One killed and 14 injured in Russian attacks on western Ukraine
A strike in the western city of Lviv killed one person and injured three others, Ukraine's Emergency Services said.
The region's governor, Maksym Kozytskyi, reported that the blast damaged 26 residential buildings, a kindergarten and several office buildings.
At least 11 people had to be relocated as a result of the attack.
"Lviv had a loud night. The enemy conducted a combined attack with Shahed drones and missiles," Kozytskyi said.
A wave of missile and drones caused fires at a large electronics plant in the city of Mukachevo, as air alerts sounded in the Rivne region, around 304 kilometres west of the capital, Kyiv.
Additional explosions were heard in the north-western city of Lutsk.
Russia has continued its barrage of strikes against Ukraine despite high-level peace talks focused on finding an end to the war earlier in the week.
US President Donald Trump sparked cautious optimism among European leaders by suggesting the US would take part in providing security guarantees in the event of a peace settlement, although he later ruled out putting boots on the ground.
Assurances against a future invasion are a key element for Kyiv to agree to a peace deal.
Ukraine has asked for Western-backed military assurances to prevent Russia from attacking the country again.

Modi and Macron vow closer ties as Trump presses India on Russian oil
India and France agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership and economic exchanges in a phone call between the two countries' leaders on Thursday, August 21, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron also coordinated their positions on the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza. India is staring down an ultimatum from Donald Trump to stop buying oil from Russia or face a doubling of tariffs on its exports to the United States to 50 percent as part of the US president's global trade blitz. "Had a very good conversation with my friend President Macron," Modi said in a post on social media, adding that they had agreed to strengthen their "strategic partnership". A government statement said Modi and Macron also discussed bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, defense and energy. It said Macron also shared his assessment of a summit Trump held with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday, days after the US leader met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Israel's war with Gaza was also discussed, the statement said. Modi said he and Macron had exchanged views on "efforts for the peaceful resolution" of those conflicts. Oil purchases from Russia have saved India billions of dollars but have also been a key source of revenue for Moscow to fund its military offensive in Ukraine. The telephone call between Modi and Macron came as Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and then Putin in Moscow. Jaishankar said after meeting Lavrov that they had "reaffirmed our shared ambition to expand bilateral trade" by increasing India's exports to Russia but made no direct reference to India's purchases of Russian oil.

Major Russian aerial attack on Ukraine kills one and injures 15
Russia launched one of its biggest aerial attacks of the year on Ukraine, firing 574 drones and 40 ballistic and cruise missiles overnight into Thursday, the Ukrainian Air Force said, while a recent diplomatic push to stop the three-year war is trying to gain momentum. The attack mostly targeted western regions of the country, the air force said, where much of the military aid provided by Ukraine's Western allies is believed to be delivered and stored. The strikes killed at least one person and injured 15 others, according to officials. It was Russia's third largest aerial attack this year in terms of the number of drones fired and the eighth-largest in terms of missiles, according to official figures. Most such Russian attacks have hit civilian areas. The strikes occurred during a renewed US-led effort to reach a peace settlement following Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion of its neighbour. US President Donald Trump discussed the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week and at the start of this week hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House. Ukraine and European leaders have accused Putin of stalling in ongoing peace efforts, including Ukraine's proposal of a ceasefire and Zelenskyy's offer to sit down with the Russian leader. The Kremlin has reacted coolly to those possibilities. Zelenskyy condemned the overnight attack, saying it was carried out "as if nothing were changing at all." Moscow has shown no signs of pursuing meaningful negotiations to end the war, Zelenskyy said. He urged the international community to respond with stronger pressure on Moscow, including tougher sanctions and tariffs. Ukraine, meanwhile, has kept up its attacks with domestically produced long-range drones on infrastructure inside Russia that supports Moscow's war effort. Among other targets, it has hit oil refineries and Russian wholesale gasoline prices have reached record highs in recent days. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia struck a "major American electronics manufacturer" in western Ukraine. He provided no further details but Zelenskyy said the company produces domestic appliances. Western parts of Ukraine are far from the battlefield's front line in the east and south of the country, where a grinding war of attrition has killed tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides. In comments Wednesday that were embargoed until Thursday, Zelenskyy said Ukraine will hold intensive meetings to understand what kind of security guarantees its allies are willing to provide. The details are being hammered out by national security advisers and military officials. The plans will become clearer within 10 days, Zelenskyy said. He then expects to be ready to hold direct talks with Putin for the first time since the war started. The talks could also be conducted in a trilateral format alongside Trump, Zelenskyy said. A venue for the meeting is being discussed and Switzerland, Austria and Turkey are possibilities, Zelenskyy added. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that working on security arrangements in Ukraine without Moscow's involvement was not feasible, according to state news agency RIA Novosti. Zelenskyy said that in his Oval Office meeting with Trump on Monday he sought to convince the American president that the battlefield situation was not as bad for Ukraine as Putin portrayed. Zelenskyy pointed to errors in the US map of the front line that he said showed Russia holding more territory than it actually does.
