Egyptian thriller ‘The Settlement' nabs award at MiWorld Young Film Festival

The social thriller is Mohamed Rashad's first narrative feature, following his 2016 documentary 'Little Eagles'.
Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Rashad's workplace thriller, The Settlement, has won the Audience Award at the MiWorld Young Film Festival, an event dedicated to showcasing cinema from Africa, Asia and Latin America in schools to foster intercultural dialogue and global awareness through film.
Inspired by true events, The Settlement tells the story of two brothers—23-year-old Hossam and his 12-year-old sibling Maro—who, after their father's fatal workplace accident, are offered jobs at the local factory in lieu of their family seeking legal recourse. As they integrate into their new environment, unsettling questions arise about the true nature of their father's death.
Rashad, a native of Alexandria whose father worked in textile factories for over four decades, was moved by a real-life account of a law graduate whose family was pressured into waiving their legal rights following a similar tragedy. Seeing a powerful opportunity to explore workplace safety violations and exploitative labour practices, Rashad transformed this story into a tense and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
The Settlement features Adham Shukr, Ziad Islam, Hajar Omar, Mohamed Abdel Hady and Emad Ghoneim. The film's visuals are crafted by cinematographer Mahmoud Lotfi, while editor Heba Othman—known for her work on the acclaimed Sudanese film Goodbye Julia—brings the story to life through editing.
Produced through an international collaboration spanning Egypt, France, Germany, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, The Settlement is led by producer Hala Lotfy of Hassala Films (Cairo) alongside co-producers Etienne de Ricaud of Caractères Productions (Paris), Kesmat Elsayed of Seera Films GmbH (Berlin) and ART (Jeddah). The film's worldwide sales are managed by MAD World, with MAD Distribution handling its release in the Arab world.
During its development, The Settlement garnered support from numerous international funding bodies, including the Berlinale World Cinema Fund, IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund Script and Development Initiative, Hubert Bals Plus Co-Production Minority Support, Doha Film Institute, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Red Sea Development Fund, Fonds Image De La Francophonie, and El Gouna Film Festival's CineGouna Platform.

Hunna launches 2025 Mentorship Programme for female Saudi musicians

From July to November, monthly workshops will feature leading regional and international women sharing insights on production, live performance, artist strategy and global positioning. Hunna, a women-led initiative dedicated to championing female talent across the MENA music scene, has launched its 2025 Mentorship Programme and workshop series in Saudi Arabia. The initiative will connect emerging female artists with established industry mentors while hosting workshops and community events across the region in the lead-up to XP Music Futures in Riyadh from December 4 to 6, according to a report by Al Arabiya English. Now in its third edition, the flagship programme builds on Hunna's mission to professionalise, amplify and connect women in music. The network, which has more than 120 active members from Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and beyond, aims to equip women creatives with the resources, connections, and visibility needed to succeed in an evolving global music industry. Six mentees from the MENA region and its diaspora were selected through a rigorous, anonymised process led by the Hunna Committee, a diverse panel of industry professionals and past mentees. The 2025 mentor-mentee pairings include Tunisian music entrepreneur Chaima Soudani with Celine Hitti, Head of Artist Services MENA at Believe; electronic-pop artist Nadine Lingawi ('Fulana') with Emmy-nominated composer and BBC Radio 3 presenter Hannah Peel; Egyptian multi-instrumentalist Martina Ashraf with Montréal-based experimental electronic artist Liliane Chlela; Saudi composer and pianist Nora Aljebrin with Tarabband lead vocalist Nadin Al Khalidi; DJ and producer Lena Chercaoui with Saudi DJ pioneer Cosmicat; and Palestinian-Jordanian vocalist Lina Sleibi with singer-songwriter and visual creative Lina Makoul. Named after the Arabic plural for 'she,' Hunna continues to work at the intersection of cultural advocacy, professional development and community care, grounded in the values of professionalisation, amplification and collaboration. The 2025 programme begins with the 'Introduction to Music Production Workshop' on August 20 at Beast House in Riyadh, hosted by Laughta and Cosmicat. A virtual masterclass titled 'Plan A Release,' led by Lina ElSahli of MDLBeast Records, will follow on August 27, offering practical guidance on preparing and executing a professional music release. From July to November, monthly workshops will bring in leading regional and international women to cover topics including production, live performance, artist strategy and global positioning. These sessions are open to all Hunna community members, underscoring the initiative's commitment to accessibility and shared growth. The programme will culminate with the Hunna Gathering at XP Music Futures in Riyadh from December 4 to 6, described as the 'emotional heart' of the initiative, a space for mentors, mentees, alumni and the broader community to connect, reflect and celebrate. XP Music Futures, now in its fourth year, is organised by MDLBeast and will be held at Riyadh's JAX District. The three-day event will feature a diverse lineup of global and regional speakers, addressing topics such as maintaining grassroots culture, the role of AI in the creative economy and using music for climate action. The conference blends panels, workshops, live performances, and immersive experiences, reinforcing its position as a leading platform for the region's music industry.

ADCB, Visa ‘level up' Egyptian generosity in funny Masri Card ad

ADCB, a leading banking institution in the UAE, and Visa have launched a new, fresh and engaging campaign to create awareness about the new 'Masri Card' credit card among Egyptian audiences. Targeting individuals who use credit cards on a daily basis for small, everyday payments – specifically, people interested in cashback benefits – the campaign was released across digital platforms, social media and billboards. The hero video of the ADCB Visa campaign was brought to life by creative lead and director Sherif Mounir, who directed the spot and developed the idea directly with the client. Everyone Films was the production house on record for the campaign, while The Barber House handled the post-production elements. The campaign, which runs primarily in Egypt, will run over the course of one to two months. The core idea of the campaign was to lean into the deeply cultural Egyptian spirit of helpfulness and generosity, which is deemed an important part of daily Egyptian life. However, given inflation and the rising cost of living, the hero film hilariously shows how this could be gradually fading, lending a level of honesty and authenticity to the campaign. By associating this card with enhancing generosity, the brand aimed to create an emotional connection with its target audience and position the card as something special. To combine the idea of a card that offers unlimited cashback with the idea of Egyptian generosity, the director and the production house showcased how the card is used to pay bills in fast food outlets and to cover everyday expenses, which is the card's main target use. The concept shows the story from the perspective of restaurant and shop staff, who have witnessed an exaggerated wave of generosity since the card's launch. Shot in a docu-drama format, the ad humorously captures how Egyptian generosity has 'levelled up' after the Masri Card appeared. It explores how generosity has changed – now often motivated by the cashback reward – which became the comedic twist at the heart of the film.
