Vacant space below Trichy RoBs cries for attention
Trichy corporation
to implement new infrastructure proposals, the vacant space below road over bridges (RoBs) remain largely ignored and underutilized.
As projects such as walking tracks set up below the elevated roads are failing, residents, particularly youngsters have sought the local body to introduce activity-based public space such as
artificial play turfs
and badminton courts beneath the bridges to improve the city's liveability.
Trichy has six major RoBs that have a combined 3.3-km long space below the elevated structures. While space below Palakkarai RoB, Thennur RoB, and Srirangam RoB were used for setting up walking tracks, public toilets, and an open-air gym, the model projects remain underutilised.
Meanwhile, since the demand for artificial turfs to play cricket, football, pickleball, and indoor badminton courts are gaining ground among youngsters and families, residents opined that Trichy corporation like Chennai corporation should explore developing the vacant space to benefit the public.

"People are starting to litter in space below Thiruvanaikoil RoB. While residents from congested neighbourhoods lack proper open space, such spacious areas below flyovers can be developed into play zones to help families spend quality time," said Satheeshkumar Rajendran, a resident of Srirangam.
Pointing to Chennai's Kathipara elevated road's urban square, residents said that the local body could monetise the space below the bridges by converting into play turfs as private players charge up to Rs 1,250 per hour for such facilities.
In some areas, shops are gradually encroaching space below flyovers to store inventories while some others use it to park vehicles. "Residents are unable to take U-turns below the Trichy junction RoB's bus stand arm as cars and autorickshaws are parked under it," said H Ghouse Baig, a consumer rights activist.
"The corporation is planning to create a resting space for gig workers below one of the bridges, preferably below the Trichy junction RoB. Other proposals to utilise the vacant space will be studied and considered for implementation," commissioner V Saravanan told TOI.

2 coaches of Jan Sadharan Express derail near Kanpur
1 2 Kanpur: Two coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express (15269) derailed between Kanpur and Tundla in Uttar Pradesh on Friday afternoon. The derailment occurred near Bhaurpur outer area near Kanpur while the train was switching to the loop line at point and line number four to give passage to two passing trains. The slow speed of the train averted a major derailment, said rail officials. About 15 passengers sustained minor injuries. The up track remained closed for three hours, brining 12 trains to halt at nearby stations. Senior railway officials and emergency response teams reached the site and carried out relief operations. Following a brief 10-minute stop, it proceeded onwards. Around 4:15pm, while being directed to the loop line near Bhaurpur station's outer yard, the sixth and seventh coaches derailed. Loco pilot Chaman Ahmed and loco inspector Sunil Sharma from Tundla were operating the engine during the incident. The derailment caused complete disruption of the up track. Railway operations continued on the down track. Senior railway officials, including NCR general manager Upendra Joshi, DRM Rajneesh Agrawal and central station director Ashutosh Singh, visited the site. Several trains were diverted after the derailment. The Lucknow Junction Swarna Shatabdi Express was redirected from Unnao Junction to Delhi via Lucknow-Moradabad-Ghaziabad. The Bikaner Superfast Express was diverted through Bhimsen, Jhansi-Agra Cantt-Bandikui, while the North East Express was rerouted via Kanpur Central-Lucknow-Moradabad-Ghaziabad. BMC urges agencies to clear piled-up construction debris
Bhubaneswar: The works department, Water Corporation of Odisha (Watco), power distribution company and even Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) are among the agencies responsible for piling up of construction and demolition materials on several roads leading to public inconvenience, officials said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now For piling up of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, BMC has a provision to impose fines. It also charges the cost of removal of C&D waste on individuals and institutions. "During my recent field visits, I saw that several agencies are piling up waste on roads and along roadsides. This practice poses a risk to commuters and affects the aesthetic beauty of the city. We will sensitise all the stakeholders carrying out various construction once again. If agencies do not adhere to the norms after that, they will be penalised, and the cost of lifting the waste will be recovered from them," said BMC commissioner Chanchal Rana. BMC officers said that according to the rules, waste generated through construction, repair, remodelling and demolition of private and govt establishments, households, roads and drains, should be handled properly to avoid litter. However, it has been observed that most govt establishments disregard the norms despite awareness drives being conducted before the launch of a special campaign from July 1, 2023. "The special drive against C&D waste is ongoing, and multiple squads are engaged in enforcing it," Rana added. A BMC squad is authorised to impose a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the owners of C&D waste. In addition, if the BMC removes the waste using its own tractor, it charges Rs 4,500 per trip. BMC has also earmarked designated dumping places, which have been identified based on the requirement of a particular place, such as low-lying areas and mine voids. However, people are hardly implementing this practice. Debabrata Mohanty, managing director of Watco, said instructions have been issued to all general managers to oversee the removal of C&D waste from roads without further delay. "If waste is still piled up on the roads, BMC can identify those places and let us know, and we will remove them at our own cost," he told TOI.
