Jon Rahm ready to embrace Oakmont challenge at US Open
Spain's Jon Rahm speaking to the media on June 10, ahead of the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club, in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. PHOTO: AFP OAKMONT, Pennsylvania - Jon Rahm knows Oakmont Country Club will provide a challenge unlike any other at this week's US Open but the Spaniard said on June 10 the aura of one of the most feared layouts in the world will not impact his game. Oakmont is considered a quintessential US Open venue given its punishing rough, narrow fairways, lightning-fast greens and slew of bunkers that most expect will combine to keep the winning score above par. But Rahm, speaking ahead of the June 12 opening round, plans to embrace the gruelling test that awaits the world's top golfers at the par-70 venue that will be set up at 7,372 yards. 'To be honest, once you start the tournament, all of those things kind of go away. It's business at that point. It's time to post a score,' Rahm, who has posted a top-10 finish in all 20 LIV Golf regular season events he has completed in, told reporters. 'You're not really thinking, oh, this is Oakmont. It's more like, okay, here's the first hole, hopefully make a four, then move onto the next. That's kind of how it goes.' The US Open is widely considered the toughest test in golf and one that Rahm has enjoyed success at as he won in 2021 edition at Torrey Pines to pick up his first major title. Rahm was once quite vocal when things did not go his way but the 30-year-old Spaniard said his ability to accept mistakes and bad breaks on the course has improved. 'It's just a tough course. It's so difficult where very few times anybody has won under par. If it doesn't rain, most likely over par will win again,' said Rahm. 'It's something that none of us are used to, but it's a challenge you need to embrace. 'If there's any part of your game that will be tested on a week like this, it will be your mental game, that's for sure.' Rahm, who held a share of the back-nine final-round lead with Scottie Scheffler at May's PGA Championship before a late collapse, will play the opening two rounds with Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth. Lions survive late onslaught to claim first win of Asian Cup third-round qualifiers
Ikhsan Fandi scored as Singapore defeated Bangladesh in an Asian Cup qualifier on June 10 in Dhaka. PHOTO: FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF SINGAPORE SINGAPORE – Coming through a physical battle in Dhaka, the Lions registered their first win of their Asian Cup third-round Group C qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win against Bangladesh on June 10. World No. 161 Singapore were tested physically by Bangladesh and weathered a storm of aggressive tackles from the hosts who bit hard into 50-50 contests and committed several fouls that went unpunished by the referee. But the Lions kept their cool, stuck to their tasks and did enough to secure the three points to top Group C on goals scored, ahead of Hong Kong who pipped India 1-0 with an injury-time winner. After spurning several chances, the Lions opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time to silence a fervent crowd of 21,317 at a sold-out National Stadium in Dhaka. Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma looked to claim a ball in the air, but flapped under pressure from Lions defender Jordan Emaviwe. The ball then fell to Harhys Stewart who put it back into the danger area for Song Ui-young to net from close range, despite Bangladesh players' efforts to clear off the line. Lions forward Ikhsan Fandi scored the second goal in the 59th minute when he latched on to the ball and tucked it away under pressure after Hami Syahin's shot was parried into his path by the goalkeeper. Bangladesh then made it nervy for Singapore when they scored in the 68th minute through Rakib Hossain, whose shot squeezed under Izwan Mahbud after he was sent through on goal by Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who had dispossessed Harhys in midfield. But once again, as Bangladesh looked for an equaliser, calm heads prevailed as the Lions held on for victory. Singapore and Hong Kong are both on four points after two Group C matches. Hong Kong secured a last-gasp 1-0 win over India at the Kai Tak Stadium on June 10. The Lions had kicked off their Asian Cup third-round qualifying campaign with a 0-0 home draw against Hong Kong on March 25, while Bangladesh who at 183rd are the lowest-ranked team in the group, had showed their mettle by holding the group's top-ranked team India (127th) in their opening match in Shillong on the same day. Only the group winners will advance to the Asian Cup in 2027. There was a personal milestone to celebrate for the Lions as captain Hariss Harun equalled former Lions defensive stalwart Daniel Bennett's all-time record of 142 caps. The Lions will next face India in back-to-back matches in their Asian Cup qualifying campaign on Oct 9 and 14. Full match report to follow. Australia's Hazlewood returns for WTC final against S Africa
LONDON - Marnus Labuschagne will open the batting for Australia and Josh Hazlewood has been selected in the bowling line-up for the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's, captain Pat Cummins said on the eve of the game on Tuesday. Labuschagne has been moved up the order to accommodate the return of Cameron Green, who underwent back surgery in October and was ruled out of the home season, while Hazlewood is fit again after a calf injury to replace of Scott Boland. "Cam Green has been coming back in great form in the last few weeks and we thought he deserved a spot in the batting lineup. We thought three probably suits him best," Cummins told a press conference. "For Marnus moving one spot up, it's not too different to batting at three. He's done well here in England in the past." Leaving out Boland, who had been one of the heroes of Australia's 3-1 test series win over India this year, had been a difficult decision. "There are some guys where you genuinely say, you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing and that's Scotty. He is just really unfortunate to miss out. "The message to Scotty is there's a lot of test cricket coming up in the next couple of years and just because your mid-30s doesn't mean that's the end of your career. "By having a squad of fast bowlers, hopefully we can extend all our care for an extra couple of years." An element of selection criteria was to reward those who had contributed to defending champions Australia winning 13 of 19 tests in the two-year WTC cycle and reaching yet another final. "I think our selectors have probably shown you that they're happy and they'd rather give someone an extra little run than pull the pin too early. I think it's partly rewarding those guys that got us here.' Cummings said defending the title was high on the Australian priority list, even after all their success in the limited-overs formats. "It's a trophy we've spoken a lot about over the last couple of years. "Test cricket is my favourite format. You've got to basically win in all different conditions to make it into this final. If we can retain that mace, that's a pretty awesome thing for this team." Australia team: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
