aviation American Gin and the Alpine Formula One team. Meanwhile, Aussie star Tom Slingsby and his team are currently leading the SailGP championship with 39 points, one point against Emirates GBR in second place, and two clear of Spain in third. The Aussie crew have won the SailGP championship three times over the past four years, with Slingsby, a CEO, driver and fellow co-owner of the team, speaking of his pride to have such inspiring brands and individuals join the Flying Roos on their venture. 'This is an incredible milestone for us and for our sport, having global icons Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds come on board as co-owners of our team,' Slingsby said. 'They bring unmatched star power, a love for storytelling, and a sharp sense of humour that fits perfectly with our team. 'With BONDS joining as our Title Partner and the launch of the BONDS Flying Roos, we're building something distinctly Australian; a team driven by spirit, resilience, and national pride.' BONDS recently launched in the United States, in partnership with Robert Irwin, and Tanya Deans, president of the company added that the organisation were also over the moon to be on board with Australian royalty in Jackman. 'We're thrilled to join forces with such an iconic duo and an adrenaline-fueled sport ready for its moment in the spotlight. And how do you say no to Hugh Jackman? He's Australian royalty! 'As we set sail on this new adventure, the BONDS Flying Roos have one less thing to worry about – we've got their backs (and bums) covered,' Deans said. The BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team are now due to make their official debut following the rebrand at the Muybadala New York Sail Grand Prix, which is being hosted between June 7 and 8.

New Rangers boss Russell Martin's chances of league success and beating Celtic rated as bookies reveal odds
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUSSELL MARTIN stopped short of promising to win trophies in his first season as Rangers boss. But he is adamant he has the tools to ensure the Light Blues WILL be seriously challenging Celtic when it comes to silverware - and one bookie tends to agree. 1 Russell Martin will be the new man in the Rangers dugout next season Credit: Willie Vass Martin was confirmed as the new Rangers head coach this morning and unveiled at a press conference with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart by his side. Thelwell described Martin as the perfect appointment and has already outlined the five key things that made him the outstanding candidate for the Gers hierarchy. Martin told the media at his introductory press conference that he believes he CAN turn Rangers into trophy winners this season. It's just a question of whether he will or not, given the Hoops' dominance in domestic competitions this season. William Hill have attempted to answer that question by providing odds on Rangers winning the league in Martin's first season. The bookmaker has also priced up how likely the 39-year-old is to win all four league games against Celtic in the coming year. They also rated Gers' chances of going unbeaten at home, going unbeaten in the league as a whole and how likely they are to score in all 38 Premiership games. Celtic remain the favourites to win the title at 4/11 ON. But Rangers are now as short as 2/1 to claim the trophy. William Hill clearly fancy Martin's ability to make Rangers a force at home again, a far cry from their poor form at Ibrox under Barry Ferguson and latterly under Philippe Clement. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed With that in mind they've gone as short as 7/3 for the Ibrox side to not lose a game at home next season. Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: 'Following Russell Martin's appointment as the new Rangers boss, we go 7/4 that he makes Ibrox a fortress next season and goes unbeaten at home in the league. 'We've priced up some specials for the Scotsman's first season in charge, including 7/2 about him to win both home league games against Celtic – which would surely get the fans on his side. 'The Gers are 2/1 to win the league, with Celtic our current favourites at 4/11. The two will face off four times in the league this season and a clean sweep for Rangers is 40/1." Rangers 2025/26 #YourOdds (William Hill) Rangers to win the league 2/1 Rangers to go unbeaten in all 19 home league games 7/4 Rangers to win both home league games versus Celtic 7/2 Rangers to score at least one goal in each of their 38 Scottish Premiership games 9/2 Rangers to remain unbeaten in All four league games versus Celtic 5/1 Rangers to win all 19 Scottish Premiership home games 20/1 Rangers to go unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership 25/1 Rangers to win all 4 league games versus Celtic 40/1 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
