Here are Chicago's 5 James Beard nominees

Chicago Tribune02-04-2025
The James Beard Foundation announced Wednesday the finalists vying for its coveted Restaurant and Chef awards, and among them are five Chicago chefs and restaurants, including first-time nominees Galit and Kumiko.
'I was just doing some cleaning and repair stuff, and then my phone started blowing up — I was like 'What's happening?!'' said Julia Momosé, Kumiko partner and creative director. 'It's really incredible. … It's just amazing.'
Kumiko, a Japanese dining bar in the West Loop, was nominated for Outstanding Bar. Momosé, who has a staff of 18, said Kumiko's first-ever semifinalist nomination in January was already a whirlwind.
'When I first opened Kumiko, awards were always one of those things that I was hopeful for, that the work we were doing would be recognized, someday — but not necessarily that we existed to win the awards,' said Momosé, who won a James Beard Foundation Media Award in 2022 for her book 'The Way of the Cocktail.' 'We just wanted to exist and simply be a reflection of the heart and dedication and care and talent and passion for hospitality and for food and for beverage.'
The James Beard Awards are considered to be among the nation's most prestigious honors for the culinary industry. This year will also commemorate the 35th anniversary of the awards and celebrate what the foundation calls the 'transformative role the awards have played in honoring culinary excellence and shaping the evolution of American food culture.'
Along with Kumiko, local finalists include Galit for Outstanding Restaurant, and three Chicago finalists in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio: Thai Dang of HaiSous; Chris Jung and Erling Wu-Bower of Maxwells Trading; and Noah Sandoval of Oriole.
HaiSous, the Vietnamese restaurant that opened in Pilsen in 2017 and has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand, has become known for its wings, crab fried rice, grilled eggplant, curries and unique takes on urban street food. Dang has been a semifinalist in the Great Lakes category four times.
Since Oriole's opening in 2016, the new American restaurant in the West Loop has earned two Michelin stars and received the 2022 Jean Banchet Award for Restaurant of the Year. Sandoval is also a James Beard-nominated chef and was named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs in 2017.
Jung, a first-time James Beard Award finalist, said he felt a mix of emotions when learning of the nomination for Maxwells Trading.
'It was almost like relief, in a way, like when you follow your favorite sports team and they win a playoff game,' said Jung.
The West Loop spot is an intimately American- and Asian-influenced restaurant serving things such as griddle bread inspired by Chinese scallion pancakes, Yamagata koshihikari, suzuki tartare and Royal Milk tiramisu.
'I would be lying if I said this wasn't a dream of mine to be a finalist for a James Beard Award since I have been cooking professionally,' Jung said. 'For me, it frames everything that we've been doing and how faithful I am to my kitchen team, especially. If they didn't care as much as they did, if they didn't execute to the level that they do every day, it doesn't matter if I have cool recipes. They're crushing it. We're really lucky to have such a killer group.'
The whole team at Maxwells Trading was recently recognized in the Tribune's annual Critic's Choice Food Awards as the city's Best New Restaurant.
Wu-Bower said he also took an exhale after hearing the Beard Awards nomination news.
'We get to have a lot of fun, and (the nomination) just kind of magnifies the fun,' he said.
Michelin-starred Galit, located in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, is also in contention for one of the most sought-after accolades.
While Zachary Engel, executive chef of the Middle Eastern eatery serving dishes of Turkish, Iraqi, Greek and Tunisian origin, won a James Beard Award for Rising Star Chef in 2017, the nomination is a first for co-owner Andrés Clavero.
'It's truly surreal,' said Clavero, laughing that he was doing payroll when the announcement came. 'I'm not normally speechless. This is a crazy honor, and just to be nominated and in Chicago as well, hoping to make Chicago proud.'
Galit earned a Michelin star in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and was also named the 2024 Restaurant of the Year by the Jean Banchet Awards.
Last month, Lem's Bar-B-Q, a staple of the South Side's Chatham neighborhood, was recognized by the James Beard Foundation as an 'America's Classic,' which recognizes 'locally and independently owned restaurants with timeless appeal.'
The cohort of finalists was selected from a January list of semifinalists that included a total of 22 Chicago restaurants, chefs and bars. The full list of nominees and honorees can be found on the James Beard Foundation website. The winners will be announced at Chicago's Civic Opera House on June 16.
Last year, Chicago saw just one local winner at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards, with Lula Cafe winning for Outstanding Hospitality.

Terrifying Moment Family Walk Into Kitchen To Find Bear Roaming Goes Viral

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A family has gone viral after sharing the terrifying moment they walked into their kitchen to find that they had an unwelcome visitor. Maude, who posts to TikTok under the username @maudesoper, shared a shocking video to her account on August 6, where she shakily recorded the kitchen and living area of a house on her phone. Suddenly, a bear walks into the shot. And, appearing to take no notice of them, the animal goes sniffing around the room, looking out windows, strolling between the kitchen and living room. The bear then gets up on its hind legs—and opens the refrigerator, standing up and taking it all in as if deciding what to snack on. Maude's video continues rolling, with her and others in the room stepping back smartly each time the bear comes closer. The creature opens doors and climbs up to look through windows, before appearing to exit through the garage. The jaw-dropping video, set to the Jet2 Holiday theme song—which has become a meme over the past few months—has been viewed more than 275,000 times. Days later, Maude shared a second video of the same incident, this time without the song, showcasing the family's shouts and panicked swears. That clip has so far been viewed over 2.5 million times. Commenters flocked to both videos to share their shock, with one saying: "The fact that it knows to look in the refrigerator is insane!" "This is why I'll never do a cabin trip," another posted, as a third commented: "When he stood up … like seeing him in the house wasn't scary enough." "Who left the door open?" one viewer asked, as another said the bear was "opening doors like that's his house." And a third added: "Why are there people in MY BEARBNB?" The bear goes through the refrigerator in the house. The bear goes through the refrigerator in the house. TikTok @maudesoper There are plenty of tips for staying safe around bears when out in the wild, with the United States home to three species: the American black bear, brown and grizzly bears, and polar bears. If you encounter a bear in the wild, the National Park Service (NPS) advises that you use your voice, letting the bear know you are a human and not a prey animal, to stay calm, pick up any small children, and make yourself look as large as possible. Hikers should travel in groups for safety, and should leave the area or take a detour if possible if they see a bear ahead. Do not run, as they are fast and will chase fleeing animals, and do not climb a tree, as both grizzlies and black bears can climb. The ‘Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' Cast vs. Real-Life People

Amanda Knox may be the role a million actresses would kill for, but it's the role Grace Van Patten got. When a true-crime saga as infamous as Amanda Knox's gets the scripted treatment, the first question isn't what story they'll tell, but who gets to play the part. Hulu's The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, produced by Knox herself and Monica Lewinsky, reanimates one of the most dissected trials of the 21st century. Onscreen, we've got the wide-eyed exchange student, the performative prosecutor, and the puppy dog-like Italian love interest. Some choices are uncanny doppelgängers, others lean more vibe than resemblance. Here's how the actors stack up against their real-life counterparts. Van Patten leans into Knox's uncanny mix of girl-next-door innocence and tabloid fixation, down to the colored contacts that became shorthand for her American-in-Italy persona. As Knox's bespectacled boyfriend, De Domenico nails the awkward, bookish vibe—part loyal puppy, part deer in headlights. The mop of curls and soft-spoken energy feel ripped straight from those infamous Perugia photographs. Horgan and Lanza play Amanda's mother and stepfather as the skeptical yet fiercely protective counterbalance to Amanda's father's calm. Horgan especially imbues Edda with a razor-sharp maternal intuition that cuts through the media frenzy. John Hoogenakker as Curt Knox Hoogenakker plays Amanda's steady, pragmatic, Midwestern father, thrust suddenly into the global spotlight. As Amanda's sister, Anna Van Patten (who is Grace's IRL sister, too) gives us the family member who never asked for a headline but got pulled in anyway. Francesco Acquaroli plays the fire-and-brimstone prosecutor on Amanda's case, bringing theatrical flair to the Italian courtroom. And as the detective who led the charge, Roberta Mattei gives Napoleoni the brisk, cigarette-in-hand confidence of an Italian cop who's seen it all—and decided Knox was guilty before the first cappuccino. 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' is streaming on Hulu. Watch Now
