Parents are charged after their son, 7, is struck dead in a car accident

The grieving parents of a 7-year-old child who died hours after being hit by a car were charged with involuntary manslaughter after allowing him and his brother, 10, to walk home unaccompanied by an adult from a nearby grocery store. Jessica Ivey and Samuele Jenkins were charged two days after their son Legend died from injuries caused by being struck by a Jeep on May 27 in Gastonia, a rural town in North Carolina. The 76-year-old driver will not face any charges. The Food Lion store is two blocks away from their home. The parents said the children were with their mother when they asked to meet their father at the store, and she allowed them to leave, according to the Gaston Gazette. The brothers had to cross the busy, four-lane road, but attempted to go between crosswalks. Witnesses told WSOC-TV Gastonia that Legend stepped into traffic as his older brother attempted to hold him back. Jenkins said he was on the phone with his elder son when the younger child was hit. 'I heard my oldest son yell, 'Legend, no!' so I hung up and ran. I just ran to find them,' he told the local television station. Two days later, Gastonia police arrested the parents, who are being held on $1.5 million bond. 'In such cases, adults must be held accountable for their responsibilities to ensure a safe environment for their children,' police said in a statement. Gastonia police declined to comment to NBC News, but said in a statement that 'there is no evidence of speeding or wrongdoing on the part of the driver, therefore no charges have been filed. The driver continues to be cooperative and the incident remains under active investigation by the Gastonia Police Department's Traffic Division.' The parents' public defenders did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. Ivey, the mother, said before her arrest to WSOC that it was the first time she let the children walk alone. 'It was just devastating, I'm still in shock, I'm in shock,' she said. 'It's hard, I haven't stopped crying; my husband hasn't stopped crying. Honestly, I want justice for my baby.' Summer Williams was in her car and witnessed the event. She told WSOC that Legend, apparently unaware of oncoming traffic, jumped into the street to the surprise of his brother, who tried to stop him. Williams said she comforted the child until paramedics arrived. 'Even at night, I still see his face,' she said. 'Just letting him know that somebody was there and he wasn't alone. 'Stay with us, sweetheart. You're going to be all right. Stay with us,'' Williams said she told the child. This article was originally published on

Man convicted in 2018 stabbing death of ex-girlfriend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The man charged with the 2018 murder of a Rochester woman was convicted on Wednesday on murder charges. Nearly seven years after the death of his ex-girlfriend, Tracy Henton-Williams, Roger Lee Wiggins was found guilty by a Monroe County jury of second-degree murder. On June 11, 2018, officials reported to a scene on Buffalo Road for calls of a woman who had been stabbed and tumbled from a moving vehicle. The victim, identified as Henton-Williams, was helped by multiple passersby but succumbed to her injuries after being transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by ambulance. The investigation found that she was in the passenger seat of the vehicle driven by Wiggins when the stabbing occurred. While he was driving, Wiggins stabbed her in the neck and chest before she fell out of the moving vehicle and onto the side of the road as he drove away from the scene. On June 12, 2018, Wiggins was arrested at the Canadian border after the North Tonawanda Police Department alerted Gates Police that employees at the Buffalo Recycling Facility had found items belonging to Henton-Williams, as well as two knives and a shirt containing the DNA of both Wiggins and Henton-Williams. Surveillance video showed Wiggins discarding the items. Teen pleads guilty to stolen car crash that killed 14-year-old First Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles commented on the guilty verdict and the efforts of all involved in the case. 'Tracy was a mother, a daughter, a sister, and an educator,' Duckles said, 'I must thank the Gates Police Department, the Canadian Border Patrol services, and the various agencies who assisted in this investigation, but I want to especially thank the Good Samaritans who assisted Tracy in her final moments and continued to cooperate with police.' 'This was a clear case of domestic violence and tragic loss,' Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said of the murder, 'After what was a rollercoaster of emotions, I hope that the family of Tracy Henton-Williams feel justice in today's verdict.' Wiggins is scheduled to be sentenced on July 21. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Fla. man violently hit by SUV, shot at by driver in wild road rage incident: cops

A shooting and crash in Florida that resulted in three people being charged was a result of road rage, police say. Around 3:20 p.m. on Monday, the driver of a Jeep Compass was waiting to turn left out of a parking lot when the driver of a Buick sedan turned left into the lot, in front of the Jeep driver. The Buick driver, Anthony Williams, parked and the Jeep driver, Raesean Poole, backed up to confront Williams about not using a turn signal, Bradenton police said on Facebook. Williams and a teenage passenger exited the Buick before Poole claims that Williams showed him a gun during the confrontation. Video captured at the scene shows Poole trying to drive away several times, but stops and continues arguing with Williams. During what police call the 'final confrontation,' Poole accelerated the Jeep toward Williams, hitting a stop sign, tree and striking Williams in the leg. The teenaged Buick passenger, 16-year-old Manuel Villatoro, then 'retrieved a gun and fired into Poole's Jeep,' police said. The three involved were detained by police shortly afterward. The Jeep driver, 33-year-old Poole, has been charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle. Raesean Poole, 33, and Manuel Villatoro, 16, were two of three individuals charged in a road rage incident in Florida that led to shots being fired after a car crash. Bradenton Police Department Poole, who was driving the Jeep Compass was charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle, as Villatoro was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, while the driver of the Buick, Anthony Williams, 20, hasn't been charged. Bradenton Police Department The Buick driver, 20-year-old Williams, was not seriously injured and charges are pending against him. The teenaged Buick passenger, Villatoro, has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm. Police say the investigation continues.
