AI Beyond Data Centers: 3 Stocks Poised to Dominate AI's Next Big Move

AI Beyond Data Centers: 3 Stocks Poised to Dominate AI's Next Big Move

Globe and Mail8 hours ago

The world is gearing up for artificial intelligence (AI), which researchers believe could unleash between $15 trillion and $23 trillion in annual economic value by 2040. AI could be a game-changer for countless industries and will likely create new market opportunities in the process.
Currently, most of Wall Street has focused on companies like Nvidia, which are selling billions of dollars worth of chips and hardware for AI data centers.
Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »
Eventually, though, AI will move beyond its hyperfocus on data centers into the real world, and that presents a huge market opportunity that investors are only just beginning to position their portfolios for.
Three Motley Fool analysts put their heads together. They arrived at Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), The Trade Desk (NASDAQ: TTD), and Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) as technology leaders in excellent position to capitalize on AI tailwinds that could drive growth for years to come. Here is what you need to know.
Apple's ecosystem is a leg up on the competition in personal devices
Justin Pope (Apple): Smartphones have become handheld computers, the central technology hub for people living their daily lives. It makes Apple a clear favorite as AI software becomes increasingly integrated into society.
The company's iOS mobile operating system spans phones, accessories, watches, tablets, and computers that all work seamlessly together, creating a formidable competitive moat.
In other words, the more iOS devices you use, the more of a pain it is to abandon the system for something else. Today, that iOS user base spans 2.35 billion devices. It's the perfect distribution network for AI software. But it has become evident that the company's first attempt at AI, Apple Intelligence, hasn't gone off with a bang.
Fortunately for Apple, its system's stickiness gives the iPhone maker room for error that most brands don't have. There's a solid chance that the company will eventually work out these kinks and deploy its consumer-facing AI technology across billions of devices, whether smartphones or other device using its far-reaching iOS platform. Most companies will build AI and then try to find customers -- Apple already has customers, it just needs to develop and ship good software.
The company is a behemoth today, and probably won't grow fast enough to replicate its past investment returns. Still, there may be no better-positioned consumer-facing business ready to capitalize on AI's potential than Apple, and that's an advantage the company should retain for as long as people stay within its iOS system.
The stock has become a slower and steadier grower with a rising dividend, making it an ideal investment to stash in a long-term portfolio and take advantage of dividend reinvesting, letting Apple compound for as long as people continue to upgrade their devices.
AI-driven insights could be game-changing for this stock
Will Healy (The Trade Desk): The Trade Desk is in a sweet spot when it comes to capitalizing on AI. It operates a buy-side platform that companies and ad agencies use to purchase ad space ideally suited for targeting demographics, thereby maximizing returns on ad spending.
It is currently migrating clients from its old platform, Solimar, to its AI-driven Kokai platform, which offers users enhanced AI to improve ad bidding, targeting, and budgeting for ad buys. Also, its measuring and forecasting functions offer improved insights and predictive capabilities.
Investors may not be aware of how much impact such improvements could have for the global digital ad market and, by extension, its investors. Research and Markets predicts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14% between 2022 and 2030 for the digital advertising industry. Hence, this market will grow to around $1.5 trillion by 2030 if Research and Markets' forecast comes to pass.
In the first quarter of 2025, The Trade Desk reported $616 million in revenue, a 25% increase from year-ago levels. Still, since that amounts to revenue of just under $2.6 billion over the trailing 12 months, the company claims well under 1% of the addressable market.
It's consistently profitable. In the first quarter, it earned nearly $51 million in net income, a 60% yearly increase.
And investors may recall the massive sell-off after the company failed to meet its own revenue projection in the fourth quarter. The silver lining is that the recent declines have taken its forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) to 40.
That multiple does not make this stock cheap, though it is down from a forward P/E of more than 80 in December. This means investors can capitalize on this potentially lucrative opportunity without paying an uncomfortably high premium, making The Trade Desk particularly attractive to AI-focused investors.
AI is coming to financial services
Jake Lerch (Robinhood Markets): As AI software begins to truly take off, one area to watch is financial services. Specifically, investment advisory and brokerage services. The company I'm keeping a close eye on is Robinhood Markets.
Robinhood is one of the fastest-growing brokerages, with revenue increases of 50% as of its most recent quarter (ending on March 31). And with shares up more than 200% over the last 12 months, it's clear that investors are excited about the company's performance.
However, Robinhood's AI initiatives are an under-the-radar asset that could grow in importance in the coming years. For example, last July, it acquired Pluto, an AI investment research company.
Pluto's data analytics capabilities and algorithms can provide Robinhood customers with insights into market and financial data as well as key trends. It can also provide real-time reviews of a customer's investment portfolio, highlighting risks and suggesting strategies based on the person's risk tolerance, age, investment style, and goals.
Some of these tools will likely be incorporated into Robinhood's Cortex, an AI investment tool that the company plans to roll out later this year. Cortex will form an integral part of Robinhood's strategy of bringing a private wealth management experience to the everyday investor.
By providing personalized investment analysis and portfolio management to each customer, the company hopes to grow its assets under management (AUM), which already stand at more than $200 billion. And as its AUM grows, so should the company's revenue, net income, and free cash flow.
In summary, AI will continue to become more central to all aspects of the economy. In retail investing, customers will come to expect personalized analysis and advice, and Robinhood is positioning itself to be a leader within that space.

Canadians can apply for Canada Disability Benefit starting in June

Bank of Canada notes are displayed at the Bank of Canada museum in Ottawa on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Sean Kilpatrick) Eligible Canadians can begin applying for the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) as of June 20. The new benefit, part of the federal government's Disability Inclusion Action Plan, aims to provide financial support to Canadians living with disabilities. Who is eligible? The benefit is available to persons with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64 who meet several requirements. Some of these requirements include qualifying for the disability tax credit (DTC), filing a 2024 income tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency, or having a spouse or common-law partner who has also filed their 2024 income tax return, if applicable. The federal government will also send letters in June to eligible Canadians to apply. The letters will include a unique application code and instructions on how to apply. According to the program's website, Canadians who do not receive a letter but believe they are eligible can still apply. To do so, they must provide a mailing address and their net income (line 23600) from their 2024 notice of assessment. How to apply Eligible Canadians can apply starting June 20 online, by phone or in person at a Service Canada office. Applicants will need a social insurance number (SIN) and direct deposit information. According to the program's website, Service Canada uses direct deposit because it is more efficient and reliable. A number of community-based organizations across Canada will also provide support throughout the CDB application process, including assistance with applying for the DTC. Canadians whose applications are received and approved by June 30 can expect first payment in July. How much is the benefit? The benefit is calculated based on various factors, including adjusted family net income. The maximum amount is $2,400 annually ($200 per month), from July 2025 to June 2026. The benefit will be adjusted for inflation each year to reflect changes in the cost of living, but the benefit will not decrease if the cost of living goes down. Eligible Canadians may also receive retroactive payments for up to 24 months prior to the date their application is received—but not for any months before July 2025.

Equinox Gold Stock Trading Cheaper Than Industry: Should You Buy Now?

Equinox Gold Corp. 's EQX stock looks attractive from a valuation perspective. EQX is currently trading at a forward price/earnings of 6.54X, a roughly 51.2% discount to the Zacks Mining – Gold industry's average of 13.4X. EQX is trading at a discount to its peers, B2Gold Corp. BTG, Eldorado Gold Corporation EGO and IAMGOLD Corporation IAG. Equinox Gold, B2Gold, Eldorado Gold and IAMGOLD have a Value Score of A, each. EQX's P/E F12M Vs. Industry, BTG, EGO and IAG Technical indicators show that EQX stock broke out above its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) on May 30, 2025. It is also currently trading above the 200-day SMA. The 50-day SMA continues to read higher than the 200-day SMA following a golden crossover on Jan. 29, 2025, indicating a bullish trend. EQX Trades Above 50-Day SMA Equinox Gold's cheap valuation should lure investors seeking value. But is the time right to buy EQX's shares based on its attractive valuation? Let's delve deeper. Expansion Actions, Calibre Merger Underpin EQX's Growth Equinox Gold has rapidly evolved into a diversified, growth-focused gold producer. With operating mines spanning Canada, the United States and Brazil, it is targeting over one million ounces of annual production through an ambitious pipeline of expansions. It currently has five producing mines and three expansion and development projects that are expected to add roughly 300,000 ounces of annual production over the next few years. Greenstone, which achieved commercial production last November, is ramping up toward the full production target rate of 196,000 tons per day (tpd), which is expected in the second half of 2025. Greenstone is expected to produce around 390,000 ounces of gold annually at full production. Also, an underground expansion at the Aurizona mine in Brazil will extend the mine life to 11 years and expand gold production with an average annual gold production of 137,000 ounces. The Phase 2 project at Castle Mountain in California is expected to increase production to an average of 218,000 ounces annually over a 14-year Phase 2 mine life, with further potential for expansion from exploration. Aligning with its growth strategy, Equinox Gold, in February 2025, agreed to acquire all outstanding common shares of Calibre Mining Corp. Through this transaction, Equinox Gold will enhance its asset base with operating mines in Nicaragua and the United States, as well as earlier-stage assets in the United States. Also, the acquisition includes the Valentine Gold Mine in Newfoundland, Canada, which is expected to commence gold production in the third quarter of 2025. The deal received approval from both EQX shareholders and Calibre securityholders on May 1, 2025, and is expected to close around the end of June 2025. The combination of Greenstone and Valentine Gold will create a Canadian gold mining powerhouse with more than 1.2 million ounces of annual production, and benefit from low-cost production growth, increased cash flow, lower operating costs and a stronger balance sheet. The combined entity, with around 23 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, will be well-placed to capitalize on the favorable gold price environment while deleveraging the balance sheet using strong cash flow generation. Higher Gold Prices to Drive EQX's Profitability Gold prices have rallied roughly 27% this year, largely attributable to aggressive trade policies, including sweeping new import tariffs announced by President Donald Trump that have intensified global trade tensions and heightened investor anxiety. Also, central banks worldwide have been accumulating gold reserves, led by risks arising from Trump's policies. Prices of the yellow metal catapulted to a record high of $3,500 per ounce on April 22 as the U.S. dollar tumbled amid President Trump's criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and call for an immediate reduction in interest rates. Increased purchases by central banks, hopes of interest rate cuts, and geopolitical tensions are factors expected to help the yellow metal sustain the rally. While gold prices have fallen from their April 2025 highs, they remain favorable. The yellow metal is gaining from safe-haven demand triggered by trade and geopolitical uncertainties, and is currently hovering above the $3,300 per ounce level. Higher gold prices are expected to boost EQX's profitability and drive cash flow generation. Equinox Gold's Strong Financial Health Bodes Well EQX has a strong balance sheet and generates substantial cash flows, which allows it to fund its growth projects. The company ended the first quarter with strong liquidity, including roughly $173 million in unrestricted cash and $65 million in an undrawn credit facility. It also generated cash flow from operations (before changes in non-cash working capital) of $73.3 million in the quarter. The company expects to pursue deleveraging in the second half of 2025, utilizing strong cash flow generation partly through the ramp-up of Greenstone. Higher Costs May Strain EQX's Margins EQX's first-quarter results reveal a sharp uptick in all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) — a key indicator of cost efficiency in mining. AISC climbed to $2,065 per ounce, up roughly 6% from $1,950 per ounce in the year-ago quarter. Excluding the results from the Los Filos mine in Mexico, which has been indefinitely suspended after the expiry of its land access agreement, AISC still climbed 9% to $1,979 per ounce, underscoring operational cost inflation that threatens margins. This upside reflects higher unit costs in Brazil, and higher costs and unplanned maintenance due to winter challenges at the Greenstone mine in Canada. Higher operational costs, partly due to the suspension of Los Filos mine operations, may continue to act as headwinds in the second quarter. Equinox Gold expects roughly $35 million in mine suspension and care and maintenance charges at Los Filos in the second quarter. Nevertheless, there is a silver lining as the company envisions costs whittling down with rising production in the second half of 2025. Equinox Gold Stock Outperforms S&P 500 Thanks to the rally in gold prices, EQX's shares have racked up a gain of 36% over the past year, underperforming the industry's 51.7% increase but topping the S&P 500's rise of 11.2%. Among its peers, B2Gold, Eldorado Gold and IAMGOLD have rallied 39.1%, 43.2% and 105.9%, respectively, over the same period. EQX's One-year Price Performance What EQX's Earnings Estimates Indicate Earnings estimates for EQX have been revised downward over the past 30 days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 and 2026 has been revised lower over the same time frame. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for EQX's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies a year-over-year rise of 230% and 106%, respectively. (Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar.) Final Thoughts: Hold Onto EQX Stock With a strong expansion roadmap and an accretive merger on deck, EQX is positioning itself as a high-growth gold player. Higher gold prices and the ramp-up of Greenstone are expected to boost its profitability and drive cash flow generation. Despite EQX's attractive valuation, its high costs warrant caution. Cost pressures may linger into the second quarter, but the second half of 2025 promises improved unit costs and operational discipline. Therefore, holding onto this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock will be prudent for investors to capture the upside from production expansion and merger synergies. These 3 Stocks Are Buying Back Billions in Shares

As market volatility and sector rotations persist in 2025, companies sitting on strong balance sheets are leaning into one of the most shareholder-friendly strategies available: stock buybacks. A wave of fresh repurchase authorizations has hit the tape in recent weeks, signaling confidence from management teams about the future of their businesses and the current undervaluation of their stocks. These announcements are especially notable in the current environment, where selective value and capital return are once again top priorities for investors. Multiple large-cap stocks just announced significant buyback programs. Among them is one of the hottest consumer discretionary names over the past few years. It now has buyback capacity equal to nearly 16% of its market cap, and its shares are down massively from highs. This suggests the company is highly confident in the ability of its shares to perform well going forward. LII: Strong Mid-Term Industrials Performer Boosting Buybacks and Dividends [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSE:LII] First up is Lennox International (NYSE: LII), an approximately $20 billion player in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration space. On May 22, the company announced an increase to its buyback capacity of $1 billion, bringing its total capacity to just under $1.3 billion. As of the May 30 close, this is equal to about 6.4% of the company's market capitalization. In addition, the company announced a very notable 13% increase to its quarterly dividend. The next $1.30 per share dividend will be payable on July 15 to shareholders of record on June 30. This gives the stock an indicated dividend yield of 0.9%. Despite achieving relatively moderate sales growth over the last couple of years, Lennox has been a standout performer. Since the end of 2022, the stock has provided a total return of nearly 142% as of the May 30 close. The company's operating margin expanded significantly from around 14% in 2022 to nearly 19.5% in 2024. Its full-year adjusted earnings per share (EPS) grew by 54% over this period, supporting the rise in shares. DECK: Ups Repurchase Capacity After Quarter of Record Buybacks [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSE:DECK] Next up is one of the most talked-about consumer discretionary stocks over the past several years, Deckers Outdoor (NYSE: DECK). From the beginning of 2022 to Jan. 30, 2025, the stock gained approximately 265%. However, since then, the trajectory of the Hoka shoemaker's stock has pointed straight down. From that all-time high in January, the stock is down approximately 53% as of the May 30 close. The company's recent share repurchase authorization announcement indicates that it may be looking to take advantage of this huge fall from grace. On May 22, along with its fiscal Q4 2025 results, Deckers announced it had increased its buyback authorization to approximately $2.5 billion. This equates to an absolutely massive 15.8% of the company's market capitalization as of the May 30 close. This gives the company a huge ability to decrease its outstanding share count and provide a large tailwind to its EPS. The company already stepped up its buybacks in a big way in calendar Q1 as the huge drop in shares began to manifest. The company spent $266 million on repurchases, by far the highest amount in a single quarter in its history. In Q4, when shares were nearing their peak, the company spent just $50 million on buybacks. This buyback authorization suggests the firm may be looking to step up repurchases even further. Decker's cash balance of just under $1.9 billion, while only having $277 million in debt, gives it a very strong ability to do so. Adding to this ability is the fact that the company is relatively frugal when it comes to capital expenditures, spending an average of just $22 million over the last four quarters. TS: Robust Balance Sheet, 5% Dividend, Substantial Buyback Capacity [content-module:CompanyOverview|NYSE:TS] Last up is Tenaris (NYSE: TS). The large-cap steel pipe supplier for oil and gas companies recently approved a substantial new share repurchase program, valued at $1.2 billion. As of the May 30 close, this number is equal to approximately 6.7% of the company's market capitalization. Tenaris also has a very strong dividend yield of just under 5%. Tenaris first started buying back shares at the beginning of 2024. The company has been making notable use of buybacks since, spending an average of $315 million on repurchases per quarter. This buyback pace suggests it could use its full capacity over the next 12 months. Tenaris remains in a very strong position to continue this buyback pace if it chooses. It ended last quarter with a net cash balance of $4 billion and generated free cash flow of over $2.1 billion in the last 12 months. Thus, if operating results remain similar going forward, the company could execute its full buyback capacity without reducing its cash reserves. Overall, these three firms are reiterating their commitment to returning capital to shareholders through their new buyback authorization. Deckers stands out due to the dramatic fall in its share price and its gigantic buyback authorization. Where Should You Invest $1,000 Right Now?
